Letters Patent No. 84,016, dated November 10, 1868.
IMPROVEMENT IN CULTIVATORS.
`To all whom 'it may concern;
- a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and tothe letters of reference marked thereon.
My invention consists of a peculiar construction of cultivators, provided with a novel arrangement of toothed roller and gear-Wheels for pulverizing soil'.
`In the accompanying drawings- Figure lis a top view of my improved cultivator.-
Figure 2 i's a longitudinal section of the same on the' line :v x; iig. 1.
The frame, A, of my cultivator is made with abow, A', in front, in order to embrace the roller B. One share, C, is placed inthe middleV front of this roller, and tivo vbroad shovel-plo Ws, D, nearly under the roller.
'A fourth shov'el-plow'is placed on. the right handof the machine, at E, tig.'1, for billing.
The toothed roller B is set in motion by a lseries of gear-wheels, as follows: The vvheel F travels on the ground, and sets in motion the gear-wheel G, on the same shaft or axle. The latter wheel gearsy into the Wheel H, which, in turn, gears .into wheel I, on the shaft of roller B.y By this arrangement the roller B is set in motion.
Under the roller B is a toothed bar or spring-con-i cave, M, which, in connection with roller B, Will pn1 verize the soil, tear in pieces the clods, and loosen the dirt from grass, roots, and Weeds, in a thorough manner. The plate M'has a rocking motion, in orderto release or let pass stones or other rigid obstacles, which are liable to be caught, and might otherwise break the Inachine. The spring L holds the plate M with suicient firmness to tear clodvs, but yields to such strain as might otherwise break the cultivator.
In the use of my machine, either the hiller E, the spiked roller, or concave, or al1 of them, may be removed, thus adapting the machine to diierent work,-
as may be desired.
I do not broadly claim the use of a spiked roller, or gear-Wheels for operating the same.
Having thus fully described my invention,
WhatI claim, and desire to secure by Letters Pat-V ent of the United States, isl. The spiked roller B, in combination with the spring-concave or toothed bar M, arranged and operated substantially as set forth.
2. Also, the arrangement of the hiller E, in combination with the share C, in the front part of the frame, and the pulverizing-roller and concave, substantially as described.
ALFERD F. STONER'.
