Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whont it may concern.-
Be it known that I, AoHILLEs ALLEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Milton, in the county of Umatilla and State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Soldering- Clamps; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in adjustable soldering-clamps in which gutters, eaves-troughs, and the like of irregular shape may be soldered or otherwise formed or made.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple and efficient device of this character in which gutters or eaves-troughs for circular or irregular shaped porches, roofs, and the like may be quickly soldered as readily as straight gutters or troughs.
IVith the above and other objects in view the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a top plan view of a portion of a soldering clamp constructed in accordance with my invention, a gutter or eaves-trough being mounted within the same. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the parts shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view of the same, and Figs. 4 and 5 are vertical transverse sectional views taken on the planes indicated by the lines 4 4 and 5 5 in Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawings by characters, 1 denotes my improved solderingclamp,which may be of any desired length and of any size and shape in cross-section. In the drawings I show but three sections of the solderingclamp, but it will be understood that there may be any number of these connected sections according to the use to which the soldering-clamp is to be put. The solderingclamp is preferably constructed of a single piece or one or more suitablyconnected pieces of sheet metal, which is bent in channel form so as to provide a bottom 2 and inner and outer sider 3 and 4. The solderingclamp is thus shaped to receive the sections of the gutter or eaves-trough T which are to be united within the same, and the outer side 4 of the soldering-clamp has its upper edge outturned to form a horizontally-projecting flange 5, on which is adapted to rest the usual downturned outer edge t of the trough. The soldering-clamp is divided at suitable intervals into sections 6 by cutting or severing its bottom and outer side wall along transverse lines 7, so that said sections may be bent angularly with respect to each other. The connectin portions of the inner side wall 3 serve as inges to connect the sections 6 and permit them to assume angular positions with res ect to each other.
As previous y stated, the sections 6 may be of any desired length, so that the solderingclamp maybe bent to fit any circular, curved, or irregular-shaped porch, roof, or the like.
In order to secure the sections 6 in adjusted positions with respect to each other, I provide upon the outer faces of their outer side walls 4 overlapping angle metal brackets 8 9, which are adapted to be adjustably secured together by means of bolts or set-screws 10. The bracket 8 is riveted or otherwise secured to one end of one of the sections and is formed with an opening to receive one of the bolts 10, and the other bracket 9 is similarly secured upon the adjoining end of the adjacent section and is formed with an elongated slot 11, through which said bolt also extends. The bolts 10 have flat heads which permit them to be readily turned into and out of nuts 12, s clearly shown in Fig. 4 of the drawings. By providing this form of connection between each of the sections 6 it will be seen that they may be quickly secured in their adjusted positions after being fitted around the porch or roof to which the gutter or eaves-troughT is to be applied.
In order to retain the sections of the trough T in the soldering-clamp or forming device while they are being soldered or otherwise united, I preferably provide along the inner side wall 3, at its upper edge, overhanging hooks 15, beneath which the inneredges of the trough-sections are adapted to fit. As shown, these hooks are in the form of bent plates riveted or otherwise secured, as at 16, upon said side wall, as clearly seen in Fig. 5 of the drawings. I also provide upon the outer side wall 4 spring-catches 17, which are adapted to engage the upper edge of the rim or bead t on the trough T. These catches 17 consist of jaws or lips 18, secured upon rods 19, mounted to slide in tubular guides 20, provided in angle-brackets 21, riveted or otherwise secured upon the side wall 4 beneath the flange 5 of the latter. The rods 19 1 be quickly are both slidably and rotatably mounted in the guides and are retained therein by coiled springs 22, which surround them and are confined between the upper ends of said guides and stops provided upon the lower ends of the rods, as clearly shown in Fig. 5 of the drawings. It will be seen that when the knobs or finger-pieces upon the upper ends of the rods 19 are grasped to elevate the jaws 18 the latter may be turned or swung outwardly out of engagement with the bead or rim t of the trough, so that the latter may removed from or applied to the soldering-clamp.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction, operation, and advantages of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation. I
Various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention as defined by the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. An adjustable soldering-clamp of the class described comprising sections connected together on-one side for angular adjustment and providedon the other side with means to permit such angular adjustment, and means to secure said sections when so adjusted.

A soldering-clamp of the character described comprising a channel-body consisting of a series of sections connected along one side, apertured angle-brackets secured upon said sections, bolts for adjustably securing said brackets together, hooks upon one side of said body, and spring-catches upon the other side of said body, substantially as described and for the purpose set forth.
