Description

TE STATES PATENT FFIGE.
COAL COMPOUND.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 11, 1906.
Application filed July 5, 1906. Serial No. 324,797.
To all whom, it ntay concern:
Be it known that I, VVALTER I'IAMMIOK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pittsburg, in the county of Crawford and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Coal Compounds, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to fuel having as a base small particles of coal, such as usually consigned to the waste pile. In accordance with this invention the coal (slack or nut size) is mixed with a binder consisting of a solution of Swedish glue, after which the mixture is molded into the required shape and allowed to set or harden.
To one ton of the fine or refuse coal is added a binder formed by adding six pounds of Swedish glue to about five gallons of water, the binder being thoroughly incorporated with the ooal, so as to moisten the particles and cause adhesion thereof upon the application of sufficient pressure.
It is to be understood that the quantity of water to be added to the glue to form the solution constituting the binder may vary according to the degree of fineness of the coal and the physical properties thereof, the purpose being to dampen the fuel-base so as to cause firm adhesion of the particles, particularly when subjected to compressive force.
To prevent disintegration of the fuel, it is proposed to subject the surface thereof to a coating of crude oil, which protects the fuel from the action of humidity and other cli- 3 5 matic conditions tending to afi'ect the prodthe binder. The coating of crude oil is applied simultaneously with the molding or shaping process and gives a finished appearance to the product, as well as affording protection in the manner stated.
In the marketable form of the fuel it appears as blocks or briquets, and in the commercial manufacture the mixture is forced through a suitable die, and simultaneously with the passage of the material through the die the crude petroleum is supplied to the surface, thereby serving as a lubricant to cause the materal to pass through the die in a continuous piece, which is subdivided to form the blocks or briquets, which are set aside to dry and harden and are then ready for market.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is-- The process of manufacturing artificial fuel which consists in combining small particles of coal with a binder, consisting of a solution of glue, and molding the mixture and simultaneously with the molding operation applying crude oil to the surface of the molded mass to add to its combustibility, to give a finished appearance thereto and protect the same from climatic changes.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature 65 in presence of two witnesses.
