To all uihom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, GERHARD C. KLIEWER, a citizen ofthe United States, and a resident of'Ghicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Tablet-Making Machines, of which the following, when taken in 'com ection with the drawings accompanying and forming a part hereof, is a full and complete descr1ption,sufiicient to enable those skilled in the art to which it pertains to unders'tand, make, and use the same.
The ob'ect of this invention is to obtain a machine y means of which a large number of tablets for medicinal or food purposes may be made within a given time by asingle attendant. p F

When thus constructed, the punches k and Z and the thimbles M'M, provided with holes corresponding to the punches, may be removed from the machine, and punches of a different diameter may be inserted in-place of the ones removed, and thimbles provided with holes therethrough of substantially'the same size as the punches used may be insert ed in the annular flanged. 1 Provision is thus made for adjusting the machine to compress medicinal or food tablets of different diameters. I i i i When the plungers K K arerespectively in a raised position, the lower ends of. the punches secured therein are raised out of the holes in the thimbl es' M M, corresponding thereto, and when such plungers K K are in a depressed position the punches 7c is secured therein are well entered into the holes in thimbles M M corresponding thereto, respectivel-y. When the plungers L L are in a depressed position, the punches Z Z, secured therein, are entered in the holes in the thimbles M M, respectively, corresponding thereto to form abutments against which the. material contained in such holes and underneath .the punches 7c 7c are pressed to compress such material into tablets, and when such punches -Z Z. are in a raised position the upper ends of such punches are substantially in the same ,planeas the upper end of the thimbles M M, .so that the tablets formed in the machine are raised thereby out of the holes in which they have been compressed and will be swept from the annularfiange J by any ebscribed.

The upper endof the springs O O abut against the under side of the spider C, (see .Fig. 1) so that as the screws P P are turned in the screw-threaded holes g g in abutment Q the depressing-rollersN N N N are moved slightly up or down and incidentally sidewise. The exact distance to which the several plungers K K are forced down as said plungers are carried underneath the depressing-rollers N N N N in the rotation of the drum F is thereby controlled.
4 On each one of the plungers K K there is mounted a coiled spring R, (see Fig. 1,) with the lower end thereof abutting against the annular flange H- and the upper end thereof abutting against the collar S (which i's 'rigidly annular flange I and theother end against the collar S, which is firmly secured in place 011 the plunger. After a plunger K has been. carried underneath a de nessing-roller N, and thereby depressed, the plunger L corresponding thereto is then carried over the one of the elevating-rollers T T, and thereby raised, as illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawings, and as such plunger is raised the spring R thereon is thereby compressed, and hence by the resiliency of such spring the plunger is returned to its initial position after the same has passed over the roller T.

To supply material to be compressed into tablets by this machine, I provide a hopper (as hopper U, Fig. 1) with as many downspouts as are desired thereto. I have illustrated a machine provided with four downspouts u u an, four depressing-rollers N N N N, and four elevating-rollers T T T T, with a large number of plungers, punches, and dies on the drum F.
The down-spouts U are expanded. at the lower end a thereof, where such down-spouts are joined to the plate V, Fig. 1,so that the contents of the down-spouts may be spread along the top of the annular flange J. The plate V may also serve to brush from the top of the annular flange J tablets made in the machine, as hereinbefore stated.
In the operation of this machine the drum F is made to continuously revolve, as by beveled gear-wheels W WV and shaft X. As the drum rotates the several plungers are brought underneath the depressing-rollers N iively, so that where four of each kind of rollers are placed in the machine, as illustrated in the drawings, and twenty-six sets of the several plungers, punches, and dies are placed in such machine, as is illustrated in the drawings, one hundred and four tablets are made at each revolution of the drum F and shaft E.
I claim 1. In a machine for making tablets, arotatable Verticalshaft, a drum on the shaft, dies and an upper and lower series of punches on the drum, yieldingly-mounted wheels arranged to depress the punches of the upper series a plurality of times at each revolution of the drum, means to adjust the tension of the several wheels to obtain corresponding density to all of the tablets made in a given die at 'eaehrfivolutio'n of the drum, and means to lift the punches of the lower series a number of times corresponding to the number of depressions of the punches of the u )per series at each revolution of the drum su stantially as described.

The combination of a base, standards on the base, a rotatably-mounted vertical shaft, a drum on the shaft punches and dies on the drum and rotatable wheels yieldingly mounted in the ath of the u per series of punches, the mechanisms yie dingly holding the wheels comprising bolts on which thewheels' rotate, leaf-springs through which the bolts extend, and means to move the bolts longitudinally to vary the tensionof the' springs, respectively; substantially as described 3; 'A base, standards on the base, a flat spring provided with a hole therethrou h,a movable abutment fitting against one o the standards and provided with a screw-threadscrew-threaded hole in t e movable abutr 5 ment and through one of the standards, and a .wheel rotatably mounted on the inner end of the screw; substantially as described.
