Description

Letters Patent No. 83,723, dated; November 3, 1,868.
IBIPBOVENIIENT IN MACHINE F03 BURRING- W'OGL.
l The Schedule :referred to in these Lettere Patent and making part ef the same.
To all whom it 'may concern Be it known that. I, JOHN NICHOLS, of Paterson, in the county of Passaic, and State or" New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Burring- Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure l represents a vertical longitudinal section vof my improved burning-machine, taken on the plane of the line x x, iig. 2.
Figure 2 is a vertical transverse section of the same, taken on the line y y, iig. l.
Figure 3 is a detail side view ofthe toothed retaining-strip.
Figure L is a transverse section thereotl/ Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
The object of this invention is to construct a machine for burring wool, which will not tear nor injure the wool, and which will operate with great rapidity and eectiveness. y
The invention consists in the combination oi' the drum, having a toothed triangular band wound around it, the notched blade ior removing the bnrrs from the drum, the revolving brush, and the reel.
A, in the drawing, represents a wooden or other frame, of suitable size and shape, holding the journals of three horizontal transverse shafts, B, C, and D.
4 On the shaft Bis mounted a drum, E, of suitable diameter and length.
This drum is provided with a toothed groovedsurface, by having a narrow toothed metal band, F, wound spirally around it. This band is of triangular crosssection, as in fig. 4, and when it is wound around the drum, its various layers touch each other at their base, while they are clear'ifrom each other on their outer edges.` A spiral groove is thus' formed between the windings of the toothed spiral band, to receive the wool.
The roller C carries a reel cr striking-bars, G, and
Y on the roller D is mounted a cylindrical brush, H, as
shown.
I is a blade set up in front of the drum E, quite close to the saine, and between the drum and the reel G.
The upper edge of the blade I is fingered, or, rather, notched, and is'very close to the toothed rim of the drum. The object of having these notches is to pre vent the burrs from being balanced on the edge of the blade I, and from being thereby squeezed down between the blade and the drum.
The brush is under the blade I, and is in contact with the rim of the drum. It is encased all around, excepting the space between the blade I and the drum, and excepting also a discharge-opening, e, for the wool.
The operation is as follows:
The drum, by means of its teeth, takes the wool from a suitable feeding-apparatus, and deposits it in narrow strips in its grooves, so as to protect the said wool from injury. The burrs, of course, project, and are, by the bladeil, separated from the drum. All the rollers revolve in 'the directions indicated by the arrows in fig. l. The buns that have been taken ofi the drum by the blade are struck by the reel, and separated from the woolly iibres to which they may have adhered. They then fall upon a table, J, and are thence discharged into a suitable receptacle.
The wool is thus cleared from the burrs, and is then taken oii" the drum by the brush H, by which it is thrown through the discharge-opening a, ot' its case K, into a suitable receptacle.
The baud F is to Arest firmly on the surface otl the drum, and is provided with a concave lower sinface, as in iig. 4, so that it will not be able to swing on inequalities projecting from its middle.
Y The rollers receive their rotaryniotion from suitable mechanism.
The band F is arranged in close windings, and its ends are both fastened to the drum in suitable manner. The band F, instead of being wound spirally around the drum E, may be tted around the same in rings, that form separate grooves between them.
Having thus described my invention,
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A burringmachine, consisting ofthe combination with each other of the drum E,haying the toothed triangular band F, of the vnotched blade I, .rotating reel G, and brush H, all' made and operating substantially as herein shown and described.
JOHN NICHOLS.
