Description

C. H. FITCH. Stovepipe Thimble.
Patented June 5, 18,66.
m mzk W TNFS'SESZ' UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES H. FITCH, OF AUBURN, NEW YORK.
STOVE-Pl PE TH l M BLE.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 55,268, dated June 5,1866.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES H. FITCH, of the city of Auburn, in Cayuga county, New York, have in vented a new and Improved Mode of Constructing Thimbles for Stove- Pipes where the same are required to pass through partitions; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in constructin g the ends of thimbles of cast metaliron or brass as the case may be-instead of tin or sheet-brass, and also the mode of securin g the several parts together.
In order that others skilled in the art may make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and mode of operation.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the thimble. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation. showing the manner of connecting the several parts and securin g the same together.
A is the outside, and B the inside or small, cylinder. '0 is the lower end piece, and D the top of cylinder, and E the hole for the pipe.
The holes F F F F F on the top of the thimble are for the purpose of admitting cold air into the air-chamber. A like number of holes corresponding in size are made in the lower end for the same purpose for obstructin g the radiation of the heat.
The small cylinder B is made of suitable size to close firmly onto the flange rising upward at G on the lower end piece, C, and the flange projecting downward from the smallest diameter of the ring D, (shown at C.)
The large cylinder A is turned under the lower end piece, C, as shown at H H. The top of said cylinder A is let into a groove running round the lower side of the top piece, D, and portions of said cylinder at the parts J J J J J are allowed to pass through the top and are then closed or headed over onto the top of the top piece, D, one of which is shown at K.
Having above described the construction and mode of operating my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The top plate,D, and bottom or end plate, C, with the cylinders A and B, constructed and combined as and for the purposes set forth.
2. Closing the ends of the cylinder A under the bottom and over the top, in the manner and for the purpose above described.
CHARLES FITCH.
