DRAFT EQUALIZER. APPLICATION FILED JAN. 23. 1906.
2 SHEETSSHEET 2 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 25, 1906.
Application filed January 28, 1906. Serial No. 297,452-
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM A. HUTOH- ENS, a citizen of the UnitedStates, residing at Eldora, in the county of Hardin and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in DraftEqualizers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention pertains to improvements in what may be termed draft equalizers, more particularly for plows.
It has forits object to provide, as noted, to equalize draft or remove side draft from the plow'when the pull or draft should predominate laterally of the line of movement thereof, as in hitching or applying to the plow an additional horse or pulling power abreast with the usual amount or pulling force or sized team and to carryout the same in a simple and effective manner.
It consists of certain structural features substantially as hereinafter fully disclosed, and particularly pointed out by the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating the preferred embodiment of my invention, Figure 1 is a perspective view thereof as applied to a plow-beam. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a detached perspective view of the casting or bracket and adjunctive parts for the attachment thereto of the connecting-rod between the clevis-bar and draft-bar or plow-beam, and Figs. 4 and 5 are opposite side views of the parts shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
In carrying out my invention I employ a clevis or perforated angle-bar 1, having connection at its angle by a suitable bolt "2 with the usual plow-beam clevis 3, the upstanding also apertured or perforated end portion of said part 1 being effective for attachment through its upper hole to the common per pendicular plow-beam clevis and through its lower hole to other clevises, none of which, however, is shown. The twisted draft-hook 4 is suitably applied to the clevis-bar 1.
A bracket or casting 5 for attachment to the plow-beam or draftbar well back toward its inner end and right-angled in general outlinehas its upright plate-like meniber applied laterally to said beam or bar and its horizontal member outstanding from the latter, as clearly shown. Said upright or vertical bracket member is provided with parallel vertical slots 5, and upon the opposite side of the plow-beam is arranged a clampplate 5*. Said bracket and plate are coupled together and firmly held upon the plow-beam by suitable bolts 5, passed through apertures in said plate and the-slots 5 in the upper part of said, bracket and apertures in the lower part of the latter, said bolts passing above and below the plow-beam. Said slots provide for accommodating the bracket or casting to different-sized plowbeams, as will be readily understood.
A short brace rod or bar 6 effects connection between the clevis-bar 3 at its inner-end and the plow-beam near its forwarder outer end, adapted at its ends for insertion through said parts and suitably nut-equipped.
A connecting-rod 7. has one end suitably nut-equipped and effective to be connected to the draft or clevis bar 3. at the extreme outer end of the latter, while the opposite end of said rod is adapted to be adjustably connected to the horizontal member or arm of the bracket 5-, preferably by means of a yoke or eye ended bolt 5, receiving said end of the brace-rod and insertible through any oneof a number of adjusting-holes 5 insaid bracketarm, the purpose of which will be presently seen. Said connecting-rod 7 is in sections, suitably coupled together by a setscrew-equipped sleeve or collar '7' to provide for accommodating the connecting-rod to beams or draft-bars of different lengths, as will be readily appreciated.
It will be noted that when it may be required to apply or hitch an additional horse or horses or pulling power to the clevis-bar 1 at the left of the plow-beam, as suitably provided for by the clevis 3 and adjusting apertures or perforations in saidbar, the inner end of the connecting-rod 7 is adjusted accordingly by suitably disposing the eye-ended bolt 5 to which said end of said rod is connected, in the requisite perforation 5 of the bracket 5 in a direction outward from the plow-beam, thus neutralizing the side draft which would otherwise result, as will be readily appreciated. In other words, a plow which may be usually drawn with a certain number of horsesas, for instance, two, or three, or four, or more-may have connected or hitched thereto abreast with these and laterally of the line of movement of the plow an additional horse or horses.
I claim 1. A device of the character described, comprising a perforated clevis-bar adapted to be appliedlaterally with relation to a draftbar or beam, at the outer end of said bar or beam, a bracket applied oppositely to said beam or bar, well toward the inner end of the latter, and a connecting-rod between said clevis-bar and said bracket, effective for attachment to the outer end of said clevis-bar and suitably to said bracket.
2. A device of the character described, comprising a perforated clevis-bar having an upstanding or right-angled perforated end portion and adapted to be applied laterally with relation to a plow-beam or draft-bar, a bracket oppositely applied to said beam, a connecting-rod effecting connection between said clevis-bar and said bracket.
3. A device of the character described, comprising a perforated clevis-bar, means effecting connection therebetween and a draft-bar or beam at the forwardor outer end of the latter, a bracket applied oppositely to said beam and having its outstanding arm provided with adjusting-holes, and a connecting-rod having one end attached to the outer end of said clevis-bar and its opposite end let into an eye or yoke ended bolt engaging any one of the adjusting-holes in said outstanding bracket-arm.
4. Adevice of the character described, comprising a clevis-bar adapted to be applied laterally with relation to a plow-beam or draft-bar, means effecting connection between said parts a right-angled bracket applied oppositely to said beam, well toward the inner end of the latter and having bolted thereto a clamp-plate also applied to said beam, said bracket having its horizontal arm provided with adjusting-holes, and a connecting-rod having one end suitably connected to the outer end of said clevis-bar and its opposite end upturned and received within the eye or yoke end of an adjusting-bolt adapted to engage any one of the adjustingholes of said bracket-arm.
5. In a device of the character described, a clevis-bar applied laterally with relation to the outer or forward end of a draft-bar or beam, means effecting connection between said parts, a bracket having its horizontal or outstanding arm provided with a number of adjusting-holes, means effecting the connection of said bracket oppositely to said beam or draft-bar, well toward the inner end of the latter, and a connecting-rod having one end connected to the outer end of said clevis-bar and its opposite end upturned and let into an eye or yoke formation of a bolt insertible through any of said adjusting-holes of the bracketarm, said connecting-rod being in coupled-together or adjustable sections.
In testimony whereof I afliX my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
