Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 8, 1907.
Application iled November 17, 1906. Serial No. 343,856.
To LZ/ whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, HERMAN B.WELoH, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of West Hoboken, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Fastening for Handles of Bags, Satchels, Purses, &c., of which, the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to fastenings for the handles of bags, satchels, or purses, and especially to that class of fastenings which involves the use of a bearing having a swivel connection for attaching a handle.
Heretofore handles of the kind referred to have been attached by inserting the ends thereof in sockets, the ends being held in the sockets each by a transverse pin. That fas tening is defective, as the pins pull their way out through the handle ends.
The object of the invention is to produce a simple fastening by means of which the handle of the bag may be quickly attached and secured.
The invention consists in the construction and combination "of parts, to be more fully described hereinafter, and particularly set forth in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the iigures.
Figure 1 is a side elevation showing a portion of theframe and body of a bag having a handle attached according to my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section of one of the fastenings for the handle. This view is taken on the line 2 2 of Fig. 3; but a portion of the handle is shown in elevation. Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse section taken on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a cross-section on the line 4 4 of Fig. 2 and illustrating the manner in which the end of the handle is secured at the bearing; and Fig. 5 is a perspective of a socket by means of which the handle end is held, the same constituting a feature of the invention.
Referring more particularly to the parts, 1 represents the upper portion of the body of a bag, satchel, or purse, the same being provided with the usual metal frame 2 at its upper edge. This frame is provided at suitable points with bearings 3, said bearings comprising bases 4, which are adapted to attach to the frame 2 in any suitable manner. In these bases eyes 5 are attached, the said eyes consisting of split rings having Shanks 6, which are forced downwardly through openings 7, formed in the frame and clenched on the under side thereof, as indicated most clearly in Fig. 2. Before attaching the eyes 5 in the bases 4 they are secured to swivels 8, the said swivel having reduced necks 9, at which the eyes 5 are applied, as indicated most clearly in Fig. 2. The outer ends of the swivels 8 are enlarged to form collars 1 0, which are knurled, as indicated, so as to give the fastening an ornamental appearance.
Each swivel is formedl with a cylindrical bore 11, in which there is received a socket 12. This socket is formed at its outer extremity into a head 13, which seats against the outer face of the collar 10 when the socket is forced home in a manner which will appear more fully hereinafter.
The inner portion of the body of theswivel 8 is of rounded form, as shown, and at its inner extremity an inwardly-projecting lip 14 is formed around the bore 11. The form of this lip is such that it presents a rounded shoulder on its inner side.
The form of the socket 12 is very clearly shown in Fig. 5. It has a cylindrical body, the inner extremity whereof is formed with a chamber 15 or socket proper, and the wall of this chamber at the inner end of the socket is formed 'into a pluralityV of sharp projecting teeth 16, as indicated most clearly in Fig. 5. The handle -17 has a body which is stiffened so as to maintain the form illustrated in Fig. 1, the said body presenting downwardly-converging arms 18, on which the leather covering of the handle extends in the form of a roll or loose end 19. When the handle is to be applied to the bag-body, these ends 19 are forced into the form of rolls or rounded ends, and they are then forced longitudinally into the inner ends of the swivels 8. The sockets 12 are then inserted in the outer ends of the swivels and are driven inwardly. It should be understood that when the sockets are forced inwardly in this manner the rolls or ends 19 pass into the interior of the sockets, and as the sockets are advanced the teeth 16 come into contact with the lip 14 and are crimped inwardly, so that they penetrate the interior of the ends, as illustrated in Fig. 2. In this Way the sockets are made to take a IOO firm grasp of the ends ofthe handle. The sockets are` driven inwardly until the heads l 3 thereof seat against the ends of the swivels. In this way the handles are very securelyheld in position, but may be swung from side to side, as will be readily understood, by reason of the swivel 8, which is mounted in the bearing. The handle ends cannot be withdrawn from the ends of the sockets byreason of the grasp exerted by the teeth 16, and the sockets evidently cannot be withdrawn-from the swivels, so that a very secure fastening is produced. It will also be evident that the fastening of the handles in the bearings may be very quickly effected.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure' by Letters Patent- 1. A handle-fastening comprising a socket having a chamber formed in the extremity thereof adapted to receive the handle end, and a member in which said socket is received and affording means for crimping said socket inwardly to grasp the handle.
2. A handle-fastening comprising a swivel having a bore therein with a lip at the extremity thereof, a socket received in said bore and havin `a chamber in the extremity thereof adapte to receive the handle end, said lip affording means for crimping the Wall of said chamber inwardly to engage the handle end when said socket is forced home.
3. A handle-fastening comprising a swivelv l having a bore with a lip at the extremity thereof, a socket having a chamber formed in the extremity thereof and adapted to be inserted in said bore at the end thereof opposite said lip, said socket having teeth formed in the wall of said chamber and adaptedto engage said lip whereby said lip may crimp said teeth inwardly to engage the handle end introduced into said chamber.
4. A bag having a handle presenting'projecting ends, swivels, bearings retaining said swivels, said swivels having each a bore receiving said ends respectively, said bores having lips formed at the inner extremities thereof at which said ends are introduced, and
sockets adapted to be forced into the ends of said bores remote from said lips, said sockets having chambers formed in the inner extremities thereof adapted to receive said ends, the inner extremities of said ysockets having teeth adapted to engage said lips respectively to be crimped inwardly to engage said handle ends.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
