WILLIAM L. PAUL, OF PERU, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO PERU PLOW & WHEEL COMPANY, OF PERU, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS.
LANDING-LEVER FOR SULKY-'PLOWS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 18, 1906.
Application filed June 16, 1906. Serial No. 322,043.
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WVILLIAM L. PAUL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Peru, in the county of Lasalle and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Landing-Levers for Sulky- Plows, of which the following is a specification.
Sulky-plows are usually provided with means whereby the plow may be made to take more or less land, and for this purpose the front end of the beam is given a lead, usually by shifting the clevis to which the draft-animals are hitched laterally, so as to cause the plow to run into or out" of the land, as may be desired. The shifting mechanism usually includes a hand-lever with a pawl and ratchet,-and in order to operate this hand-lever the driver must reach the lever, release the latch, and then shift the lever in one direction or the other, meanwhile shifting the reins or holding them in one hand while the adjustment is being made. This operation is laborious and interferes with the guidance of the team, and it is to overcome these objections that my invention is chiefly designed. To this end I have devised a landing-lever mechanism which can be operated by the feet of the driver and by a straightforward thrust in one direction or the other, ac-
cording to the way in which it is desired to shift the draft.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a plan view with parts broken away and others omitted. Fig. 2 is a side elevation partly in longitudinal section. Fig. 3 is a plan view, partly in section, of the beam, ratchet-plate, and foot-lever mechanism. Fig. 4 is a rear elevation of the footlever mechanism, showing the plow-beam in section; and Fig. 5 is a side elevation of a portion of the plow-beam and controlling-link, showing the foot-lever in end elevation.
In the drawings, 6 represents the axle; 7, the beam; 8, the doubletree; 9, the clevis, and 10 the landing-lever, the latter being pivoted on a vertical pivot 11 at the front end of the beam. The landing-lever is of elbow form, and to one of its arms is pivoted a connecting-link 12, the latter being also pivoted at its rear end to a vibrating rocker member 13, pivotally mounted between its ends on a ratchetplate 14, which latter is mounted on the beam 7. The ratchet-plate outwardly of the pivots of the latter. These springs serve to normally hold the foot-levers locked to the ratchet-plate and through the medium of the connecting-link maintain the landing-lever 10 in a set position.
The position of the landing-lever, and consequently the lead of the plow into or out of the land, may be varied by the operator by a forward thrust upon either of the foot-levers. Initially the movement of the foot will unlock or release the foot-lever to which the pressure is applied, and the continued movement will swing the rocker member on its pivot, thus pulling or pushing on the connecting-rod 12 and shifting the landing-lever and line of draft according tothe direction desired. During this movement and while the disengaged pawl is being advanced to a fresh position the pawl at the opposite end is retracting and sliding over the teeth, so that both foot-levers will again be locked to the ratchet-plate at the end of the movement.
In the construction shown in the drawings the Wheel, axle, and beam are mounted in fixed relation to each other; but it is obvious that my improvements might be applied to a sulky-plow, wherein the angular relation of the beam and aXle are varied for the purpose of making the plow take more or less land.
I/Vithout confining my invention to details of construction, I claim 1. The combination with a landing-lever for sulky-plows, of a foot-operated mechanism for controlling said landing-lever and comprising a rocker member, pivoted footlevers and ratchet mechanism, said foot-levers being disposed on opposite sides of the pivot of the rocker member, whereby it may be moved in either direction and a link connecting the rocker member with the landinglever, substantially as described.
2. In a landing mechanism for sulky-plows, the combination with a landing-lever, a ratchet-plate, a rocker member pivoted thereon, and foot-operated levers carried by elbow form pivotally mounted on the front end of the plow-beam, a ratchetlate fixedly connected to the beam, a r00 er member pivotally mounted thereon, a link pivotally connecting one end of the landing-lever With the rocker member, foot-levers pivotally mounted on the rocker member and provided each With a ratchet-tooth, and springs normally holding the foot-levers in engagement with the teeth of the ratchet, substantially as described.
