Be it known that I IGNATIUS Gamer, a citizen of the United States, residing at Washington, in the District of Columbia,
' have invented new and useful Im roven'ients in Coat-Hangers, of which the ollowis aspecification.
v y invention has relation to new and useful improvements in coat-hangers, and more especially to that type or character cf han ers which support the garment-by the 'shou ders thereof, so that the garment will be suspended in a position as nearly as possible that it assumes when being worn.
The primary object oi-the invention is to construct the hanger, of the character mentioned having characteristics of adjustment which will render it adaptable for use with coats tailored to have either square or drooping shoulders.
A further object is to provide a coata hanger which will be simple in construction,
disposed shoulder-pieces having a pivotal satisfactory in use, and arranged and connected that they ma readily and conveniently disassembled purposes of packin so as to occupy sma 1 space when shipped in large numbers. y
The invention consists in'providing a susension device which supports oppositelyaving its parts so for connection at their meeting ends and means for adjusting them on their. ivots, each shoulderiece consisting ofv a b ank of suitable fiexi le sheet material bent to have the proper conformation to properly support the shoulders of the coat, means being provided to'maintain saidblanks in their bent or flexed position and against collapsing.

Each of these s oulder-pieces is made from a sheet or blank -2 of strong flexible sheet material, such as cardboard, strawboard, leatherboard, or other similar material.
The blank 2 is bounded on its sides by conver 'ng lines 3 3. The wider or inner end of sai blank, or that end which constitutes the end of the shoulder-piece which is pivoted to the suspension device,is curved, as shown at 4, and said curved edge is formed with a recess or cut-away portion 5, which serves a pu ose to be made more fully a parent hereina er. Each blank is provi ed also at a point on each side of the recess with an aperture 6, said a ertures when the blank is bent to form the s oulder-piece alining with each other to provide bearings to receive a ivot for the shoulderpiece, as will be present y set forth. The apertures 6 are preferably bounded by an eyelet 6", constituting a bushing tov prevent wear of the edges of said a ertures incident to movement of the shoul erpieces on their pivot. To form the shoulder-pieces, each blank is bent or flexed along its longitudinal center to form the curved supporting-surface 7 and the oppositel -dispose depending side portions 8, .as 0 early shown in-the drawings. Means is provided for connecting the side portions 8 to each'other, so as to maintain the blank in its flexed position and against collapsing, which means is shown as consistin permanentlyand pivotall attached to the inner side of one of the epending portions 8, as at 10, and having its opposite end bent at an angle thereto to form a hook 11', adapted to detachably engage an e e or other suitable device 12, secured on t e inner side of the portion 8 opposite to that to which said connecting bar is 1pivoted. said bent portion extending through said loop and havingits end bent or upset, as at 9*, to prevent dislodgment of said bar 9.
The strap or plate 10" is secured in position by means of the well-known commercial eyelet-rivets, which rovide an extremely inexpensive and at t e same time efliclent fastening. device. The eye or loop for the hooked end of the c'dnnecting-bar is shown as having the same form and construction as the strap or plate 10, and therefore need not be specifically described.
It will be seen that when the blank is flexed to form the shoulder-piece and the hooked end of the bar 9 engaged within the eye 12 the blank will be effectually held in its flexed position and against collapsing and that the disengagement of the hooked end of said bar will permit the blank to be flattened out so that it may be conveniently acked for transportation. When the llank 1s flattened out, the connecting-bar 9 may be folded down upon the face of the blank so as to occupy but small space and whereby the blank and its appurtenances are practically flat, as shown in Fig. 6. g
The shoulder-pieces constructed as above described are duplicates in every detail, so that no rights or lefts have to be considered when forming the blanks or in assembling said shoulder-pieces to provide the complete hanger. As shown in the drawings it will be seen that the blanks 2 are formed at the wider end with two extensions .13 13, which are formed b the recess 5. Theshoulderpieces, as a ove described, are arranged with the extensions 13 in interlocked relation, the extension on one side of each shoulder-piece being disposed in engagement with the corresponding extension on the opposite shoulder-piece, each shoulder-piece having one of its extensions arranged in the space between the extensions on the opposite shoulder-piece and one extension arranged outside said space, the said extensions overlapping each other, as clearly shown in Fig. 4 of the drawings. When the shoulder-piece are in the positions just set forth, the apertures 6 therein register and are adapted to receive a pivot upon which the shoulder-pieces swing when their inclination is being ad-' justed.

The shank of this hook is formed with an oflset portion 15 to provide a clearance-space for the collar of the coat when the latter is in position on the shoulder-pieces, and below said offset portion the shank is carried downwardl in a vertical direction, as at 16, and is then oubled upon itself, as at 17. the end of the shank being carried back along the vertical portion 16 to a point intermediate the ends of the latter and is then bent at an angle 'its free end project for a short distance .be-'

In the space between the interengagin extensions of the shoulderpiece and u on t 1e pivot-pin 18 is a spacing sleeve or look 21, against which and also the doubled portion of the shank of the sup orting-hookthe pivoted ends of the shou der-pieces are forced and held b the wing-nut 20 when the latter is secured upon the threaded end of the pivotpin 18, whereby to give rigidity to the structure.
It will be seen from the above description taken in connection with the drawings, that the shoulder pieces are free to swing upon the pivot to assume various inclinations suitable for .supportin a coat having either square or drooping s oulders, and means will how be described for holdin the shoulder pieces in the position to whiddi they may be adjusted. The ineans I preferably employ for accomplishing the object stated consists in providing one of the extensions of each blank 2 with a plurality of socket-fastenings 22, arranged in a; curved line and located substantially as shown in Fig. 6 of the drawings, and the opposite extension of the blank is provided with a single head 23.
It might be stated that the extension of each blank which, when the shoulder-pieces are formed and assembled, comes between the extensions on the opposite shoulder-piece, is the one carrying the head, and extension on the outside carries the sockets, the arrangement being such that the sockets on one shoulder-piece will be in position to cooperate with the head on the o posite shoulderpiece, and by swinging the shoulder-pieces on their pivot to the desired inclination and snapping the socket-fastening on one shoulder-piece over the head on the opposite shoulder-pieces, said pieces will be held immovable on their pivots and maintained in adjustable position.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is 4 1. In a coat-hanger, a supporting device, shoulder-pieces movably connected at their inner ends to said device, each shoulder-piece consistin of a blank of flexible sheet material flexe along its longitudinal center, rigid means for maintaining the blank in flexed position and against collapsing, and means for adjusting the shoulder-pieces to various angles of inclination.
