new and useful Improvements in Brick- Clamps, of which the following is aspecitication, reference being had therein to the accom )any-ing drawings.

T 's invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in brick-clamps; and the invention has for its primary object the provision of novel means whereby a clamp may be adjusted to grip a variable number of bricks.

Another object of this invention is the provision of novel means in connection with a brick-clamp whereby various kinds of bricks may be readily gripped and easily carried.

A further object of this invention is to provide an adjustable brick-clamp which will be extremely simple in construction, strong and durable, comparatively inexpensive to manufacture, and easy to manipulate.

` Vith the above and other objects in View the invention consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed; and referring to the drawings accompanying this application like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved clamp, showing the same engaging aplurality of bricks. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of one of the adjustable members of the clamp. Fig. 3 is a similar viewof another adjustable member of the clamp. Eig. 4 is a perspective view of a gripping-le ver, and Fig. 5 is a detail elevation of a screw and washer usedin connection with the clamp.

To put my invention into practice, I employ two

members

1 and 2, which are adjustably connectedy together, as will be presently described. The member 1 consists of a bar of steel or iron having a biiurcated end 3, which is pierced, as at 4 4, to permit of a gripping-lever 5 being pivotally mounted in the bifurcated end 3 on a pin 6. The gripping-lever consists of a shank 7, having a depending end 8, which is adapted to engage one end of a row of bricks 9, to be carried by the clamp. The member 1 has its bottom edge provided with a plurality of angularlydisposed slots or recesses 9a, while its one end is provided with transverse openings 9b and 9C. The member 2 consists ,ot-a bar of steel or iron, having a depending end 10,

which is'adapted toengage the opposite end of the row of bricks 9'. The member 2 1s pro# vided ywith a longitudinally-disposed slot 11 and with a transverse opening 12. l

To`connect the members'll and 2 of the clamp together, the screw-threaded opening 12 oi the member 2 is providedwi-th api-n' or screw-bolt 14,v which is adapted to engagel in'one of the'angularly-disposed slots 9a of the memfbem'l. To retainlthe pinor bolt within one of the slots of the member 1, the

opening "90 of said member is provided with a set-screw or bolt 15, which is passed through the slot 11 of the member 2 to engage 'in the opening 9c of the member 1. The washer 16 is mountedupon the set-screw'or bolt,.where f' by the winged'head 17 of the bolt may engage the washer and clamp the member 2 in engagement with the member 1.

1 and 2 are shown in the accompanying drawings permits of a row of ordinary bricks being gripped, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, and carried by the lever 5. As various kinds and sizes of bricks are manufactured, I have adjustably connected the

members

1 and 2 together, whereby the clamp mav be adjusted to grip smaller or larger bricks, such as colonial bricks, which are Hat and narrow. When bricks of a less width than those shown are to be gripped, the set-screw or bolt 15 is loosened, so as to permit ofthe member 1 being adjusted longitudinally and relatively to the member 2, and the screw-bolt 14 is removed from the slot in the member 1, in which it has been seated, and placed in another oi the slots 9a in the same member. The bolt 15 and the screw-bolt 14 are then tightened up, so as to secure the

members

1 and 2 in their new position, the adjustment being made so as to lengthen or shorten the clamp, according to the number and widths of bricks to be carried by the clamp.

My invention resides in the novel means above described for adjustably connecting the two members of the clamp together. By the construction of my improved clamp it is possible to carry from three to ifteen or more bricks, according to the length of the

members

1 and 2; and I desire it to be understood that the clamp may be made of various sizes and of any desired material.

tional bolt similar to the bolt 157 When by reason of the clamp being extended to near the limit of its length the strain on a single bolt might prove too much.

By the construction of the two members of the clamp it will be observed that these members can be easily and quickly adjusted, whereby a variable number of bricks can be quickly clamped.

l am aware of adjustable clamps that have been used before, and the adjusting feature in connection With these clamps requires considerable time and manipulation, Where in my improved clamp the same can be easily and quickly accomplished.

Such changes in the construction and operation of my improved clamp as are permissible by the appended claims may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.

What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

l. A brick-clamp, embodying tWo memin the first-named member and one of the slots in the other member.

2. A brick-clamp embodying two members one of which has a depending end and a lever having a depending end, said lever being pivotally attached to the other of said members, one of said members being provided with a longitudinally-disposed slot and the other of said members vbeing provided with a plurality of slots, and bolts passing through both members and securing the same together.
