Letters Potent No. 83,921, dated November 10, 1868.
IMPROVEMENT IN TATTING-SHUTTLE WINDERS The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part: of the sama.
To all whom 'it 'may concern:
Be it known that I, E. S. BURNS, of La Crosse, in the county oi' La Crosse, and State ofIiseonsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for 'Winding Thread on 'Batting-Shuttles; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this speci- .lication, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, like letters indicating like parts Wherever they occur.
To enable others skilled in the art to construct and use my invention, I will proceed to describe it.
My invention relates to tatting-shuttles, and consists in the construction oi' a novel device for filling them.
In the drawings- Figure 1 is a perspective view, and
Figure 2 is a side elevation.
As is well known, it requires a considerable length of time to Wind the thread in the tatting-shuttle preparatory to its being used. This work, when performed by hand, as it is ordil'iari'ly done, is exceedingly slow and tedious, owing to the closeness and pointed forms ofthe ends ofthe shuttle, as well as the number of turns the thread has to make.
he object ci' my invention is to furnish a simple little machine, by the use oll which the shuttle may be quickly and easily filled, and thus serve to save both time and labor.
In constructing my device, I make a platform, A, circular, or of any other desired forni, and to it attach an upright, B, which, near its upper end, I provide With a projecting axle or pin, j, and mount thereon a drivingwheel, C, having a handle, y, for turning it, as shown in iig. 1. About the driving-wheel (l, I pass a cord, h, and connect it with a pulley, e, mounted on the side ol" an upright, E, attached to the platform A, so that the pulley e and the driving-Wheel C may be in the same vertical plane. To the pulley e, l attach a disk, F, so as to turn with it, and the side of the disk F, opposite the pulley e, I provide with a light wire staple, c, and a wire hook, d. The staple'and hook I place at or near opposite ends of a diagonal line, and shape them, as
place an upright guide-post, G, with a small slot or eye near its upper end. These uprights I arrange on the platform A, in about the relative positions shown clearly in ii r. Il.
Inoperating my device thus constructed, I place the spool a, containing the thread, on the pin, D, so that it may move loosely thereon. I then slip one end of one side ofthe shuttle l) in the staple c, and catch the l opposite end of the saine side with the hook d, in such a manner as to hold the ends of the shuttle open, as shown in iig. 1. This done, I pass the end ofthe thread on the spool a through the eye in the guiding-post G, and attach it to the centre-pins of the shuttle l), and revolve the driving-wheel C with the handle g, which, in turn, revolves the pulley e, disk F, and shuttle b. which is soon filled by thread drawn from the spool a, The eye in the guide-post G keeps the thread in a line with the shuttle. As soon :is the shuttle is filled, it may be taken off and another' substituted and filled, and so on indefinitely. In this way, by giving the shuttle a rapid rotating` motion, I ain able to ll it easily and cheaply.
Having thus described my invention,
VVh-at I claini, is-
A machine for filling tatting-shuttles, consisting of the rotating disk F, operated by the wheel (l, and having the stationary loop c, and the pivotcd loop or hook d, arranged thereon, all substantially as shown and described.
