U ITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
[JAMES W. SUMMERS, or AUGUSTA, GEORGIA.
r H U B-CA P No. 840,172. Specification of Letters Patent. Patented J an. 1, 1907.
" Application filed June 8, 1906. Serial No. 320,785.
Be it known that 1, JAMES W. SUMMERS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Augusta, in the county of Richmond and State of Geor ia, have invented certain new and useful mprovements in Hub Bands and Caps, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in the construction of hub bands and caps attachedto the outer end of the hub of wheels I used on buggies, carriages, and other vehicles; and the objects of my invention are to provide simple and inexpensive means on the bands and on the cap to quickly unite said parts, the means being such as to leave the interior surface of the band free of any obstructive collar, the retaining edges of the pockets used to engage with the springcatches of the cap being within the body or walls of the band, said cap preventing, as
usual, the loss of the nut holding the wheel on the axle, the drop ing of oil or other lubricating substances V entrance of dust or dirt between the hub and the axle. I attain these'object s by the construction illustrated in {the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of the hub band andf'cap constructed in accordance with my invention, said parts being united together. Fig. 2 is'a side view of the cap. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of thehub-band', showing the small square pocket therein. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the inside of the cap, showing the spring-catches attached thereto and guided thereby.
In said drawings, A represents the hubs band, which is made of any suitable material and has formed in the inner portion of its walls, a short distance from its outer end, a pocket B, which is'shown'square, but may be cylindrical, to receive the end of one of the may be ornamented with a design in relief,
and a small cap or projection d in the center. Said cap D has on the inner side a band of thin sheet-metal pressed, soldered, or brazed thereto. The free edge of said band is provided with longitudinal slitsor scallops e to om the hub, and the.
A. Within the band E of the cap D and-secured to the latter by solder or by brazing are s ring-catches F, preferably of spring- Wire, aving a coil 9 formed thereon to add to its resilience The free end of the wire is bent outwardly at ri ht angle to its body to form a head f or small knob, one of which is to enter into engagement with the walls of the pocket B and the other with the walls of the perforation C, the tendency of the springwire of the catches F being to force said catches toward and against the walls of the hub-band A and into its pocket B and perforation CI To guide the wire, of the sprin g c'atches F and also to support it laterally, sothat it will not be accidentally bent, one of the scallops of the band E is inwardly bent and slitted at e the slit being to receivethe wire ofthe catch F, and the edges of said slit are to sustain and Around t e band E of the cap D under its projecting collar h there is placed a washer 'i, .of felt or of soft leather, to form a close-fitting joint between it and the outer end of the hub-band A.
To insert the cap D into the outer end of the hub-band, its band E and scalloped portion and spring-catches F are inserted Into 1protect the Wire of the catches'F.=
said hub-band by first insertin one of said catches into the pocket B whi e the cap is slightly tilted, and then the operator presses with his finger or its nail upcnthe other spring catch'until it enters within the hubband, andthen pressing the cap intoits seat the head of the other spring-catch enters into engagement with the walls of .theperlforation C, the head f of the catch being flush witli tlfia cap with the ot or hand it immediately becomes disengaged from thehub-band.
Having now fully described my invention,
I claim- 1. .Ina combined hub band and cap, the i band A, provided in the inner face of its wall with a pocket B, and diametrically olpposite it with a perforation C therethroug IIO with the cap D and spring-catches secured therei f in, each spring-catch having on its free end a secured Within'the cap D and passing through v laterally-bent head, one of said heads to ensaid slitted scallops and ded thereby into gage the pocket B and the other to en age engagement with the 00 et B, and the pertheperforation O, substantially as descri ed. f0rat1on C, substantia y as described.
5 2. In a combined hub band and cap, the In testimony whereof I affix my signature 15 band A provided in the inner face of its wall 1 in presence of two witnesses.
with a pocket B and diametrically opposite JAMES W. SUMMERS. it withaperforationCtherethrou h,with the Witnesses:
cap D, its band E having a sea loped edge J. H. JACKSON, IO and two scallops slitted, the spring-catches JNO. O. WILKES.
