' Toall whom it may concern:

Be it known that-I, WILLIAM J STEVEN- soN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Tuscola, in the county of Douglas and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Scoop-Boards, of which thefollowing is a specification.

The object of my lnventlon is to provide an improved scoop-board for wagons embodying novel features of construction and arrangements of parts whereby the scoopboard is capable of being attached to any wagon-body now in use and embodying also novel locking means for holding the scoopboard in closed position and for also holding it in lowered osition, where it forms an extension of the ottom of the wagon-box.

' For a full description of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction of the means for effecting the result reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a portion of a wagon box or body, showing my invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view with the scoop-board in the lowered position. Fig. 3 is a detail view of one of the bars to which the scoop-board is designed to be hinged and secured. Fig. 4 is a detail horizontal section through one side of the wagon-body.

Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.

Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates a wagon box or body to which my im roved scoop-board is designed to be detac ably secured.

2 designates channeled or grooved. posts which constitute the supports for the scoopboard proper, and each of these posts is located against the rear edge of the sides of the wagon-body, with their grooves 3 facing inwardly so as to cover the box-rod nuts and washers. The posts 2 are preferably detachably connected to the Wagon-body by means of bolts 4, which are inserted therethrough and through the usual holes 5 for the end-gate rods. l

Secured to the rear edge of each of the posts or supports 2 is a vertically-extending ar 6, whic is preferably of metal and may form either an integral part of the post or be an independent strip secured thereto by fastenings-7, as shown. Each bar 6 is referably buckled intermediate its ends to orm a rearwardly-projecting keeper 8, provided with an aperture .9, and at its lower end each bar 6 is returned or bent outwardly and upwardly to form a socket 10, constituting one member of a hinge. The scoop-board 11 is provided on each side edge wlth wings 12, designed to extend outside of the support 2 when the scoo -board is in closed osition, and the scoopoard is also provided at each lower corner with a cut-away portion or recess 13, into which a intle 14 rojects, the two said pintles being esigned or reception in the sockets 10, whereby to detachably hinge the scoop-board to the supportingposts 2. The scoop-board is provi ed with openings 15, which are so located as to register with the upwardly-projecting lugs or keepers 8 of the bars 6, so that when the scoop-board is in a vertical closed osition with res ect to the wagon-box 1 the eepers will prO ect through the said'openings to the outer side of the scoop-board.

16 designates latch-rods, which are mounted to slide through the apertures in the keepers 8 and to lie against the outer surface of the scoop-board to hold the scoop-board locked in closed position. Preferably to hold the latch-rods secured in their locked position the scoop-board is provided with angular latch-bolts 18,-in which the lower ends of the latch-rods may be sprung, as shown. Each latch-rod is provided at one end with a hook 19 and at its other end with an abutment orenlargement 20, which in the resent instance is formed by bending the l dtch-rod into loop form, as shown.

In the practical operation of the device the supports or posts 2 are detachably secured to the rear edges of the sides of the wagon box or body. As before described, the scoop-board is detachably hinged in the socket of the bars 6, so that it may be swung into a vertical closed position against the IOO wagon-box or let down therefrom to form 3. 1'

continuation or extension of the bottom of the wagon-box. When the scoop-board is let down, the latch-rods are engaged at their hooked ends on the keepers of the bars 6, and they slide freely through the opening in the scoop-board until the latter brings up against the enlargement or abutment at the free ends of the latch-rods, in which position the scoop-board will be sustained against downward displacement by the said rods. It will thus be seen that the latch-rods perform two functionsnamely, the function of locking the scoop-board in closed position and the further function of sustaining the scoopboard in proper lowered position.

611 not in use, the scoop-board may be readily detached from its supporting position, and the latter may, as is manifest, be detached from the wagon-body, so that the ordinary end-gate may be substituted therefor, if desired.

From the foregoing description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, it-is evident that I have provided a scoop-board which may be fitted to any of the wagonbodies now in use without any change in the same and which is simple in construction and efficient in operation in both closed and open or lowered position.

It is to be understood that the bars 6 may be secured directly to the wagon-box 1 instead of the posts or supports 2 in any de sired manner, either by the end-gate rods themselves, by the bolts passing through the ordinary openings for the end-gate rods, or by the elongated slot and screw or pin connection illustrated in the accompanying drawings. The slots for the fastening 7 are preferably elongated in any event, so that the bars 6 may be adjusted vertically, so that the bottom of the scoop-board may be raised or lowered sufiiciently to register properly with the bottom of the wagon-box.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is 1. A device of the character described,

comprising posts arranged for detachable connection to a wagon-body and provided with grooved faces designed to cover the ordinary box-rod ends and washers, fastenings secured to said posts and secured in the endgate rod-holes of the wagon-box, and a scoop-board hinged to said posts.

2. A device of the character described comprising supporting-posts provided with rearwardly-extending keepers and sockets forming one member ofa hinge, a scoopboard provided with pintles designed to be detachably received in said sockets, and a latch-rod slidably mounted in said keepers and designed for engagement with the rear face of said scoop-board to lock the same in closed position.

3. A device of the character described comprising supporting-posts, a scoop-board hinged to said posts and provided with an opening, an apertured keeper extending rearwardly from one of said posts in registry with said opening and designed to extend therethrough when the scoop-board is in closed position, and a latch-rod having sliding enga ement with said keeper and provided with means at one end for engagement with said keeper and means at the other end for engagement with the scoop-board as and for the purpose set forth.

4. A device of the character described comprising supporting-posts, a scoop-board hinged to said posts and provided with an opening extending therethrough, an apertured keeper extending rearwardly from one of said posts in registry with the opening in the scoop-board and designed to project therethrough when the scoop-board is in closed position, and a latch-rod mounted to slide through the aperture in the keeper whereby it may be extended against the rear face of the scoop-board to lower the same in closed position, said latch-rod being provided at one end with a hook for engagement with said keeper and at its other end with an abutment for engagement with. the scoopboard, as and for the purpose set forth.

5. A device of the character described comprising supporting-posts, vertically-extending bars secured to said posts on the rear edges of the same, said bars being buckled. intermediate their ends to constitute a rearwardly-projecting keeper, said keepers being provided with apertures, and said bars being further provided at their lower ends with return portions constituting hinged sockets, a scoop-board provided in its lower corners with pintles designed for reception in said sockets and being also provided with openings extending therethrough in registry with said keepers, and latch-rods passing freely through the openings in the scoop-board, the said latch-rods having hooked connection with the keepers and provided at their free ends with abutments designed to contact against the rear faces of the scoop-board, whereby the latch-rods may sustain the scoop-board in lowered position.

6. A device of the character described, comprising supporting-posts, a keeper proj ecting rearwardly from one of said posts and provided with an aperture extending therethrough, a scoop-board hinged to said posts and provided with an opening in registry with said keeper, a latch-rod mounted to slide through said keeper and designed to extend along the rear face of the scoop-board to lock the same in closed position, and an angular latch-plate secured to the rear face of said scoop-board.
