' UNITED STATES GEORGE WESSELL, OF
PATENT OFFICE.
BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 20, 1 906.
Application filed December 26,1905. Serial No. 293,206.
T0 and whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE WESSELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Voice Attachments for Artificial Animals, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to artificial animals used in connection with merry-go-rounds,
carousels, or other and similar amusement apparatus as seats or supports for riders; and the object of the invention is to provide an animal of this class with a voice-producing attachment which is adapted to be operated by a person sitting on the back of the animal.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following spec fication, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters, said drawing being a sectional side view of an artificial horse used in connection with a merrygo-round, carousel, or similar amusement apparatus and provided with my improved voice-producing attachment or device.
In the drawing forming part of this specification, I have shown at a an artificial horse of the kind or class usually employed in connection with merry-go-rounds, carousels, or similar amusement apparatus as seats or supports for riders, and in the practice of my invention as shown in the drawing I provide a voice-producing attachment which consists of a casing I), sunk into the front breast portion of the horse, said front breast portion of the horse being provided with a chamber 0, in which the casing b is placed, and the outer end of which is closed by a plug (1, which conceals the chamber and the casing I). Communicating with the chamber 0 is a bore or passage e, which extends upwardly and backwardly from said chamber and terminates in the form of construction shown directly over the shoulders of the horse or forwardly of the saddle f or of that part of the back of the horse on which a rider would sit.
The inner end of the casing b is provided I with a slot or opening 6 provided with a reed b and within the casing b is placed a plunger b provided with a rod b which passes out through the inner end of the casing b and through the passage 6 and is provided with a handle I), and between the plunger b and the inner end of the casing b is placed a spiral spring 6 It will be understood, of course, that the character of the sound produced by this device will be regulated to correspond with the voice of the animal represented as nearly as possible, and in practice a party sitting on the horse, either on the saddle or on the back of the horse, by grasping the handle 6 and pulling the rod b outwardly can produce the desired sound or voice, and this operation may be continued or repeated as often as desired, the rod 1) being forced inwardly at each operation by the spring 6 My invention is in no way limited to the details of the voice-producing device employed, and any suitable device of this kind may be used, all that is necessary being to conceal the device in the body or parts of the animal and to provide means whereby the said device may be conveniently operated by a party or person sitting-on the animal.
Although I have shown my improvement applied to an artificial horse, it will be apparent that the same may be applied to other artificial animals, such as lions, tigers, camels, giraffes, and other animals which are usually employed in merry-go-rounds, carousels, and similar amusement apparatus to form seats or supports for riders.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Let ters Patent, is
An artificial animal of the class used in connection with merrygorounds, carousels and similar amusement apparatus, said animal being provided forwardly of the shoulders with a voice-producing apparatus which consists of a chamber formed in the front breast portion of the animal, a casing placed in said chamber, a bore or passage extending upwardly from said chamber and opening in front of the shoulders of the animal, the inner end of said casing being provided with a slot or opening having a reed, and a spring-operated plunger placed in said casing and pro- I ence of the subscribing witnesses, this 23d day vided with a rod which passes out through of December, 1905.
the inner end of said casin and through said i bore or passage, substantially as shown and GEORGE WESSELL' 5 described. Witnesses:
- In testimony that I claim the foregoing as I C. J. KLEIN;
my invention I have signed my name, in pres- F. A. STEWART.
