Be it known that I, ORvILL H. SAwDY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Iola, in the county of Allen and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toy Crossbows; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and eX- act description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention is an improved crossbow; and it consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a crossbow embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view of the same, taken on the plane indicated by the line a a of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a detail longitudinal sectional view of the same, taken on the plane indicated by the line l) b of Fig. 2, and F i0.' 5 is a muzzle elevation of the same.

The tframe 1 is approximatelyin the form of a gun-stock and is made from a single piece of wire bent to form the stock portion2 and the pair of parallel longitudinal arms 3. A band 4 connects the said arms 3 at a suitable distance from the outer ends thereof and forms the support for the which is provided with a hook 6. bers 7, each bent from a single strip of suitable sheet metal and formed or provided with clips 8, which project from the outer sides thereof and are bent around the arms 3 to secure the said barrel members between said arms with the side edges of said barrel members nearly in contact with each other and forming longitudinal slots 9 between them for the reception of the string l() of the bow 11. The inner ends of the barrel members are reversely beveled, as at 12, to guide the bow-string into the slots 9 when released by i the hook 6 of the trigger. The bow 11 is doubled in form, as here shown, and is made om a single piece of steel wire, so that, in effect, the bow consists of a pair of members 13, connected together at their ends, as at 14, and otherwise spaced apart, the ends of said f l i l members 13 converging toward each other, as shown. The central portions of the bow members are straightl and are connected together by a plate 15, made of suitable metal, and the side edges of which are bent around the central portions of the bow members 13, as at 16. Thisl plate has a central opening 17 for the reception of the outer end of the barrel and is provided above and below said opening with lopenings for the reception of the outer ends ofthe arms 3 of the stock, nuts 18 being secured on said ends of said arms to secure the bow-plate and bow iirmly thereto. The arrow or dart shot by the crossbow may be of any suitable construction within the scope of my invention, and I do not desire to limit myself in this particular. A dart of suitable form is indicated at 19 in Fig. 1.

Having thus described my invention, what claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A crossbow comprising a frame having a pair of forwardly-extending arms, a bow having a plate secured to the front ends ,of said arms and provided with an opening, and a pair of barrel members secured to the inner sides of the said arms and forming bowstring slots between the inner edges, the outer end of the barrel formed by said members being coincident with. the opening in the bow-plate, substantially as described.
