INDEPENDENT ATTACHMENT FOR LAMP-CHIIVI NEYS, 80 o- Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed June 19, 1906. Serial No. 322,367.
Patented Dec. 25, 1906.
T0 on whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS H. FURMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Seward, in the District of Alaska, have invented new and useful Improvements in Independent Attachments for Lamp-Chimneys and the Like, of which the following is a specification. v 1
This invention relates to devices used as independent attachments to lamp-chimneys and other like devices to form a rest or support for heating different bodies or vessels by the flame or heat of the lamp or of gas and also for heating hair curling and crimping irons or for any other purpose.
The primary object of the present improvement is to provide a support having a convenient structure to adapt it for use either as a means for holding a cup or similar vessel on the top of a lamp or gas shade and also to provide 1n the same device means for holding and guiding a curling or crimping iron or im lement, whereby one device may be used or different purposes at a minimum cost of manufacture and without materially increasing the structural features of rests or supports of this class as ordinarily constructed.
The invention consists in the construction and arrangement of the several parts, which will be more fully hereinafter set forth.
In the'drawings, Figure 1 is an. elevation of a portion of a chimney, showing the improved attachment ap lied thereto in edge elevation and as hol 4 ing a hair-crimping iron. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the improved device or attachment. Fig. 3 is a ottom plan view thereof.
Similar numerals of,reference refer to like parts throughout the several views.
The numeral 1 designates a disk-like body having such diameter as to fit over the u per end of a lamp-chinmey or over a gas-s ade and provided with a central opening 2 and a handle 3. Rising from the upper surface of the body 1 are radial ribs 4, which connect with a central circular boss 5, surrounding the openin 2, the upper surfaces of the boss and rlbs being flush. The ribs at'their outer extremities are formed with vertical projections 6, and the innerportion of'the boss 5 has notches 7 therein communicating with the central opening 2, the object of theseprojections and notches being to permit the air to freely pass inwardly and outwardly over the body 1 when a cup or other similar vessel is placed on the attachment for the purposes of heating water or other liquids, and thus obviating" any tendency of causing the lamp to smoke or interfering'with combustion and the illuminatin properties of the lamp or gas. The opemng 2 is adapted to removably receive a hair-curling iron 8, as shown by Fig. 1, the boss 5 adding sufiicient thickness to the body 1 to provide a positive guide and.
support for the iron 8.
' he under or bottom side of the body 1 is formed with a series of radial flanges 9, having their outer end edges inwardly beveled, as at 10, to adapt the device to be inserted in the'upper end of a lamp-shade. The lower free edges of the flanges 9 also have projections 11 at their outer terminals, which may serve as feet or supports for the attachment when it is removed from the lamp and disposed u on some cooling means, and thus permit t e air to freely circulate under the flanges. The under side of the body 1 also has an angular guard 12 thereon in line with the handle 3 to shield and render the latter cool, or, in other Words, to reduce the heated condition of the handle'as much as possible, so that it may be readily grasped.
It is proposed to construct the improved attachment of any suitable .metal adapted for the purpose and may be either sheet form or cast.- It is'also proposed to avoid the use of solder or forming joints thatv mi ht become se arated owing to the intense T1681? to which the attachment is subjected When in use.
The improved attachment will be found exceptionally convenient, and it will be understood that it Will be made in various sizes. By having the flanges 9 formed with outer beveled edges 10, as set forth, the body 1 is adapted to fit the upper. ends of chimneys or shades of different diameters, said flanges forming vents between the said body and the upper edge of the chimney for the escape of the roducts of combustion from the interior oft e chimney.
What I claim is An attachment of the class set forth comprising a body having an o ening through the center thereof surrounded by a boss with vent-notches in the inner edge of the same, ing a handle projecting outwardly therefrom and radial ribs extending-from the saidboss which is shielded by said guard. I and terminating in projections which extend ln testi1nony whereof I ailix my signature above the upper edges of-said ribs, all arranged in presence of two Witnesses.
