Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed January 30, 1906. Serial 1510.298377- To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARGARET GRAAF, a citizen of the United States, residing at Estherville, in the county of Emmet and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sewing-Machine Cabinets, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to sewing-machine cabinets; and it has for an object to provide a work-box readily attachable to new and to old machines, constructed in such a manner as to be inexpensive and as to occupy a minimum amount of space, in the cabinet and so positioned as to be readily accessible.
Other and further objects will appear in the following description and will be more particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a top plan view of a sewing-cabinet employing my invention. Fig. 2 is a front elevation with the work-box in section. Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the end of the cabinet at which the work-box is located, the work-box being 'open and Fig. 4 is a section on line 4 4, Fig. 2.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 indicates a sewing-cabinet of the drop type, and 2 the swinging closure of the same. In this type of cabinet the closure 2 does not extend over the row of drawers at the right-hand side, and the drawers are supported from the top 3 by means of loops or hangers 4 and separated by a ring 5, the sides of the drawers being polished and exposed. In my invention a rectangular opening is cut in the top 3 directly over the top drawer 6, and a rectangular receptacle 7 of the same size of the opening is let into said opening and secured with its upper edge flush with the upper surface of the top 3, its side walls snugly fitting the inner faces of the side walls of the drawer 6. A closure 8, having a length equal to the width of the closure 2 of the machine, is hinged at 9 to the upper face of the top 3 and is adapted to form a leaf to the cabinet when extended, as shown in Fig. 3. The upper surface of the closure 8 is in p the same plane as the upper surface of the closure 2, and its free edge is beveled to con form to the beveled edge of the closure 2, so that an unbroken surface is provided by the two closures.
The receptacle contains a pincushion 10 at one end and a number of vertical spindles 1 1, adapted to support thread-cotton spools 12, While the inner face of the closure carries loop 13 to support scissors 14.
To permit the sliding movement of the upper drawer 6, the upper portion of its rear end is cut away at 15 sufliciently to permit the end to pass beneath the depending portion of the work box.
A work-box positioned in the manner described makes it possible for the user of the sewing-machine to have near at hand the most-needed articles without the use of an independent receptacle, which would have to rest upon the cabinet and would be in the way while sewing. The closure of the box also forms an extension-leaf for the cabinet.
It will be seen that the device can be manufactured independently of the machine and installed on old machines with very little trouble, requiring only the cutting of the opening in the top, the hinging of the closure, and the cutting of the rear wall of the top drawer.

In a sewing-machine table, a top having an opening therein, a drawer having bottom and side walls movably mounted on said table beneath said top and opening, a receptacle or box supported by and depending from said top beneath said opening and extending down Within the upper part of said drawer, a portion of the side wall of said drawer being cut away so that when the same is moved out for use it will clear the receptacle.
