Description

PATENTED NOV. 20, 1906.
J. R. MOI'FATT. GUIDING DEVICE FOR SEWING MAUI-II NBS.
BAND 0R TAPE APPLICATION FILED APR. 7, 1904.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE. JAMES R. MOFFATT, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO UNION SPECIAL SEWING MACHINE COMPANY, OF CHIOAGO,1LLINOIS, A CORPORATIONOF ILLINOIS.
BAND OR TAPE- GU IDING DEVICE FOR SEWING-MACHINES- Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed April 7, 1904. Serial No. 202,046.
Patented Nov. 20, 1906.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMEs R. MOFFATT, a citizen of the United States, residin at Chicago, in the county of Cook, State Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Band or Tape Guiding Devices forSewing-Machines', of which the following is a description, reference'being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
My invention relates to an implrovement'indevices for guiding tape or ot er strips or bands'to be sewed to a body material to the stitch-forming mechanism of the machine, the
object being to provide an adjustable guide therefor which canbe adjusted for various widths of tapes, bands, or strips or which can be set to pro erly guide those tapes, bands, or strips whic are made of such material as to be narrowed up materially under the strain placed upon them when being fed into the machine.
The invention is herein shown as embodied in a tape-guiding presser-foot; but it will be understood that I do not wish to be thus limited, as the features forming the subject-matter of the invention may be applied to guides attached to the throat-plate, bed-plate, or any other suitable supporting part in the sewing-machine.
The invention consists in the matters hereinafter described, and referred to in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings, which illus trate the invention, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a resser-foot embodying my lnvention, showing the parts in one position. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the parts in a different position. Fig. 3 is a detail view showing the parts all detached.
In the drawings, A represents the presserfoot, having the usual needle-openings a and having the inclined upwardly-projecting toepiece a, which is rovided with the projectin stud b, interna ly screw-threaded.
and 0 represent the two side pieces of the tape-guide, which embraces the sides of the toe-piece a and having interlapping horizontal portions 0 d, which are guided by the rojection in top of the toeiece, one of the horizontal portions 0 being slbtted to engage said rojection, and as the parts a and d interlap t ey will be guided by the projection as they are adjusted toward and from each other. One of the side pieces B has also secured to'it apin e, which passes through an opening in the other side piece C. This pin forms a guide for the tape in passing from the reel to the tape-guide and is of length sufvficient to project beyond the guiding edge 0 to'form a bearing when the side pieces are adjusted to their extreme position. Athumblever E is pivoted on the screw f, which screw passes into the threaded stud b and holds the parts together, awasher 9 being provided. Said lever E has oppositely-extending slots F, engaging pins h on the'parts B C, so that by swinging the lever the side pieces B and C will be adjusted toward and from each other.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A uiding device for tape, bands or like materia having a support, a projection on said support, guides for the sides of said material, and interlapping plates carried by said guides and embracing said projection, means or holding the plates from vertical movement and means for simultaneously adjusting said guides laterally.
2. A guidin device for tape, bands .or other material aving a sup ort, a projection thereon, side guides for t e ta e or other material, having interlapping ongitudinal plates embracing said projection, a screw engaging said projection and holding the lates in lace and means for simultaneous adjustin the plates laterally; substantially as descri ed.
3. A guiding device for tape, bands or other like material having a support, a pro jection thereon, side guides for the tape or other material having interlapping longitudinal plates embracing said projection, a screw engaging said projection and holding the plates 1n place and a lever pivoted on said screw and having parallel slots en aging pins or projections on the plates; su stantially as described.
4. A guiding device for tape, bands or other like material having a support, a projection thereon, side guidesfor the tape or other material having interlapping longitudinal plates embracing said pro ection, a screw engaging said projection and holding the plates in place and means for adjusting the plates, and a guiding-pin for the tape, extending between the side guides, engaging one, and passing through the other; substantially as described.
5. A tape or strip guiding resser-foot having the extending toe portion with guidingflanges for the material, interlapping longitul dinal plates supported on said extendin toe portion, means for holding said plates ro m vertical 1novement,---a' guiding-pin for the tape extending between the side guides en- JAMES R. MOFFATT.
