Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK I. HANNAN, a citizen ofthe United States, residing at Humboldt, in the county of Minnehaha, State of South Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Water-Shoes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others-skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention, which relates to an improvement in water-shoes, has for its object to provide a device of that nature whichv is to be fastened to each foot to permit the wearer to move over the surface of the water as upon ice or snow.
Briefly described, the device consists of a frame similar in shape to a snow-shoe and over and under laid with cork, provision being likewise made upon the under side of the frame of a retarding means to prevent the foremost shoe from moving backward while the rear one is being moved forward.
The invention will be more readily understood from an inspection of the annexed drawings, forming a part of the specication, and in which the same parts are referred to by like numerals in the several views.
In the drawings, Figure l is a top plan view of a water-shoe made in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical section on line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 1s an inverted view of Fig. l.
Referring to the drawings, the shoe will be seen to consist of a wooden frame 5, similar in shape to a snow-shoe and provided on its upper face with a cork layer 7 and upon its under face with a second cork layer 8. The underlaid portion 8, of cork, is provided at its front end with an integral downward extension 9, the rear face l0 of which is approximately at ri ht angles to said underlaid portion 8 and t e front face of which is inclined, as shown at ll in Fig. 2, the said extension tapering in thickness from its forward to its rear end. This extension is provided for the double purpose of presenting a surface which will easily cut the water prow fashion when the shoe is moved forward and at the same time act as an obstruction against the water to prevent any backward slipping of the shoe at the completion of the forward movement of one foot.
The cork layers 7 and 8 may be attached to the frame 5 in any desired manner. The frame 5 of said shoe is provided with a pair of straps 6, these extending through the upper layer 7 of cork, and by means of said straps the shoes are securely fastened to the feet of the wearer. On a forward movement of the shoe the front face 11 of the extension cuts the water prow fashion, as stated, and at the completion of such forward movement the rear face l0 of the extensionwill present an obstruction against which the water bears and prevent any backward movement of the foremost foot while the rear foot is being moved forward.
Modications l and changes may `obviously be made without departing from the scope of the invention, and I therefore do not intend to be limited to the exact construction shown and described.
What is claimed isl. A water shoe comprising a wooden frame 3 layers of cork attached respectively to the upper and lower surfaces of said frame; and downwardly-extending stops connected to said under layer of cork.
2. A water-shoe comprising a snow-shoeshaped frame of wood; a layer of cork attac ed to the upper surface ofsaid frame; and a second layer of cork attached to the under surface of said frame; and a rearwardlyinclined extension upon said under cork layer, the rear face of which is approximately at right angles t0 said second layer.
3. A water-shoe comprising a snow-shoeshaped wooden frame a layer of cork attac ed to the upper surface of said frame and a second layer of cork attached to the lower surface of said frame; said second layer bein provided at its forward end with an inte ra rearwardly-inclined extension, the rear ace of which is approximately at right angles to said second layer.
