Description

PATENTED JAN. 1, 1907.
J. 1). RIPSON. FIREPROOF STRUCTURE.
APPLI GATION FILED SEPT. 30, 1904- lsL,
JOHN D. "RIP'SON, OF .PEPPERELL, MASSACHUSETTS.
FIREPROOF STRUCTURE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed September 30. 1904. Serial No. 226.609.
Patented J' an. 1, 1907.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN D. RIPsoN, a citizen ofthe United States, residing at Pepperell, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Fireproof Structures, of which the following description, in connection with the I accompanying drawin s, is aspecification,
like characters on like parts.
This invention has for its object to lessen the awings representing the liability of fires, and especially doors' and door-casings.
In accordance with my invention I have covered a door and door-casing with metal, each side of the door being made in a single piece of sheet metal interlocked in the manner to be described, and the door-casing is pieces of sheet metal interlocked at theiredges.
Figure 1 in elevation shows a door and door-casing protected by metal in accordance with my invention; and Fig. 2 is a horizontal section through the door, on an en-J larged scale.
The building is supposed to be of brick or. steel covered with fireproof mortar.
The structure, referring to Fi 2, is pro tected in the doorway by a metalfic door-casing, shown as composed of three pieces a a, a, the two pieces a and a being substantially of the same shape, each being connected with the structure by suitable screws, or it might be rivets, and each having one edge bent to form a ocket, in each of which may be forced one of t e like lips 2 of the piece (1/, having the shoulder 3, constituting the door-'amb.
The door B is composed of outer and inner one-piece faces I) 1), preferably of metal,
struck into shape in a press to leave sunken panels. The outer and inner sheet-metal faces are united about their side and top and bottom edges by like metallic edging-pieces b made as troughs, the central part 4 of the troughs forming the finish for the edges of the door, while the parallel flan es 5 receive against them the innersides of t e door-faces,
as shown in Fig. 2 a I Between the flanges 5 I have shown tubular distance-pieces 6, and through the inner and outer faces I) b, the flanges 5, andeach tubular distance-piece I insert a rivet 7, the ends of which are upset, as at the right, Fig. 2. Any desired number of these tubes and rivets may be used and at any desired distance apart, the more rivets used the more sohd the door.
I insert at about the center of the width of the door a brace d, which may be shaped as shown in Fig. 2 or .of some other suitable shape, and near said brace insert rivets 8. g
Preferably the space between the two sheet-metal plates or faces I) b will be filled in by wood, as shown by dotted lines e, the thickness of the wood being equal to the s ace between one and the opposite anel; an the spaces between the woo and t e inner sides of the faces. I) b I may, and preferabl Wlll, fill with asbestos or some other usual e-resisting material, as-at f.
The door is hung on usual hinges h. Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is I 1. A door comprising metallic faces, me-
tallic edging-pieces of substantial U shape in cross-section inserted between said faces at the edges of the door, tubular distanceieces between thesides of the U-shaped e ging- *pieces, rivets extending through the faces,
sides of the edging-pieces and tubular dis tance-pieces, a brace or distance-piece extending from the top to the bottom of the door alon its median line between the faces, anot er brace or distanceiece extending from one side edge to the ot er side edge of the door, and rivets adjacent said braces connecting the faces.
2. A door-casing com osed of two metalhc ieces to overlie the si es of the wall of theuildin each piece havingagroove orpocket, and a t d metallic piece provided with a jamb and having its edges received within saidpockets. v
In testimony whereofl have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOHN RIPSON.
