To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, MIHALY RzsA, a subj ect of the Emperor of Austria-Hungary, residing at Nador utca 4, Budapest, Austria Hungary, have invented certain new and useful Improvements Relating to a Transportable Apparatus for Heating and Mixing Materials, of which the following is a specification.
My present improvement relates to a traveling mixing-machine for the mixing of materials and simultaneous heating thereof. It is especially suitable for the pre aration of asphalt material for molding an compressing purposes at the places of use in which the waste ases from the fire serving for the heating of Fire mixture can be used for reliminary heating of the materials to be wor ed upon.
In my improvement I have designed to provide a machine by means whereof without exceeding the limits of size prescribed for railway transit as large quantities of the materials as possible can be operated on with relatively little expenditure of power.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation, Fig. 2 a plan view, Fig. 3 a front elevation, and Fig. 4 a cross-section, of the im roved machine; Fig. 5, a partial longitudina section with a modified form of the mixing-drum; and Fig. 6, the feed door, shown also in Fig. 3.
A.-. shown in Fig. 4, the machine consists of a revoluble drum 2, placed in the rectilinear or otherwise-shaped heatingwhamber 1. Over the drum, at each side thereof, is situated, respectively, a preliminary heatingtrough 3 for the matter to be treated. T hesc troughs are approximately triangular in crosssection, as shownin Fig. 4, so that between the drum and the troughs there are left flues 4. Hereby it becomes possible to construct in the apparatus a drum with the largest possible diameter within the profile admitted for transport by the railwa s and nevertheless in the same apparatus to heat the entire uantity of materials requisite for one filling o the drum by means of the waste gases.
The side walls of the heating-chamber are formed of adjustable iron plates 6 6, which are lined on the inside with a suitable fire-resistant lining 6. At the upper parts of the heating-chamber the preliminary heatingtroughs form the side walls, so that a special wall is not re uisite there. vided on bo h The drum is pro- 5 t ends with collars 26 and is mounted on rollers 27, journaled in the sup-v ports 28. The supports 28 and the heatingchamber are mounted on the frame 29, supported by wheels 30.
On the frame 29 is 'ournaled a shaft 31 31, rovided with a pul ey 33 and a frictional clutch 32, by means of which the part 31 of the shaft may or may not be coupled with the part 31. On the part 31 of the shaft is secured the bevel-pinion 34, meshin with the bevel-wheel 35, secured to the sha 36, parallel to the rotating axis of the drum. The
inner end of the shaft 36 is provided with a pinion (not shown in the drawings) that meshes with teeth (not shown) provided on the inner side of the collar 26, The rotation of the shaft 31 is thus transmitted to the drum. The filling of the drum takes lace at the front end 7 thereof b means of the hop per 8, which can be disp aced along the bars 9 in a horizontal direction.
Over a section 10 of the hopper are arranged, at both sides thereo tubes 11, through which there passes the horizontal shaft 12. This shaft bears two deliveryscrews 13 13, the pitch of which is opposed the one to the other, so that the screws deliver the material from the tubes into feedhopper. The two preliminary heatingtroughs also each possess a delivery-screw 14, the shaft of which is connected with a shaft 15, journaled on the front of the heatingchamber by means of the bevel-gearings 16 16. The shaft 15 rotates the shaft 12 by means of chain gearing 17 or other suitable means. The drum is provided at the front with a feed-door 18, Fig. 6, sliding in the guides 37 and provided with a rack 19. On the front wall 7 of the drum is pivoted a lever 21, supporting a toothed se ment 20, meshing with the rack 19 of the oor 18. On the frame 29 is mounted a support 38, bearing a shaft 38 with two pulleys 39 and 40. The pulley 40 is loose on the shaft 38 and can be coupled with the same by means of a frictionclutch 40.
The pulley 33 of the main shaft 42 is driven by means of a driving-belt 33 from any suitable motor.
The clutch 32 is constructed as a pulley and is connected, by means of the belt 41, with the pulley 39 of the shaft 42, while the pulley 40, mounted on the same shaft 42, is Connected, by means of the driving-belt 43,
with a pulley 44, keyed on the shaft 15. When 1 10 the the drum is to be filled, lever 21 is depressed, and thereby door 18 is lifted and the feedhopper brought in connection therewith.
