' COAT-HANGER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
- Patented Dec. 25, 1906.
To a/ZZ whom t 11i/wy concern,.-
Be it known that I, IGNATIUS GERAOI, a citizen ofthe United States, residing at Washington, in the District of Columbia,
have invented new and useful Im rove-y provide a'coat-'hanger of the general type above referred lto in which the supporting members u on which the shoulders of the coat rest'wi l have an increased su portingsurface approximating the genera contour of the human shoulders, so that the shape of the garment will be maintained while supported u on the hanger.
A further object is to construct the supporting portions of the hanger from a blank of flexible sheet material flexed to the proper form and to provide means for maintaining the blank in its flexed form andmagainst collapsing. i
A further object of the invention is to providey a device of the character set forth especially adapted for use in connection with the Well-known forms of hangers comprising al Vcurved supporting-bar having a narrow supporting-surface, said device serving to provide hangers of such form with a supportingsurface of sufficient area and of proper form to conformV to the shape of the shoulders of a coat and to preserve the contour thereof.
The invention consists in a coat-hanger constructed in a manner to be fully described hereinafter and the novelty of which will be particularly/,pointed out and distinctly claimed. Y l
I have fully and clearly illustrated my invention the accompanying drawings, tc be taken as a part of this specication, and Wherein- Figure 1 is a view in front elevation o f a coat-hanger embodying my invention. Fig.
2 isa vertical transverse central section through the coat-hanger. Fig. 3 is a top. plan view. Fig. 4 is a bottom plan view.
the suiportingmembers of the hanger are forme Fig. 6 is a planI view of a b ank of the same configuration as that shown in Fig.
5, said blank being provided with afastening f means for securing it in flexed position, which means differs from that shown in'Figs. 1 to 5; and Fig. 7 is a central transverse section through the hanger, showing the fastening means just referred to in position for receiving the blank in flexed position.
Fig. is a plan view of the blank from which Referring to the drawin s, 1 designates a blank of stout but ilexib e sheet material which is of a contour to be presently described and which is flexed to form the (garment-suportin element of the improve hanger, said blankgbeing Shown in its flattened condition for packing. Thisblank is bounded upon its lower side edge by an approximately straight linel 2, and the ends of said blank are cut upon concave lines 3, which are slightll inclined outwardly from the point at w nier e with the line 2. The upper edge of the blanlll, edge 2, is bounded y oppositely-inclined lines 4 4, which extend upwardly from the uper ends of the lines 3 to a point approximating the center of the said upper edge, at which point said blank is cut out to provide a \.lshaped recessed portion 5, the apex of the said recess extending well within the bod of the blank and opening into a substantial y heartshaped space 6, bounded on its lower side by a concave line 6, at its ends by convex lines 6b, and on its up er side by oppositely-inclined lines7 whicli extend towar eachother and merge with the sidelines of the recess 5.
By reference to'the drawings it will be seen,
that a blank formed as described will consist of twooppositely-disposed lobes or sections 8 8, connected at their inner lower portions by an integral intermediate or neck portion 9 and (provided at their upper portions with inwar ly-extendin arts which are free and dii'sconnected' from each other when the blank is in its flattened position. It will also be seen that the opposite side lines of each lobe or section 8 converge toward the outer end portions of said sections, and it will also be seen upon examination yof the vdrawings that the longitudinal center of each section 8 is on a line joining a middle point on the concave line 3 with a similar or sections 10,j
IOO
point on' the curved line 6b at the end of the l l space 6. The longitudinal center of each section I have indicated by a dotted line 11, as
shown.
fing 12',w
The blank as above described is formed in the neck ortion 9 with a vertical slot or openhich is located on a line constituting the vertical center of said neck portion and at a point just beneath the o ening 6, said slot performing a function to e made apparent hereinafter.
In order to form the supporting portions of the coat-hanger, each of the lobes 8 is flexed along thedotted lines 11, so as to provide oppositely-projecting shoulder pieces having road curved supporting-surfaces 13, which will conform to the general contour of the upper parts=of the shoulders of a coat, and the depending portions 14 14, which lie in approximately parallel planes and constitute,
respectively sup orts for the back and front of the coat, so t at they hang in about the same position as when the coat is being worn.l
It will be seen that when the blank is iiexed, as just set forth, the inwardly-extending parts or sections 1() will overlap each other, and means is provided for detachably locking said sections together for the purpose of maintaining the blank in flexed position. Tins means is shown as consisting of the ordinary commercial head-and-socket fastening, the
socket 15 being carried by one of said sections and the head 16 by the opposite section, any desired number of said fastening devices bemg employed.
