' GRILLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented nec. 25, 190e.'
panying` drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side view of a grille embodying my improvements', one of the corners being broken away and certain other portions being broken out to expose parts which would otherwise be hidden from view. Fig,
i 2 is a top plan of the same, but showing the same in anexten'ded osition. Fig. 3 is a fragmental vertical Ilongitudinal section taken in the line 3 3 of Fig. 2. l Fig. 4 is an enlarged cross-section in the line 4 4 of Fig. 2, nd Fig. 5 is a similar section in the line 5 5 of 1g. 1.
It is customary to build grilles of certain standard sizes to fit certain, standard-size door or window openings. When the opening is not of a standard size, vit vis necessary to my intention to provide a grille which is capable of a certain amount of longitudinal adjustment without destroying the unity of the ornamental design. This I accomplish by making the main or side pieces of the grille of a plurality of sectionsl longitudinally adjustab e with respect to each other, the design of the ornamental part being so designed and arranged that considerable movement may be had of each section with respect to the other without distorting the design to any such extent as to be particularly noticeable. Itwill be noticed that a portion of the scrollwork upon the end section extends in beu per and lower portions of the scrollwork ofp the slidable section, so that one may be moved with respect to the other without leaving any wide gaps between them.
. Referring to the drawings, A A represent the two main portions of the grille, and A2 a center piece connecting the two main ortions A A. The portions A A are provi ed, respectively, with pins and sockets a e', adapted to engage with sockets and pins a2 a3 It isY upon the center piece A2. When necessary, this center piece, may be dispensed with and the pins a may then be inserted in the sockets a to connect the two main portions together. This is done when the door-o ening or archway in which the grille is use is too narrowV to receive the three portions of the grille. Each of the main portions AA of the grille'is made up of a stationary or fixed l end section, which is secured to the framework of the archway or opening, and a slidable section A3, guided upon the end section and ad'ustable thereon, so that the length of the grille may be regulated to fit the desired opening.
Each of the end sections is made up of an outer frame comprising longitudinal members a* a5 and a vertical connecting member a, inclosing between them an ornamental scrollwork or other open-work design. Upon the longitudinal members a4 a5 are slidably mounted longitudinal stri s 0.8 a9 of the movable section A3 of the grl le, between which strips is an ornamental scrollwork 0,10, the pattern of which conforms to the lpattern of the scrollwork upon the-stationary end section of the grille. The strip as has secured upon its sides two guide-strips a, between which is slidably secured the longitudinal member ai* of the end sections. The strip as has also secured to it a strip cl2, (see Fig.'3,) which extends into a furcatlon in the longitudinal member 0.4. This strip (L12 is slotted to admit of a screw a, which connects the. ends of the furcation of the member a4. Into the lower edge of the strip a9 are screwed two screws @14, the heads of which extend into undercut grooves a in the lower longitudinal member a5 of the end iece. The slidable sections A2 are thus guided u on the end sections A A.v When the gri le is to be used IOO and I therefore do not intend to limit myself gagement with the slidable portions of the to thespeciiic form hereinshown and described.
I claim as new and desire to secure by Let- 5 ters Patent- The combination in a grille, of tWo end sections each of which comprises tWo slidable parts, Which together form a unitary design and Which are capable of relative movement Io Without substantial distortion of the design,
With a central section having means of enend sections. v.
In Witness whereof I have signed the above application for Letters Patent,at Fostoria, in the county of Seneca and State of Ohio, this 28th day of September, A. D. 1905.
