JOSEPH H. FULTON,
OF WEST LEBANON, PENNSYLVANDL LAMP-BURNER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 8, 1907.
Application filed April 4, 1906. Serial No. 309,789.
To all 111710111, it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH H. FULTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at West Lebanon, (R. F. D. No. 1, Saltsburg, Pennsylvania,) in the county of Indiana and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Lamp-Burners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to lamp-burners of the type embodying a pair of oppositely-projecting wick-operating shafts, and has for its objects to produce a comparatively simple, inexpensive device of this character wherein the shafts are effectually connected for operation one from the other, one in which relative longitudinal movement of the shafts is positively prevented, and one wherein the shafts will have a firm but freerotary bearing in the burner-base, thus to insure their like operation in moving the wick.
With these and other objects in view the invention comprises the novel features of construction and combination of parts more fully hereinafter described.
In the accompanying a side elevation of a lamp-burner embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a reverse plan view of the same.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a burner provid ed with chimney-engaging arms 2 and having a base 3, including a depending threaded neck 4, designed for engagement with the lamp and through which and the burner there is extended a wick-tube 5 of appropriate form, these parts, except as hereinafter explained, being all of the usual or any preferred construction and material and adapted to perform their ordinary functions.
Extended in reverse directions through the base portion 4 and having bearing for rotation therein is a pair of shafts 6 and 7, disposed, respectively, on opposite sides of the tube 5 and equipped at their outer ends with milled heads 8. These shafts, of which the main shaft 6 is provided with wick-engaging members or wheels 9, extended, as usual, through the adjacent wall of the tube 5, are connected for operation one from the other by means of intermeshing toothed pinions 1O 11, fixed, respectively, on the shafts, the inion 10, which is carried at the inner'end of shaft 6, being provided at opposite sides drawings, Figure lie with flanges 12, between which the pinion 11- is entered for engagement with the teeth of pinion 10, the flanges of which arev spaced relatively a distance equaling the thickness of the pinion 11, thus to bear, respectively, on opposite sides thereof and effectually prevent relative longitudinal movement of the shafts.
In practice the shaft 6 may be acutated directly for effecting movement of the wick within the tube 5 or indirectly for such purpose through the medium of auxiliary aft 7, which when rotated will transmit motion to the shaft 6 through the medium of the pinions 10 1-1. It is to be particularly observed that the shafts which extend the base portion 4 have a firm bearing for free rotation in the latter, thus to insure efficient operation of the wick, and, further, that longitudinal movement of the shaft 6 is positively prevented, owing to the wheels 9 extending through the walls of tube 5, while relative movement of the shafts is prevented by the flanges 12 bearing on opposite sides of the pinion 11 as heretofore explained.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- A lamp-burner. having a base portion provided with a depending tubular neck and having a wick-tube, a pair of shafts journaled in said'neck respectively at opposite sides of the tube, said shafts being both extended wholly through the neck in relatively reverse directions and having bearing exclusively in said neck, wick-engaging members fixed on one of the shafts projecting into the tube, said members serving to hold the shaft against longitudinal movement, and a pair of intermeshing toothed pinions fixed respectively on said shafts to connect the same for rotation one from the other, one of said pinions being provided with spaced marginally-projecting flanges designed to bear on opposite sides of the otherpinion for holding t e shafts against relative longitudinal move ment.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOSEPH H. FULTON.
