Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 8, 1907.
- Application filed September 20, 1905 aerial No. PT? 301.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that l, MORTIMER G. Mme RITT, of Rome, in the county of Oneida and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Corner- Fasteners for Bedsteads and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it epperteins to make and use the sen1e,refer' ence being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the characters of reference marked. thereon, which form part of this specification.
The object of my present invention is to provide a. corner-fastener for hedsteeds wherein. provision is made for securing a. strong attachment to the leg or postbyinexpensive means. The material for the posts of ordinary brass hedsteads consists of e tube of iron covered with e thin sheet of brass. It has been found quite diilicult to provide a strong, secure, and satisfactory fastener on a post of such construction.
In the drawings, Figure 1 shows a. perspective view of a post and a corner-fastener device of my improved construction, including portions of the end and side rails oi the bedstead. Fig. .4 shows a perspective view, on an enlarged scale, of the parts removed from the post. Fig. 3 shows in perspective a wedging-key employed in the construction. Fig. 4 shows 8. section of the post employed. Fig. 5 is e cross-sectional view of the post, together with a. plan view of the corner-fastener and itspzirts. Fig. 6 is a side elevation from one point of view, and Fig. 7 is a side elevzu tion from. another point of view of the cornor-fastener.
Referring to the reference letters and figures in a. more particular description, A indicetes the bedstced-post, which is of tubular form and, a sshown in Fig. 5, consists of an inner iron lube pert (.t and an outer brassshcot covering 6. This post is provided at a. suitable elevation from the lower end. with a. slotted opening 5 through one of the wells of the post. The corner-piece B consists of e grooved part 0, adapted to it the side of the post and projecting parts (I end I To the former is adopted to be connected it crossbar, (shown in dotted lines and indicated bv 51,) and la; the other part c is udalpted to he connected the usuei side rail 7i of e bedstead,
the ordinary dovetail corner connection, as
. from the concave fo ce of the p li 13 is a. staple j, which adapted to enter the opening 5 in the post. When so e "cred, the COlIlP1-PlO(i) B is bound and set ed to the post iiy-the wedging-lrey C passing through the we of the staple j and driven. down sufficiently to hind the parts securely together. The shape 5 the key C is preferably such tl at its crown side eugi cs only with the head, he staple, while the base side fits the inner wall of the tubular post.
This construction is easily assembled in building bedsteeds. Of-course it is obvious that the corner-piece B may be easily applied to the post with the staple j entering the opening 5, and with a, suitable long pair of pincers the key C may he entered in the staple from the top of the post, even thou h it may extend to some considerable hei ht above the plane of the corner-fastener. After it entered, it may be driven down by Inca-us of a rod or punch extending down to the key. While this corner is not very reedily taken apart, it is obvious that the hey C can lJOlQlIlOVGd by driving it out by means of a rod inserted from the lower end of the post. In the finished construction of bedsteuds of course the upper and lower ends of the post will. he closed by suitable ornaments.
As the steple j is relatively small as COZYI' pared with the diameter of the post and the key (1 is also relatively small, it possible to place these keys with sui. tble tools from the lower end of the leg only, end this method has to he availed ofwhen on account of con-- strnction access cannot be had into the tube of the leg from the up' 'ier end. In placing the keys entirely from the lower end they will he passed upward by the ple and then moved downwardly into securing position. It is advisable to lnive the larger end of the hey uppermost, as then unv tendencv to drop out by gravity is obviated.
What i claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is--- The combination in it bedstead corner-festeuer oi 1i tubular post having an opening through the side wall and corner-piece fitting the side of the past having a U-shaped staph: entering gbe opening in the post, and a weding-key extending lsngitufi'inally of and engaging with the; inner surface of the postand passing ulwcugbx said Staple with the large? end of the key uppermgst, the supple,
key and opening through the past being 02' relative size to enable the 1 Q to be passea by the staple outside of the loop thereof Whun the is within the openin.
