Essex and State of Massachusetts, have in-i vented certain vnew and useful Improvements in Lasts, of which the following is a specification.

n This invention relates to a last for making a shoe having an internal elastic heel-cushion ro located above the rigid portion ofthe heel or the shoe insteadof forming the tread portion of the heel.

The particular shoe in the manufacture of whichv my im roved last hereinafter described is ,use has the heel portion of its outer sole offset below the highest part of the shank portion to form the bottom yandfront wall of a cushion-pocket, the said pocket permitting the insertion of an elastic cushion in 2o "the interior of .the shoe above the heel, the upper portion of such cushion being sub.- stantially flush with the highest portion of the shank of the sole. The said cushion is secured in place against forward and upward displacement by-a portion of an inner sole permanently attached to the upper and the outer sole of the shoe, the said inner sole having a two-part heel portion, one part of which conforms to the offset heel portion of the outer sole, and is permanently attached thereto, forming the bottom of the cushionpocket, while the other art is flexibly connected with the body ci) the inner sole and forms adisplaceable cover for the cushion inserted in said pocket., the cover being movable, so that it may be raised to permit the insertion or removal 'of the cushion.Y When 'the said cover is in place, it 'conceals the cushion and serves to prevent forward and 4o upward displacement of the same.

The object of the present invention is to enable a shoe havingthe described internal cushion-pocket to bemade on a last, the body portion of which lis of theordinary form and is devoid of an offsetheel-seat, so that the last` may be usedfor making ashoe which is not provided with the said internal cushion-pocket.

The improved last in which the present invention is embod-'ed comprises a body por- -tion of ordinary form, and a removable heelseat extension, one side of which is adapted to bear on the ordinary heel-seat of a last, while its opposite side is adapted to form the offset-bottom of the said heel-pocket. The

said extension is adapted to be inserted between the two divisions ofthe heel portion of Ithe inner sole, and temporarily secured to the last., with the upper division of the inner sole interposed between it and the usual heel-seat of the last, the lowerfdivision ofthe inner sole bearing upon the oiiset bottom portion of the extension during the lasting and -bottomin operations. The heel-seat extension ena les the outer sole and the lower division of the heel portion ofthe inner sole to be permanently connected to each other and to the heel, the upper division of the inner solebeing left free from or unattached to the heel portion of the inner sole, so that the said upper division of the inner sole may be raised to permit the insertion of the heel-cushion.

Of the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 represents a sectional elevation of a last embodying my invention, the said last having an inner sole applied to it. The member 1.7 then turned down upon theeushion, forminK4 a @over therefor and a stop to prevent forward `and upward displacement o' the cushion. lt will be seen that the extension 13 is adapted to form a part of the last during the lasting and bottoming operations and enables the inner member 17 of the inner sole to be kept separate from the outer member 18 during the said operations.

Means are preferably employed for engaging the extension 13 with the body ofthe last in such manner as to prevent accidental edgewise displacement of the extension d u1'- ing the lasting operation. T he preferred means for this purpose comprises a flange 22 on the extension 13, the outer side of the flange being flush with vthe edge of the extension and fitting a recess or seat 23, formed i vfor its engagement on the body of the last. i The extension 13 and the body of the last are thus interlocked, se that the extension cannot swing or slip in any direction upon the last. The fastening device 30, 'which is v driven into an orifice in the extension 13 prevents the extension 1.3 from moving side- Wise away from the heel'- seat or bottom of the bodvV of the last.

In Fig. 4 l show modified form of the flange 422, the said flange being beveled to athin edge and fitting a correspondingly-bev eledface or seat on the body of the last.