Means is provided for securing the depending portions 14 14 together in proper position to prevent their s ringing away from each other, said means eing so constructed and acting in such manner as to brace said depending sections against collapse under the weight of the coat supported by the hanger, and this constitutes one of the salient features of the invention. This means will now be described. Secured to each of the lobes 8 at a point intermediate its ends and adjacent the straight side edges thereof is a bearing formed by a loop 1 6 struck up from the cen-l tral portion of a sheet-metal strap 17, the oposlte ends of which on either side of the said oop are firmly secured to the bl'ank by means out for packing, e
of eyelet-rivets 18 or other suitable means, if desired. In this bearing-loop 16 is pivoted a lateral arm 19 on a rigid connecting or locking bar 20, the arrangement being such that the bar swin s in a plane at right angles to the blank an may be swung down into contact therewith when the blank is flattened so that `'there are practically no objectionab projections on the surface of the blanks to interfere with them being laid in facial contact when acked. The free or swinging end of each of) the connectmg-bars is provided with an engaging hook or projection 21, constructed to engage a loop 22,
lar tothe loop 16 and secured ad'acent to the opposite edges of each lobe 8. t will be seen that when the rigid connecting-bars are arranged with their hooked ends in engagement with their respective loops 22, the epending sections 14 will be secured together against outward movement, and also that, owing to the rigidity of said bars 20, the collapse of the shoulder-pieces incident to the weight ofthe garment supported thereon will be effectually prevented, so that the said shoulder-pieces are at all times maintained in such form as to coincide with the shape of the shoulders of a coat.
A loop 23', similar in form and construction to the loops 16 and 22, above described, is secured to the intermediate portion 9 of the blank, in which loop is pivoted a short connecting-bar 24, having a hooked end 25, adapted to engage a loop 25', secured to the inner face of one of the extensions 10, said bar serving to hold the intermediate parts of the flexed blank in proper form and against collapse, as heretofore stated.
The blank being flexed and secured 11i proper position by means of the rigid connecting-bars and also the head and sockets referred to, the garment form or hanger is complete and may then be employed in connection with the well-known form of hanger. Briey stated, said well-known form of hanger consists of a curved bar 26, supported at its center by a suitable suspension-hook 27, adapted to be hooked over any pro e1' supporting device, and the shank 2S of t iis hook 27 is formed at its lower end with a lateral extension 29, the free end of which is secured to the curved bar 26, heretofore mentioned. When the form is to be placed upon the hanger just briefiy described, the curved bar 26 is disposed Within the space between the depending sections 14, and the shank of the suspension-hook 27 is inserted through the slot 12 in the blank, and the shoulderpieces of the form rest u on and are supported by the said bar 26, t 1e slot 12 permittingr a slight vertical movement of the form upon the hanger, so that the weight of the coat will always force the form into position to be su ported upon the bar of the hanger.
n Figs. 6 and 7 I have shown a form of fastening means for securing the blank in fiexed position, which means consists in forming in one of the extensions 10 a slot 30, which extends longitudinally of said extension, and upon-the opposite extension 10 is arranged a loop or eye 31, which is constructed from a sheet-metal strap and is secured to the blank in the same manner as the loops 16 and 22, heretoforel described. The slot 3() and the loop 31 are so disposed that when the lobes of the blank are flexed along their respective lines 11 and the extensions are made to overlap with the one carrying the loop 31 outermost said loop will project through said slot IOO IIO
portions 14 14 and when in i l be located directly opposite the bar 24, the hooked end 25 of which is AIn adapted to be inserted in said loop.l It will ythus be seen that bythe construction just described the depending portions 14 14 are not only secured against outward movement and braced against collapse, but theextensions are secured together and the blankV y heldin flexed position.
From the above description, taken in connection with the drawings, it 4will be seen that I have devised a garment-hanger which is inexpensive of manufacture, sim' le in construction, and which will efficient y and fully accomplish all of the objects heretofore stated. f i
