Description

Pfw. LATHROP. ANIMAL MUZZLE.
APPLICATION IILIID MATH; I906.
PATBNTED DEG.' 25, 1906.-
UNITED sr r s P T NT onrron.
a FRANK- w.- LATHROP, or CATHAY, NORTHDAKOTA;
ANIMAL-MUZZLE.
Sp eoification'ofLetters Patent,
Patented Dec. 25, ions.
Application filed May 1 4, 1906. Serial No- 316,758.
To a whom. it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK W. LATHROP, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cathay, in the county of Wells, State of North Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Animal-Muzto provide 'a device of the kind. mentioned that will be exceedingly simple in construction and entirely effective in use without subjecting the calf, or cow to undue discomfort so long as the former does not attempt to suck, but in its-operations effectively pre-' cluding the calf from reaching the teats of the udder by reason of the certainty ofone or more of the pikes of the muzzle prodding the cow in such a way as to cause her to resist the efforts of her calf to suck. I i The invention consists of a single pike-carrying band of metal supported on the nose of the calf, the pikes of which band all extend radially outward from the sides and upper portion, excepting a single pike which extends forward in a line at right angles to the pikes, which single pike or poke is supported on the top of the nose of the calf, and with the pikes operates to effect a weaning of the calf, but does not prevent it from drinking or grazing or feeding from the ground, all as I will now proceed to describe with reference to the drawings, and'the figures of reference marked thereon, forming a part of this specification. I
Figure 1 is a side view of the invention, showing it as applied to a calfs head. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same, representing it as detached. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the nose portion of the device.
Similar figures of reference designate similar parts or features, as the case may be,
wherever they occur.
In the drawings, 10 designates the noseband, which is composed of a strip of metal,
as light as may be, almost encircling the nose of the calf and provided at intervals with pikes riveted at their inner ends or heads 11 to the nose-band and projecting radially outward therefrom, being sharpened on their 5; outer ends so as to render the cow uncomfortable when they come into contact with her, but not so as to seriously injure her.
12 is a pike supported on the top of the nose of the calf and projecting forward at a right angle to the course of the radiating pikes and sharpened at its end. The pike '12 is formed on the end of a length of a strap of steel or iron connected to the top of the noseband and bent downward. and backward where at its rear end it is riveted to the top of the nose-latch 13, which is of leather and passes over the head and under the chin, where its ends are adjustably connected by buckles, as at 14, first having been riveted to the endsof the nose-band 10, as at 15. The
cheek-strips 16, of metal, are riveted at their rear ends to the throat-latch 17, of leather, and intermediately to the neck-band 18 and nose-latch 13, also of leather, and at itsforward end to the nose-band 10. The ends of the neck-band 18 are adjustable by means of a buckle, as are also the ends of the throatlatch and nose-strap. As little metal as possible is allowed to touch the animal, so as to avoid uncomfortableness, particularly in winter.
No obstruction is offered to the calf drinking or pasturing or feeding from the ground, though it is impossible for it to reach the teats of the'cows udder without so prodding the animal with one or more of the pikes that it will cause her to at least side step to avoid the muzzle and so wean the calf.
The muzzle is easily adjusted, is absoo lutely eflicient without being cumbersome, and is not likely to come-off or get out of place when once properly put on.
What is claimed as the invention is A calf-weaning muzzle, comprising a nose- 9 5 band, pikes projecting radially at intervals around the same, a nose-latch, a strip connected with the nose-latch bent upward and extending forward on the calfs nose, and
terminating in a sharpened poke or pike, at a roov 5 strips, one on each side, connected with the right angle to the radially-disposed pikes, a In testimony whereof I afiix my signature buckle for cognegting the eids of the1 nosein presence of two Witnesses. latch, aneckan connecte at its en sWith the nose-band, a throat-latch, and cheek- FRANK LATHROP' Witnesses:
