v//Ml Wl/Whg f i i lf ATTORNEYS to draiwthc dies inwardly. ,A plunger 21 is adapted to reciprocate within thelopening in mandrel 2 and this plunger has cam snrfaces 22 formed thereon such that when the plunger is raised1 these cam surfaces will en gage the inner ends of dies 18 and force the dies radiallyv outward. AtA its lower end plnnger 2l is secured to a cross-head 213 haw s, the enI of which are pir/@tally mg connected to ie'reis 2e whose outer en s j jotall'v connected to levers piriiitaily mounted upon the. table i. 'lne cross-head has a. connecting rod Btl pjvotally connected thneto and to cranks Z7 upon the shaft lt?. 4Tach of the levers operati-s a dief-od 3() and plunger Q9 to coact with the oppositely disposed die lS'to form a link and mesh. that link with links at the lower edge ot the sleeve of' fabric on mandrel in the marmer described in my patent above re ferreti to.
:tt will be seen that the portion ot' the snrifacc of mandrel 2 'which is provided win the spiral grooves does not extend iipwardly i iin the leere great. distance; ln-
. cad, the mandrel i2 is ,dweil in size and a eeve -li is mounted tor rotation thereon. reterably this sleeve i; provided with balllearings 32 so that i" mayvrotate quite Yreely, the upper balls 'l g held inplace by a 'plate 33 secured to the top ot the man drol by a. screw 34. The exterior surface ot the sleeve 3l. has grooves formed thereon and l tiall'v as set itorth.
extending in the direction ot the axis ot the sleeve as shown at 35 in Figs. and The sleeve of fabric is supported between the two rotatable annular members or sleeves 31 and its lower end exten down over the tcrit-:i of Athe mandrel which provided piral grooves. The axial ,ridges ent faces of the sleeves 5 and 3l enter corresponding axial depressions upon the. surfaces of the fabric. For this reason, when member is rotated step by step by the pawl and ratchet mechanism above dcscribed` the sleeve of fabric and the member 3l will rotate with it. Bv reason ot the provision of rotatable members on both Asides of the fabric, both provided with ridges enteringr thc depressions in the fabric. the. movement ot the fabric with the sleeve every time that sleeve is moved, and to the full extent to which the sleeve moves, is in sured. As the fabric is so rotated step by step, the coaction of the spiral ridges on the mandrel '2 with spiral deprefnons in the surface ot' the fabric causes the fabric to bc moved in the direction et its axis as it is rotated. i i practice l have found that a Loaepofi relatively small surface of the mandrel provided with the spiral grooves is sufficient to insure the axial movement of the fabric as the latter is rotated. lVith the mechanism here describedY the fabric will always be moved so as to present the proper point thereon to the forming tools for thc reception ot the next link or links to be added to the fabric. l
Haring described my invention, what l claim new therein and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
' 1. ln a machine for makinglink mesh, a support for the mesh comprising two members on opposite sides of the mesh, means for moving said members and the mesh together step step in one direction, and means for nef, in the mesh relatively to said members in another direction, substantially as Set forth.
n a machine for making link mesh, a support tor the mesh comprising two parallel members hating their adjacent faces shaped to correspond with the surtacesprebj.' the mesh, said faces being adapted te the mesh, means tor moving said/ mehr .s and the mesh together step by step in one direction, and means for moving the mesrelatively to said members in another dire on, substantiall;7 as set forth.
In a machine for makingr link mesh, a support for'the mesh comprising two members on opposite sides of the mesh, means for niovingsnid members and the meshtogethcr Step by step in one direction, and means for causing the movement ot the mesh with said members to move the mesh in another direction relativ/el)Y to said member", substanl. ln a machine for making link mesh, the. combination of two concentric rotatable members between which the mesh lies, means tor rotating said members and the mesh betneen them. and ine-ans for moving the mesh axially relatively to said members. substan-y tialliV :is sei forth.
'n a. machine for making link mesh, the combination ot two concentric rotatable members between which the mesh lies, saidv members having their adjacent surfaces shaped to correspond with the surfaces prel sented by the mesh, means for rotating said members and the mesh step by step, and meai'is for moving' the mesh axially relatively1 to said members, substantially as setforth,
G. ln a machine for making link mesh, the combination of two concentric rotatable members between which the'mesh lies, said members having their l"adjacent surfaces shaped to correspond with the surfaces presented by the' mesh. means for rotating said members and the mesh step by step, and a member which is stationary with respect to said members and which has a spirally
