TRACE CARRIER. APPLICATION FILED APRA. 1906.

TRACE-CARRIER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 27, 1906.
Application filed April 4, 1906- Serial No. 309.838-
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY II. WACHTER, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Melrose, in the county of Jackson and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trace- Carriers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.
The object of this invention is to provide a cheap and simple device by the use of which a trace may be raised and held against dropping after it has been detached from the whiflietree. This object is attained by the use of the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings and the invention consists in certain novel features which will be hereinafter first fully described and then particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings which have just been mentioned and which illustrate the preferred embodiment of the invention, Figure 1 is an elevation of the device inposition on a harness. Fig. 2 is a vertical section on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a vertical sec tion on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2.
The trace 1 is of the usual or any preferred construction and is provided with the usual cockeye 2 at its rear end for engagement with the whiffietree-hook. Somewhat in advance of its rear end the trace is connected with the lower end of a strap 3 in any desired manner, the connection shown consisting of an eye or loop 4, which is engaged by the lower end of the strap. This strap 3 passes up to a holder 5, which is secured to and carried by the breeching-straps, and consists of an open frame having a curved lower cross-bar 6, which receives the strap 7, and having a loop or cross-bar 8 at its upper end, to which the end of the hip-strap 9 is secured. The side bars of the holder are enlarged laterally, as shown at 10, and are made hollow, so as to provide recesses 11,in which are seated coiled springs 12, the upper ends of the said springs bearing against a pin or axle 13, which plays in and passes through vertical slots 14 in the inner walls of the enlarged sides of the holder. A roller 15 is mounted on the pin or axle 13 between the sides of the holder, and the upper end of the strap 3 passes over the said roller, the arrangement being such that the roller is normally held up by the springs so as to clamp the strap between the roller and a cross-bar 16 of the holder.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the operation and advantages of the device will be readily understood. The upper portion of the suspendin -strap 3 passes over the roller and its end depends in rear of the roller. When the trace is disconnected from the whiffletree, the end of the suspending-strap is drawn downward, so that the outer portion of the said strap will be raised and hold the end of the trace off the ground. As soon as the manual pull on the suspending-strap is Withdrawn the said strap will be clamped firmly by the roller. Should it be desired to again connect the trace to the whiffletree, a slight downward pull on the outer portion of the suspending-strap will permit the lowering of the trace.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination of the breechin a holder secured thereto. and having a yielding clamping member, and a suspending-strap secured to the trace and passing up to the holder and over the yielding clamping member thereof and having its free end depending therefrom.
2. The combination of a suspendin 'strap attached to the trace, a holder having ollow side bars and a cross-bar between said side bars, springs seated in said side bars, a pin resting on said springs and passing through the side bars, and a roller mounted on said pin and arranged to clamp the suspendingstrap against the cross-bar.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two attesting witnesses.
