WHISTLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 11, 1906.
Application led May l1l 1906. Serial No. 316.343.
1'); f/,l/ Viff/tono it Y1ra/,ty concern:
Be it known that I, THoMAs HooPs, Jr., a citizen of the United States, residing at Middletown, in the county of Middlesex and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vhistles, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanving drawings.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in whistles, and has for its object, among other things, to provide a manually-actuated whistle that will be sufficiently powerful to produce a loud sound and to accomplish these results by mechanism that will be simple and economical in its construction and easily operated.
To these and other ends my invention consists in the whistle having certain details of construction and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter described, and more particularly pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the drawings, in which like numerals of reference designate like parts in the several figures, Figure 1 is an elevation of my improved whistle complete. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation thereof upon line A B of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a modified form thereof.
In the practice of my invention I provide a cylinder 1, which is closed at one end by a head 2 and at the other end by a head 3, having air ports A therethrough. Operative within said cylinder is a hollow piston-rod 5, having the checknuts 6 and 7 threaded thereon, with a washer 8 therebetween. A suitable handle 9 is secured to the outer end of said piston. The piston 5 is notched at 10, and flxed therein is a disk 1 1, having a notch 12 in one edge thereof.
In operation the device is actuated in the same manner as a hand-pump, and during the downstroke the air passes up through the piston 5 and notch 12 in the disk 11 and escapes through the shell of the piston at 10, producing a shrill loud blast, the length of which is determined by the length of stroke of the piston.
In Fig. 3 a modification of my invention is shown, wherein the piston-handle 13 is hollow, but closed at both ends, with a notch 14 therein similar to the notch 10, above described, and a disk 15 therein corresponding to the disk 11. The operation of this modification is the same except that the sound is now produced by the air passing through the handle 13, disk 15, and notch 14.
There are minor changes and alterations that can be made within my invention aside from those herein suggested, and I would therefore have it understood that I do not limit myself to the exact construction herein shown and described, but claim all that falls fairly within the spirit and scope of my invention.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a device of the character described, the combination with a cylinder, having openings therethrough only at its upper end a valveless piston operative within said cylinder, and open at its lower end; and a sounddisk connected therewith adjacent to an aperture through said piston.
2. In a device of the character described, the combination with a piston open at its lower end; of a cylinder within whichA said piston is operative, having no openings therethrough below the upper limit of the stroke of said piston 5 and a notched disk within said piston adjacent to an aperture therethrough.
3. In a device of the character described, the combination with a hollow piston; of a handle connected with said piston an aperture through the shell of one of the aforesaid members; a notched disk adjacent thereto; and a cylinder closed at its lower end and having no openings therethrough except at its upper end.
4. In a device of the character described, the combination with a cylinder closed at its lower end; of a hollow piston open at its lower end, movable within said cylinder; a washer fixed adjacent to the lower end of said piston and filling said cylinder; and a sound-disk connected with said piston adjacent to an aperture therethrough.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
THOMAS HOOPS, JR.
