To all fwhom t may concern:
. Be it known that I, GEORGE M. BERGEN- STLERHOE, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of St. Louis and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hydrocarbon-Burners, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in hydrocarbon burners and has for its object to provide a burner of the class which may be readily applied to cook stoves, ranges, heating stoves, furnaces, and in fact, any type of coal burning stove where it is possible to install same in the fire-box` thereof.
A further object of the invention, is to provide a device having top and side burners, and a generating tube surrounding the upper burners.
A further object ofv the invention, is to provide means for regulating the flow of gas to one, or both, of the upper burners and means for regulating the flow of gas to both of the side burners.
A still further object of the invention, is to provide a needle valve `and Bunsen arrangement for controlling the supply Vof generated gas and air to the several gas distributing tubes which lead to the burners.
With the aboveand other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, arrangement and combination of parts hereinafter `described and nally pointed out in the claims hereto appended.
In order that those skilled in the art to which the invention appertains may know how to make and use the same, I will describe the construction illustrated, in detail, and refer by reference characters to the accompanying drawings forming apart of this specification, in which- Figure 1, is a plan view partly in section, of a hydrocarbon burner constructed in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 2, is a sectional view, taken on line X-X of Fig. l.
Fig. 3, is a detail of the needle-valve and Bunsen or mixing tube arrangement.
In carrying out the aim of my invention, I use two upper burners A and B comprising the lower-plates 1 and 2, and the inverted cover- like burner top 3 and 4 which are detachably secured to the lower burner plates 1 and 2, respectively, by means of the stove bolts 5. Each lower burner fplate `1 ange 6 to help position the upper burner plates 3 and 4 thereon on the lower burner plates 1 andv 2. Each lower burner, plate 1 and QisY also provided with a gas inlet opening 7 and 8, respectively.
The lower burner plate 1 is secured to one Y end of the gas distributing pipe 9, while the other burner plate 2 is secured tofone end of the gas distributing pipe 10. Y
A gas distributingchamber 11 is formed at the inner ends of the gas distributing pipes 9 and 1.1, las clearly shown in Fig-2.
A valve, consisting of the valve-headsp12 and 13 is mounted on the inner end of the operating stem 14 for reciprocatingmovef ment in the gas distributing chamber 11; The valve- heads 12 and 13 are-adapted to seat themselves in the valveseats 15 vand 16, respectively, when it is desired to shut off the gas supply from one or the other of the upper burners A and B. The operating stem 14 is threaded as' at 17, atv its outer end, and is adapted to pass through the threaded plug 18. The extreme outerl end of the operating stem 14 is provided .with av 1handwheel 19 for turning theoperating stem'14V distributing chamber 11 for distribution to the various burners, as clearly shown.. The
opposite end of the mixing' tube 20 is pro vided with a gas receiving chamber-21 which is formed between the end of the pipe 20 and the valve seating wall22 whichhas a tapered orifice 23 for the reception of vtheV needle point 24 of the screw-threaded'valve stemY 25.l

The needle valve not only controls the flow of gas to the mixing tube 2O butfisvalso used to keep the needle valve orifice clean from Y carbon deposits, as is manifest.
A pair of atmospheric tubes 27 are ar-V ranged on opposite sides of the mixing tube 20 and communicate at one end, through the passages 28, with the mixing tube 20 vadjacent the needle valve orifice -23 so that the gas leaving thek orifice may Siphon air through the tubes 27 for mixture Vwith the gas during its travel through the mixing tube 20 to the distributing chamber 11. i
A suitable generating pan 29 having the channels 30 is adapted to surround each of the burners A and B as shown in Fig. 1. The generating pan is provided with a valve 3l having a three way passage, so that oil may be directed from the supply pipe 32 to one or both ends of the generating pan, as desired. A valve 32 controls the low of oil to the generating pan.
A two loop generating pipe 33 is suitably supported above the channeled generating pan 29 and is adapted to surround each burner A and B so the same may be readily heated when oil is burning in the generating pan, as is manifest. A valve 34: controls the flow of the oil to the looped generating pipe 33. One end of the generating pipe, designated 35, is suitably connected with the gas supply chamber 21.
It will be noted from Fig. 2, that after gas has been generated in pipe 33 and the gas permitted to flow to the burners A and B, that the flame from each burner will play laterally against the generating pipe and keep the saine heated for generating the gas to be directed to the burners.
The device is also provided when desired with a pair of auxiliary or side burners 36 and 37. These burners are each provided with a hollow arm 38. Each hollow arm 38 is provided with a suitable valve 39 controlled by means of the operating stem 40. The side burners are connected to the hollow stub arms 41 in any well known manner so that they may be easily removed, or attached for communication with the gas distributing chamber .11, as desired.
The operation of the device is as follows:
First a supply of oil is deposited in the channel 30 of the generating pan29 by opening valve 31, and valve 32. Vhen the channel 30 is filled with oil, the valve 32 is turned off and the oil ignited. The burning oil will heat the generating pipe, as is manifest. l/Vhen the generating pipe hasbecome hot the oil control valve 3l is opened permit ting a supply of oil to pass through the generating pipe and become vaporized while passing therethrough. The gas thus generated is permitted to travel tothe supply chamber 21, as is manifest. As the needle valve 25 is opened, it will be observed, the
gas linds its way out of the orifice 23 and into the mixing tube 20, siphoning as it passes the air passages 28, a suiiicient amount vof air to make the desired mixture of gas and air to be transmitted to the gas distributing chamber 11.
Now, if gas is to be directed to both burners A and B, the valve- heads 12 and 13 are moved, by turning the valve stem 14, to the position shown in Fig. 2. It gas is only wanted for burner A, then the valve head 13 is moved into its seat 16, thus shutting oli' the flow, of gas to burner B, and vice-versa. 1f the side burners 36 and 37 are also toV be used the valves 39 are opened so that thelgas from the distributing chamber 11 may enter one or both of the side burners, as desired.
The many advantages of the hereindescribed burner will readily suggest themselves to those skilled in the art to which it appertains.
l/Vhat I claim is:
In a device of the class described, a burnerhead, a generating pan surrounding said burner, a generating tube positioned above said generating pan in such a manner that the flame from the burner may continue to heat the generating tube after it hasbeen initially generated, means Jfor controlling the iow of oil to thevgeneratingpan, means forcontrolling the flow of oil to the generating tube after it has become hot, a gas receiving chamber having connection with one end of the generating tube, a mixing tube, air inlets to said` tube, a needle valve for controlling the flow of gas into said mixing tube, a gas distributingchamber arranged'at one end of the mixing tube, a gas distributing tube connecting said gas distributing chamber with the burner, a valve arranged in said gas distributing chamber for controlling the flow of gas to the burner, an auxiliary side burner, means for connecting said burner for communication with said gas distributing chamber, and a valve for controlling the flow of gas from said chamber to said auxiliary side burner.
