Be it known that I, CLEM SHAEFER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Harmony, in the county of Clay and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vehicle-Wheel Hubs; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to vehiclewheels, and has-for its object the production of an improved hub, a feature of which is a novel means for rendering it dust-proof and for preventing the escape therefrom of the lubricant.
The invention in all of its features will be readily comprehended, reference being had to the following detailed description and to the accompanying drawings, illustrating the wheel-hub in its preferred form of embodiment, it being understood that various modiiications may be made therein without exceeding the scope of the concluding claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a wheel-hub embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same. Referring to the drawings by numerals, 1 designates the axle, having the tapered end portion 2, equipped along its upper surface with a lubricant-groove 3 and having intermediately an enlarged cylindrical portion or liange 4 and an adjoining exteriorly-threaded portion 5. The hub comprises two outer metallic sleeves 6 7 and an inner, preferably wooden, sleeve or filling 8. The wheel-spokes 9 at their innerends enter radially-disposed sockets in the sleeve 8 and are confined toward said ends between flanges 10 11, respectively provided on the outer sleeves 6 7, bolts or rivets 12 passing through the sleeveflanges and spokes serving to iirmly secure these parts together. The sleeve 6 has an imperforate or closed outer end 13, rendering the hub at this point both dust and lubricant proof, and the companion sleeve 7 at its outer end portion is provided with exterior threads 14.
The skein 15, which surrounds the tapered end of the axle, has a closed outer end 16, preventing the entrance of dust and the escape of the lubricant, and at its inner end is provided with a rearwardly-projecting annular tongue 17 concentric with the axis. The skein has a tapered bore conforming to the axle end 2 and is preferably exteriorly tapered, as shown. The skein is of polygonal form in cross-section and enters the correspondingly-shaped bore of the hub-sleeve 8, or said bore may be of circular form and may receive the polygonal skein by driving the latter. v
18 designates a cap having a circular opening 19, receiving the enlarged cylindrical portion or flange 4 of the axle. The cap is interiorly threaded for engagement with the hubthreads 14, and 20 is a ring-nut engaging the threads 14 and adapted to be tightened against the cap after the manner of a jamnut. The cap is provided around the o ening 19 with a flange 21, and projecting fprom the inner edge of said flange is an annular tongue 22.
The hub is held against end movement by a nut 23, engaging the threaded portion 5 of the axle and tightened against the iiange 4. Said nut is interposed between the inner ends of the skein and cap, adjustment of the parts for free rotation being accomplished by setting the cap, as will be understood. The opening 19 in the cap closely receives the flange 4, whereby entrance of dust and escape of lubricant is partly prevented. To render the construction dust and lubricant proof, I employ the tongues 17 and 22, above described, which respectively enter annular grooves 24 25 in the opposite faces of the nut 23, providing circuitous paths for the lubricant, and thereby eifectually preventing lubricant leakage and the entrance of foreign substances to the bearingsurfaces- I claim- 1. The combination of a hub havingv a closed outer end and a threaded inner end, a threaded cap secured to the inner end of the hub, a skein carried by the hub, an axle, and a nut on the axle having annular tongue-andgroove engagement with the skein and cap.
