UNITED STATES PATENT FFI. CHARLES T. @ARNm-IAN, or DENVER, ooLonADo. HANDLE FOR PNEUMATIC HAMMERS No. 839,727. Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Dec. 25, 1906.
' Application filed July S1, 1906. Serial No. 328,583.
To all whom it may concern,.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES T. CARNAHAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at. enver, in the county ofDenver and State of Colorado, have invented new and useful Improvements in Handles for Pneumatic Hammers, of which the following is a speciiication.
This invention relates to handles for pneulo matic ammers, and aims to provide a hancharacters, l denotes the c linder of the pneumatic hammer and whic has mounted 55 upon one end thereof acap 2, the latter being provided with screw-threads ada ted to engage with screw-threads formed) upon the periphery of the cylinder. Centrally ot the upper face of the cap 2 a protuberance 3 is 6o provided which is exteriorly screw-threaded, and engaging the exterior screw-threads of which will enable the 'rotatin or turning of A. f the cylinder of thefhammer in ependently of ff the handle, and which will also permit of the I5 handle and cylinder being rotated or turned if'. in unison.
' Primarily the invention aims to improve the construction of {Sineumatic hammer set forth in application, erial N o. 280,194, filed 1 20 September 26, 1905 and to this end the invention consists in providing a hammer with when the latter 1s in operative position and',`
- a buifer for relieving the operator to a conthermore, to allow of the grip swiveling 7 5 'fa l siderable extent of the jar and vibration upon said sleeve. When the ip 6 is in powhen the hammer is operated. sition, so that the collar 7 wil surroundfthe The invention further aims to provide a sleeve 4, the'flange 5 connects the grip to the hammer for pneumatic drills in a manner as cap 2. Surrcundinv the sleeve 4 and arhereinafter set forth which shall be simple in ranged below the collar 7 is a washer 8, and 8o its construction, readily connected to the inter osed between the washerS and 'then w lcylinder ofthe hammer, strong, durable, efer ace of the cap 2 and surrounding-"t e 30 ,icient in its use, comparatively inexpensive ower portion of the sleeve 4 is a resilient an'- to manufacture, and embodyin means to nular member 9, constituting a buffer or top with alaterally-extending annular lian e 6'5 5. The retaining-sleeve 4 whensecured 1n clamping position has its rlower edge resting' upon the upper face of the ca 2.
The reference character 6 denotes agrip, formed of a U-shaped bar ofsuitable masyo terial, terminating in a co'llar?, the inner diameter thereof being such as to enable the said collar to surround the retaminglsleeve 4 overcome the jar of the piston of t 1e hammer. cushioning means to relieve the Jar upon the 85 With the foregoing and other objects in operator when using the hammer.'- view 'the inventionconsists of the novel con- The grip is coupled to the cap, so that the' I" n structin, combination, and arran ement of grip cannot be rotated independently of the parts hereinafter morespecifically described, cap throu h the medium of a connecting-leand illustrated in the accompanyin drawver 10, which is pivoted between a pair of 9o ings, which form a part of this speci cation, ears 11, projecting laterally from the cap -2 and wherein is shown the preferred embodiand has bearin against its-lower end the ment of the invention; but it is to be underup erfree end oaleaf-sprin 12. This spring v stood that changes, variations, and modiiis edly connected at its Fewer end 'to the cations can be resorted to which come within cap 2. The connecting -lever 10, when 95 the sco e of the claims hereunto appended. moved to coupling position so as to couple. In t e drawings, wherein like reference the grip to the cap 2, is ositioned betweena characters denote corresponding parts pair of laterally-exten lng lugs 13,A formed throughout the several views, Fi re 1 is a l integral with thecollar 7. Byprovidingthe view, partly in vertical section, o a handle connecting-lever 10 in a-manner-as stated Qitfroc 1n accordance with this lnvention, also showis evident that when it is positioned betweening a portion of thevcylinder of the hammer. the lugs 13 the grip will be connected tothe So Fig 2 is a side'elevation; and Fig. 3 is a top cap, so that the grip cannot-'be rotated indel plan, a portion of the grip being shown in pendently of the cap; but when the leveril dotted lines. v'
Referring to the drawings by reference i the grip will rotate in unison with the-calpe? 1s moved to a position between-the lugsI-Bz-iog" The function of the spring 12 is to retain the connecting-lever 10 in its lowered or inoperative position.
From the fore oiii'g description, taken iii connection with t ie accompanying drawings, it is evident that a handle for a pneumatic hammer is set up which will permit of the handle being rotated continuously and independently of the cylinder of the hammer, which will also enable the rotating of the handle and cylinder ofthe hammer continuously in unison, will providefa cushioning or butler means to relieve the jar upon the operator, owing to the reciprocation of the piston of the hammer and which, furthermore, will enable the gripping element of the handle to be readifl connected and disconnected from the cylindjer or the cylinder-ca Although the cylinder is shown as provi ed with 'al cap for oneend thereof, said cap having a protuberance, yet the protuberance can be formed integral with the cylinder, as will be evident.
Durin the operation of drilling it is essential t at the tool be Vrotated or turned.
his is usually accomplished in portable pneumatic hammers by the operator rotatmgzor turning theentire device from the handle end thereof; but by the application of the'means hereinbefore referred lto it is not necessary for the operator to utilize more than one hand when rotating the tool. The other'hand would ress the handle and remain stationary. lhis is not'the case when operatin pneumatic hammers now` in general use, for tereason' thatthe left han'd (oron'e hand) has to rturn with the device when the device is'being turned 'back'and forth by the right hand (orr'the other hand but it will be evident that-bythe applica-tion of the means hereinbefore set forth it is not necessary to utilize-more than one 4hand when the device is rotated,-that hand being the hand which ips the air-supply pipe or the cylinder, and lirthermore, b providing: the pneumatic hammerwith-tlre means as hereinbefore set forth theoperator can press his body against the handle of the devicen during the rotation thereof, 'thereby retainin the device in operaftiveposition-and'at t ie same time ermitting of'tlic operators hands being ee.
he operator then,l when occasion so requires, can 1 turn the cylinder' of the hammer' independently of the handle at the same time that the operatorls body is pressed against the handle which 4retains the' device in yoperativeposition during tlie act of rotating or turningthe cylinder. Furthermore, the interposl'tion of the resilient or cushioning means between theI collarof the grip 'and the top of the 'cylinder or cap prevents the operaftor4 from 'feeli the jar or vibration-due to the operation-o the hammer toany great extent.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a meumatic hammer, the combination with t c cylinder thereof having an exteriorly screw threaded protuberance extendingfrom one end thereof, a grip terininating in a collar, and a sleeve engaging the screw-threads of the protuberance and provided with a flange engaging the collar for swivelly connecting the grip upon: one end of the cylinder to enable the grip to be1rotated independently of the cylinder.'
