Be it known that I, VICTOR HENRY CAN- HAM, manufacturer, a subject of His Majesty King Edward VII, residing at the city of Guelph, in the county of Wellington and Province of Ontario, Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dressmakers Fitting-Stands, of which the following is a speciiication.
My invention relates to improvements in dressmakers itting-stands, in which the center of the table is rigid and stationary and is surrounded by a wide movable rim edge or border capable of being elevated or depressed for the purpose of testing and leveling the lower hem of ladies and childrens dressskirts 5 and the object of the improvements is to provide a better means of elevating the movable rim edge or border and to operate a correspondingly-adjustable measuring tape and to provide a stad or hand-support for the person whose dress-skirt is being adjusted to steady themselves with while the work is being done. I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure lis a perspective view of my improved dressmakers fitting-stand, showing the supporting-staff and the means for operating the elevating mechanism. Fig. II is a front view of my improved dressmakers itting-stand with the front board removed and the legs in section, showing in elevation the elevating-chains and the windlass-roller on which they are wound. Fig. III is a bottom view of my improved dressmakers fitting-stand, showing a plan of the operatingchains, the windlass-roller, and the arrangement for paying out and winding in the measuring-tape, the legs being shownin cross-section. Fig. IV is a detail view showing in section one of the hollow legs of the stand with the elevating-stem carrying the outer rim edge or border of the stand and to the lower ends of which the elevating-chains are attached. FigV is a detail view showing the compensating spring inserted into the path of the cord for winding in and paying out the measuring-tape.

A is the wide outer rim edge or border of the dressmakers fitting-stand; B, the stationary central platform', C, the frame, and D the legs, while E E E E are the wire-rod stems by which the wide surrounding edge A is raised. This is accomplished by means of chains e e e e, which are attached to their lower ends, as shown in Fig. IV. These chains run over pulleys ff, as shown in Fig. II, one in each corner of the stand and are wound on a windlass-roller F, as shown in Fig. HI. A ratchet-wheel G, Figs. I and HI, is attached to the axle at the front end of the windlass-roller F and is operated by the handle G', while a dog or pawl G locks the same at any desired point. The dog is pivoted onto the frameC and maybe operated by pressing on the free end of the same.
The measuring-tape M is attached to the front of the movable wide rim edge or border A and passes downward through a slot in the frame O, thence under one ofthebraces carrying the central stationary platform to a compensating spring m, to the other end of which a cord n is attached, the cord also passing loosely through the compensating spring m and being attached to the measuring-tape M. From the other end of the spring the cord passes through a block o or round a pulley, and turning at right angles is wound onto the windlass-roller F. y
A staff l?, with head passing freely through a hole in the movable rim A, its into a socket p in the frame, Fig. III, which serves as a hand-rest and support for the person whose dress is being fitted.
As will readily be seen, the chains attached to the lower ends of the wire-rod stems supporting the movable rim edge or border can be wound on the windlass-roller by means of the crank-handle attached to the front end of the same, thus raising the movable surrounding rim of the stand, while by means of the I ratchet-wheel and pawl it can be locked at any desired point, the same action also winding in and paying out the measuring-tape, while the compensating spring attached therleto takes up any slack in the tape or corc.
What I do claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The improvement in dressmakers itting-stands comprising a stationary central platform on a suitable frame surrounded by a wide movable rim edge or border consisting of elevating-stems carrying the said wide rim edge or border, hollow legs bored for the reception of the elevating-stems, chains attached to the lower ends of said elevatingstems, guide-pulleys attached to the frame near the top of the hollow legs for the pur- ICO IIO
pose of guiding said chains, a Windlass-roller and operating-crank running from the front the back of the frame under the central stationary platform, upon Which the chains are Wound, and a ratchet and pavvl for locking the same situated on the front end of the Windlass-roller and the frame respectively as hereinbefore described.
2. The improvement in dressmakers tting-stands comprising a l stationary central platformen a suitable frame, surrounded by a Wide movable rim edge or border; vconsisting lof a measuring-tape attached to the iront edge of the said Wide movable rim edge or border of' the stand, said tape passing down through `a slot in the front `of the frame thence back under the stationary-central platform, a compensating spring introduced into the path of the tape for the purpose of taking up any slack therein, and a small pulleyblock 'for the purpose of changing the direction of the tape so that it can be Wound on the beforementioned Windlass-roller, substantially as hereinbefore described.
3. The improvement in dressmakers iitting-stands comprising a stationary central platform on a suitable frame7 surrounded by a Wide movable rim edge or border; and a vertical staff With suitable cross-head, passing through a hole in the said Wide movable rim edge or border, its lower end being inserted into a suitable socket in the frame underneath, for the vpurpose of forming va handsupport yfor the person using the 4stand `as hereinbefore described.
