' BUILDING-TUBE.
No. 34,950; i
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 6, 1968.
To alliwhqm it may concer'n' .Be it known that I, ELMER E. VAN. Wm, a citizenof the United States, and a resident of Kenosha, in the county of Kenosha and State; of Wisconsin, have nvented certain new and useful Improvements in Building- Tubes;,'and 'I do hereby declare that the 0 lowing. is a full, clear, and exactde'scription an interlockin thereof. I
The object of my invention is to provide tubular sectionfor building purposes who will fill all the various 1'e' quirements in the construction of buildingssuch,-for instance, .as turning corners, square or circular, facing window-openings, &c., or archwork; and itconsists in certain eculiarities-of construction'and combination of parts tofbe fully hereinafter set forth with subse uently claimed.
In t e drawings, Figure 1 represents "a sec tion of tube inperspective embodying my in vention;'Fi 2, a plan view of a portion of a straight wa l-made up of a series of sections of s'a1d tubes -interlocked; Fig. 3, a side eleva-- tion of the same, and Fig. 4 a plan viewshow-- I ing the manner of constructing a curved wall or arch-with the interlocking tube-sections.
Referring by letter to the drawin s, Are resents a'shbrt section of tube whic ma f e molded from any suitable material, suc as 'clay or. the like; The tube, which is preferabl cylindrical, is provided at either end wit radial slots B ninety degrees apart coin:
ciding with each other. These slots extend;
longitudinally a distance. ap roximately one:-
(i tube and are of a greater width than the thickness of the latter,so that when they are interlockedthere permit adjustment of said tube at an angle to the one in which it rests, the'object being to prov ide for turmng corners in a curve or constructing arches, as wltasdeflectiiig a wall at anypoint desired, which would be impos- I siblewere said slots cut' to fit the tube or tile closely; By cutting the slotsineitherf end,
ate-length of the tile the ends 0 the latter :will abut eachother and distribute the sup-f portin strain equally throughout the wall oneac Qtile. I
. ment is set it p end. is a space between theed' es of the slots'and fwalls ofthe tube fitted t erein sufiicient to;
The primary object of the tile is to are a being desirable tofirst score or scratch the surfaces of the tiles, so as to roduce at th- FPO which'the p '09 I 11y adhere.
plastic material'will more read- In .place of'molding the tubesof clay arch construction, floors, or fireproof buildings a metal tube maybe substitutedwhich if-embedded in cement produces a structure I of igl eat strength and lasting qualities.
i tg. 2 of the drawings shows, a'portion of a straight wall and one method of applying the cement or other coating tothe outside'oi' the slotsv of which are filled in with cement after the tubes are ip'position, and when said ce.
of the same; If an even face. or capping'is rms a rigid continuous wall tubes as well as at the interlocking joint, the
desired for-any'purpose, the alternate tubes-- of the-last row are-cut in half, as shown at G,
3 of the drawings;
. in-conjunction with; the tiles or tubes.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters. Patent, is
. 1., In a hollow section for building purposes "a' tube having its ends radially slotted colncident with each other for approximatelyv onequarter'o'f' the length of the tube at eac 2. In a hollow: section for building pure poses, a tube having its-ends radially slotted y lo I have shown and described one .method of cement ng the interlocking tubes,
at inteiva'ls'of a proximately ninety degrees,
the said-slots 'eing coincident with each other and extending approximately one quarter'of'the length of the tube at each end. Intestimony t at .I claim the foregoing I hate. hereunto set my hand, at Milwaukee, in the, county of Mllwaukeeandstate of Wisco1 '1'sin, 1njthe presence of two witnesses.
