Be it known that I, Louis MYERS. acitizen of the United States, residing at Derby, county of New Haven, and State of Connecticut, have invented certain'new and useful Improvements in Type-Tritihg Machines, of which the followingis a specification.
l My invention relates inpart to the combination of type-bars, key-levers for operating the same, and roller-bearings tlnoughthe medium ot which the key-levers transmit moA tion to the type-bars, also to the combina-l tion of key-leverscapable of longitudinal sliding movement and a carriage-stop device controlled by the longitudinal movement of either of such key-levers, whereby the carriage may be stop ed at different points by the movement of the respective key-l evers.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a planview of a type-writing machine illus trating the invention. Fig. 2 is a side view of the saine with some parts omitted. In ord er to reduce friction between the iingerkeylevers 1 and the type-bars actuated thereby, the connection is made through a rollerlbearing 2, mounted in the horizontal arm of a bellcrank lever 10, the vertical arm of which is connected by a link 3 with a crankarm 4,
projecting from the heel of the type-bar 26, which is l'ulcrumed at 5. The roller-bearings 2 between the several key-levers 1 and the bell-cranks also permit sliding longitudinal movement of such key-levers in order that such key-levers may serve the further purpose of controlling a column-stop, as hereinafter described, for tabulating and analogous work. To this end Ithe longitudinal movementof either of such key-levers 1 *l to lj is'made to release the carriage from the escapement stop, and such movement of the several key-levers shifts to diil'erent extents a column-stop device whereby the carriage when so released from the eseapement device will be stop ed at different points, according to which key-lever is so shifted.
The key-levers 1a, &c., are provided with upwardly-projeeting rigid studs 6, adapted in the sliding movementof the respective keyelevers to engage with the horizontal lower bar of a rocking frame 11, formed as shown partly in dotted lines in Fig. 4 and fulcrumed at 11x 1n the fixed trame 38. The
function of this rocking frame 11 is to retract the sliding clutch 43, forming part of the escapement device, whenever either of the key-levers 11, &c. is slid backward, so as to release the carriage and allow it to slide under the force of a suitable feed-movement spring until arrested by the column-stop. I have shown at laa suitable feedemovement spring acting by torsion on a vertical shaft 13, on the upper end oi'whieh is mounted a semicireular vgear 14, which imparts feed movement to the carriage 51 by gearing with the rack 52 thereon.
The respective key-levers 1a to 1j in their rearward horizont-al sliding movement contact with projecting tappet-studs 12n to 12J', projecting from the bottom bar ol the stopirame 12, which is of approximately triangular form, as shown in `Fig. 4, and rocks on a horizontal axis 12x. The combination ot vertically-vibrating key-levers 1a, 1b, 1C, capable also of longitudinal sliding movement; type-bars 26; suitable connections through the medium of which said type-bar levers are actuated by vertical movement of said key-levers; escapement-lever 1 1 actuated by the longitudinal movement of either of said key-levers; rocker-bar stop-lever 12, having stop-tappets 12a of unequal prominence engaged by longitudinal movement ot'the several key-levers so as to move-the rocker-bar stop-lever 12 to ,ditlerent extent; and the steppedstop actuated by the lever 12 and the Astop-dog carried 'by the carriage-spring gear-wheel to arrest the movement of said gear at different points according to the adjustment of the lever 12.
