UNITED STAWENT OFFICE.
GEORGE L. HAPP AND CHARLES C. HOUOK, OF MOHNSVILLE, PENNSYL- VANIA.
POLE-CARRIER FOR WAGONS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 11, 1906.
Application filed M y 14,1906. Serial No. 316.641.
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that we, GEORGE L. HAPP and CHARLES C. HoUcx, citizens of the United States, residing at Mohnsville, in the county of Berks and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Iniprovements in Pole-Carriers for lVagons, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to pole-carriers for wagons, and it is intended for use on wagons provided with the so-called back set fifthwhcelthat is, one in which the center of the fifthavheel, which is the center on which the frolnt axle turns, is back of the line of said ax e.
The object of the invention is to prevent the pole from rising when it is turned to either side. This rising is caused by the fact that the pole is supported from a point other than the center on which it is turned that is, other than the pivotal center of the fifth-wheel. We overcome this fault by providing a device for supporting the pole whose pivotal center is in direct vertical alinement with the center of the fifth-wheel, and with this device the pole when turned will always retain its horizontal position.
The invention is more fully described in the following specification, and clearly shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of a portion of a wagon with our device in position. Fig. 2 is a partial front view of a portion of a wagon, also showing our device in position. Figs. 3 and 4 show our device in detail.
The numeral 1 designates a wagon-body; 2, the spring-bar; 3, the spring; 4, the headblock; 5, the fifth-wheel; 6, the front axle; 7, the pole, and 8 the perch. These parts are of the usual construction.
The numeral 9 designates our device. This device comprises a flat body portion 9, having a hook 10 at its front end and a depending arm 11 approximately midway of its length. To the lower end of this arm we provide a rod 12, pivoted so as to permit free lateral movement thereon, and this rod is formed with a hook 13 at its free end.
The device is placed over the top of the spring 3 at its center between it and the spring-bar 3, the latter being cut out sufficiently to receive it. This will bring the depending arm 11 in such position that the pivotal point of the rod 12 on its extremity will be in vertical alinement with the pivotal center of the fifth-wheel.
The rear end of the body 9 is provided with an opening 14, to which is secured a springguard, the other end of which may be secured to any desirable point on the perch or rear axle and tends to hold the body from leaning forward on the front spring.
To the hook 13 on the end of the rod 12 may be secured the pole-holding rod 15, which rod is provided with the usual spring 16 and may be secured to any desirable pointon the pole.
With our device in position on a wagon it is evident that when the pole is turned to either side the pole-carrier will turn on the same center as the fifth-wheel, thus removing any strain and overcoming the tendency to rise above its normal position.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A pole-carrier for wagons comprising a flat perforated body, a right-angled hook at its front end, a transverse slot adjacent said hook, a depending curved arm and a rod pivotally secured to the end of said arm, said rod having a hook at its free end, all substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a pole-carrier for wagons comprising a flat body and a depending arm, a hook pivotally secured to said arm, means for secur ing said body to the running-gear and to the pole of a wagon, in combination with a Wagongear, the fifth-wheel of which is in direct vertical alinement with the pivotal point on said arm, all substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof we have signed our names to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
GEORGE L. HAPP. CHARLES C. HOUOK.
