' Letters Patent No. 84,040, dated November 10, 1868.
INIPRQV'ED APPARATUS .'OR SIZING GLASS CYLINDERS.
The Schedule rexen'ed to in these Lettrn Patent animaking part lof the same.
To all whom; 'it may concern I Be it known that I, S. R. WILMOT, of Bridgeport, in the county of Fairfield, and State of Connecticut, have invented anew Improvement in Apparat-us for Sizing Glass Cylinders; and I do herebyr declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification and represent, in-
Figure l, a top view,
Figure 2,'a side view, and in Figure 3, a vertical central section.
This invention is designedas an aid in the manufac ture ofy glass cylinders, the object being to form the cylinders of identically the same diameter as'each other, designed more particularly for the manufacture oflampchimneys.
In some classes of burners, it is essential that the base of the chimneys be all of the same diameter; especiallyA is this the case in the sun-burners, where the glass is held by springs upon the inside. In the usual manner of forming the chimney, it is impossible to make the chimneys uniformly round and ofthe same diameterI By, my invention, the base of the chimneys are `all kof the same size, and perfectly round in form, or, if
not round, uniformly of the same shape; and the invention consists in the arrangement of several fingers, over which the base of the hot chimney is set, the fingers extending up into the chimney, and arranged so that, by the operation of a cam or similar device, the several fingers are simultaneously' spread or opened within the chimney, expanding the chimney to the size required, the said fingers being adjusted for the purpose.
To enable others tofully understand my improvement, -I will describe the same as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
A is the base, set or formed upon a plate, B, the said base being of larger diameter than the chimney or cylinder to be sized. The said base is grooved or constructed so as to receive several lingers, a, more or lessin number, which I prefer to secure therein by a spring-or ring of rubber,'0, around the base and iin- Agers, as seen in figs. 2 and 3, the tendency of which is to force the upper end of the fingers inward, as in fig. 2.
-At a convenient point between the lingers Iarrange 'a cam, D, constructed so that, by turning or moving the saidcam, the fingers are acted upon simultaneously, to be thrownout, as denoted in red, g; 3, shownhere as being moved by a lever, E, connectedto the camlt by a shaft, F, as seen in g. 3. y
' The chimney to be sized is, when in the proper state,
placed overI the fingers, as denoted in fig. 3; then,'by f' 'turning the lever', the fingers expand, as denoted in ,ing the ngers.
Though designed to operate upon the inside of the cylinder, the same result may be accomplished by arranging the ngers soas to receive` the cylinder between them, and contract the glass by pressure upon I the outside` This may be accomplished by simply rey versing -the operation of the cam and spring, the spring to throw open the lingers, and the cam loperating to close them.
In the' use of the fingers as shown, the surface of the cylinder will be a series of flat surfaces, corresponding to the number of lingers. Should this be objectionable, I place `around the lingers a divided band of thin steel, or any suitable metal, the fingers operating within the band, to expand and\force the band outward, which will press evenly upon the inner surface of the glass, and consequently produce an even surface on the glass; or, to size the outer side ofthe cylinder,
the bandmaybeplaced inside -the lingers and contracted.
A bead, or other irregularity, may be formed upon the surface, by constructing the fingers with the necessary projections or recesses on the lingers` Having fully -described'my invention, j What I claim as new and useful, and desire to secure-by Letters Patent, is-
The arrangement of the several fingers a, operated so as to size the cylinders, by opening the said fingers upon'the inside, or closing them upon the outside of the said cylinder, substantially as set forth.
S. R. WILMOT. Witnesses:
ELI J. BLAOKHAM, I. 1?.y DENCH.
