Be it known that I, FRANCIS I. DU PoNT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wilmington, county of Newcastle, and State of Delaware, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Apparatus for Igniting Primers in Wells, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being bad to the accompanying drawing, which forms a part of this specification.
By my invention, as I will hereinafter speoifically show, the fuse is subjected to an intensely hot atmosphere of gases .under pressure for a considerable period, which insures the ignition of the fuse. I accomplish this,
speaking generally, by using a comparaimprovement, which is shown in side elevation, partially in section, in the accompanying drawing.
In the drawing, in is the fusecase, having the fuse p therein. At the bottom of the fuse-case is the steel disk g, having a central opening through which the fuse 1) passes to t e primer 8.

At the upper end of fuse p is a steel disk 0, having a central orifice through which projects the upper end of fuse p. c is an iron pipe pressed tightly against pipe 6 and having an orifice through which tube b passes, rubber packing d closing the opening between tube b and pipe 0 and closing the upper end of the chamber in which the ignition and smokeless powders are placed. it is of sufficient strength to prevent rupture at the pressure of the well at the depth where the explosion is designed to take place. The interior ofchamber b is filled with rosin.
The operation is as follows: If, for instance,
the depth at which the fuse is placed is such that the outside pressure on the apparatus is, say, five hundred pounds, the chamber in which is the powder being sealed, the internal pressure is that of the atmosphere. Electric current being passed through the wires 0, a and resistance -11, the ignition-powder l and ring n are ignited. The flame from this ignition-powder and ring passes up through olpenings f in block 1), creating a combustion t roughout the cylinder g. This cylinder is of slow-burning powder. During the burning of cylinder 9 it is evolving gases, which are held from escaping by seal (1, and the pressure increases until it reaches a point high enough above that of the outside pressure to rupturethe packing d. This, however takes an appreciable time, and during 1 that time the fuse p is subjected to the ac- .tion of the fiame and of the intensely-hot atmosphere of the gases, thus positively in suring the ignition of the fuse. When the packing d is ruptured, the tube 1), with the wires, maybe removed and again used.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to protect by Letters Patent, is
1. In an apparatus for firing wells, in combination, a fuse, a chamber provided with a rupturable seal, slow-burning powder in said chamber, the fuse extending into said powder-chamber, and means to i nite said powder whereby the fuse is su jected to the flame and heated gases until the pressure produced is suflicient to rupture the seal.
2. In an apparatus for firing wells, in combination, a fuse, a tube, ignition-wires in said powder in said chamber, the fuse extending into said powder-chamber whereby the fuse is subjected to the flame and heated gases and the ignition-wire tube held in place until the pressure produced is sufficient to rupture the seal.
3. In an apparatus for firing wells, in combination, a fuse, a chamber provided with a rupturable seal, powder in said chamber, the fuse extending into said powder-chamber, and means to ignite said powder whereby the fuse is subjected to the flame and heated gases until the pressure produced is suflicient to rupture the seal.
4. In an apparatus for firing Wells, in combination, a fuse, a tube, ignition-wires in said tube, a chamber provided with a rupturable seal surrounding said tube, powder in said chamber, the fuse extending into said powder-chamber whereby the fuse is subjected to the flame and heated gases and the ignitionwire tube held in place until the pressure produced is sufficient to rupture the seal.
5. In an apparatus for firing wells, in combination, a fuse, a chamber provided with a rupturable seal, a powder-block in said cham her having longitudinal openings, said fuse extending into said powder-chamber, and means to ignite said powder.

10. In an apparatus for firing wells, ir combination, a fuse, a chamber provided with a rupturable seal, powder in said chamber, the fuse extending into said powderchamber, ignition-powder, and means toignite said powder.
11.
