Description
PATENTED JAN. 8, 1907. E. SPENCER. HYDROCARBON BURNER.
APPLICATION FILED 111:0. 9. 1905.
. To all whom it may concern:
UNITED earns neise sel.
Application filed December 9, 1905. SerialNdiZQl-OOQ Be'it known that I, ELY SPENCER, a citiZe of the United States, residing at Jacksonville,
in the county of Duval and State'of Florida, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in 'Hydrocarbon Burners, of which the following is a specification.
This inventionrelates to improvements in hydrocarbomburnersaof that class in which the fluid is converted intoan inflammable gas which is mixed with more .or less air", and
the improvements which form the subjectmatter of this application are appreciable particularly to the type of such burnerscovcred 'by Letters Patent issued to me, Nos. 807,327, and 807,328. A
The'improvements are es ecially -in the valve connection between t e gas-supply .the latter pipe.
pipe and the, lighter or initialgeneration-pipe and in the construction and arrangement of From extensive experiments with burners of this character I have found that among the'iinportant points to be conserved are economy in: the use of fluid for lighting the burner, the generation of gas freely and fully, and the control of the flow by the o erator or user, and these points I have aime to cover in this invention.
In the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this application, Figure 1 is'a view, partly in side e ovation and artly sectional, of my improved burner. .ig. 2 is a top plan view of s me. Fig. 3 is a vertical (section, on :1. :nl ,ed scale, on line 3 3 of Fi .2. Fig. 4 is ahorizontal section, on an en arged scale, on line 4 of Fig. l.
' Referring to the drawin s in detail, a re resents the burner-base, w 'chis preferab y made of. cast-iron and recessed in its up er surface .to form a panto catch any fluid t at may drop from the lighting-tube e, to be described. The base is formed with an extension, to which is bolted the filtering and awe ilia reservoir 1), which is of the same form as s own in my previous applicationsmentioned. It is composed of a t iin shell or casing which'is filled with asbestos wool and is provided with nipples to receive the inlet and Extending from one side of; the reservoir are two double pipe-elbows b,
outlet pipes.
to the outer ends of which are connected pipes 1) b respective] These pi es are arranged parallel to eac 1 other ina' orizontal plane and have their outer ends connected with U-shaped pipe-couplings 1) b which Specification of Letters'Patenti connect with the outer ends of tant feature of my invention. a
A'rnn'r oFFIoE the burner! rangement is well known, t
From the op osite side of thereserv extends a pipe 5, which leads tea-val ing (1, lwhichzforms'a 'necessary an U The valve-casingis formed-'withaeha d, which communicates with a vertical, pip action (1 and with-apassage ca,;-whieh-1ea' to a valve-opening (Z "This-opening-is'hon trolled by a needle-valve, d2; which pas throughand has a tln-eaded-engagementf. ith y the radial branch diof the val esc singialsei passes through a suitable stufling-box en the end of such branch and has a wheel or disk (1 secured to its other end to facilitat ethetmm ing of the valve; The valve-casing is also formed with a chamber d, which communig, cates with any suitable source of hydroea'b. hon-fluid supply, and through the valvesopening (Z and assage d is also in comma nication' with t e chamberd"; From the chamber d leads a valve-opening d, which is controlled by a needle.valve d, which passes through and has threaded engage- 1 ment with the radial branch 11 of the valvecasing andis supplied with adisk d on its 7 outer end. The valve-opening d communi cates with the pipe (1 through a passage (1.
The vertical pipe (1 3' which leadsfrom the valve-casing, communicates through a suit-.- able elbow-coupling with the lightin or gen-- erating pipe 6, which extends over t e auXiL iary reservoir b and over the pipes bF'and has mo its outer. end closed; Openings etarerprovided in the under side of the pipe e, from": which the fluid escapes when the valve d" is opened. j Fromthe constructiondescribed'it will be seen that with the valve d closed and the valve al open fluid enter ng the chamber al under pressure from a suitable source'of supply will pass up through the chamber d passage d, to chamber d", from .Which'it will pass through pipe d to the pipe e, from which it will be sprayed through theholes 6 upon I the surface of the burners.
=6 thus heating them in a short time;
- sage d to pipe d, 1 to pipes b fwhich generate gas, and this will-pass to the burners c, where it will be consumed in the usual rmanner. As the igniting-tube remains in .fthe' 'zone of the flames from the burner, it is kept hot, so that if the burners should be burners.
' shut ofi temporarily the retained heat of the tube would facilitate the relighting of the Having thusdesci'ibed my invention, What I claimas new 1s" p 1 In a hydrocarbon-burner, the combina- 'IlJiOIl of h'onzontally arranged tubular burn- I ers, an auxiliary fluid-supply reservoir ar- 1 ed adi'acent to one end of said'burners,
'. supp y pipes connected with saidresen volr, passing-over said burners and connected with theouter end of the latter, means for sup dying fluid to said reservoir, and means for lghtin'g said burners, said means arranged above and parallel with said burners.
' 2. Ina hydiiocarbon-burner, the combination of parallel horizontally-arranged slotted tubular burners, an auxiliary fluid supply reservoir arranged fadjacent to. one end of said burners, fluid-supply pipes connected with said reservoir, passin over said burners and connected with the otiier end of the latter, means for supplying fluid to said reservoir, and means for lighting said burners, consisting oi. a pipe connnunicating with the fluid-supply and extending longitudinally of said burners, said. pipe having holes in. its under side, means for controlling the supply of fluid to said pipe and means for controlling the supply of fluid to said reservoir.
3, In a hydrocarb'onburner, the combination of horizontally-arranged slotted tubular burners, an auxiliary fluid-supply reservoir,
pipes respectively connected with said reservoir and said burners, a fluid-supply pipe leading to said reservoir, a perforated lighter or -1;igniting-pipe arranged longitudinally of said'burners and above same, means for conducting fluid to said reservoir supply-pipe and said igniting pipe respectively, said means comprising a valve-casing having independent passages connnunicating with said pipes and with a fluid-supply chamber in said casing, and valves controlling said passages, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I ailix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