The small requirement of power is attained by arranging the stirrers 23 inside the drum and revolving therewith at a given distance a; from the walls of the drum 2, so that the stirrers are not obliged to raise the entire contents of the drum when the latter is revolved and no baking of the materials upon the sockets of the stirrers can take place. The stirrers, on the other hand, continuously cut through the material remaining at the bottom of the drum and are devised to act rather as cutters than as stirrers.
The fire-space is formed of a special box which is detachably fixed beneath the drum upon the frame and is transportable separately by means of the wheels 25.
The operation of the machine is as follows: The door 18 is opened by depressing the lever 21, and the hopper 8 is pushed so as to engage the discharge end of the hopper with the door 18. Then the clutch 40 is closed, and thereby the shaft 15 and the delivery-screws 13 and 14 set in revolution, while the clutch coupling the parts 4 1 and 41 of the main shaft is interrupted, so that the drum will rest. If any liquid ingredient is to be added, it can be charged through the opening of the hopper 8 by means of the elevator-pole 47. When the drum is charged, the hopper 8 is withdrawn from the charging-opening. This latter will be shut by means of the door 18 and the drum put in revolution by coupling the parts 41 and 41 of the main shaft. Thereupon fresh material lifted by means of the elevator-poles 48 48 is charged into the troughs 3 and distributed by means of the screws 14 or in any suitable manner. When heating, the screws are at rest, or they may be rotated by means of suitable gearing (not shown in the drawings) alternately in both directions, so as to stir the material without discharging it. The drum will be discharged, after stopping, through a suitable discharge-door provided on the rear front wall of the drum.
In order to obtain an energetic mixing action, it is advantageous to construct the drum in the manner illustrated in Fig. 5, so that the same shall consist of two cylinders connected one to the other at an angle. In consequence of this special form of the drum the material is first thrown against the middle, then again against the two ends of the drum, whereby an intimate intermixture is effected in the shortest possible time and the baking fast is prevented with certainty.
The details of the construction may be changed without departing from the scope of my invention. Thus, for example, instead of the clutches loose and fast pulleys may be arranged to allow the drum and feeding mechanism to be rotated or stopped at will, and any suitable mechanism may be used to the drum can be revolved without withdraw- 7 ing the hopper. The hopper is in this case provided with a slide 50, by means of which the drum can be shut when charged. Further, the delivery-screws 13 and 14 may be dispensed with and the material may be delivered by men standing on suitable platforms or the like.
Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of my said invention and in what manner the same is to be performed, what I claim is- 1. In a transportable apparatus forheating and mixing materials, the combination of a fire-chamber, a mixing-drum heated thereby, a preliminary heating-trough arran ed contiguous to said drum, means to revo ve the mixing-drum, and means to deliver the material from said preliminary heatingtrou h into said drum.
2. In a transportable a paratus for heating and mixing materials, te combination of a fire-chamber,'-a mixing-drum therein, preliminary heating-trou hs arranged above and on each side of sai drum, means to revolve the mixing-drum, and means to deliver the material from said preliminary heating-troughs into said drum.
3. In a transport-able apparatus for heating and mixing materials, a frame located on car-wheels, a fire-chamber mounted on said frame, a drum arranged in the fire-chamber and supported by means of antifrictionrollers, preliminary heatin -troughs arranged on each side above sai drum, deliveryscrews in the said preliminary heatingtroughs, means for rotating the mixingdrum and said delivery-screws, and means to charge the material delivered by said screws into the mixin -drum.

In a transportab e apparatus for heating and mixing materials, a frame located on car-wheels, a fire-chamber of substantially rectangular cross-section, a mixing-drurn arranged in said fire-chamber and supported by means of antifriction-rollers, preliminary heating-troughs of substantially triangular cross-section arranged in the fire-chamber on each side and above said mixing-drum, delivery-screws, and means to charge the material delivered by said screws into the mixing-drum.
5. In a transportable apparatus for heating and mixing materials, a frame located on car-wheels, a fire-chamber of substantially rectangular cross-section, a substantially horizontal revolving mixing-drum arranged in said fire-chamber and supported by means of antifriction-rollers, preliminary heatingtroughs of substantially triangular cross-seet-ion arranged in the fire-chamber on each side and above said mixing-drum, delivery- 5 screws in the preliminary heating-troughs, a feeding-hopper leading through an opening of the front wall of the mixing-drum into this latter, cross-tubes arranged on the front of the mixing-drum, delivery-screws in said 10 cross-tubes, and means for rotating the mixing-drum and delivery-screws.
6. In a mixing-machine a revolving bent drum consisting of two cylindrical parts connected together at an angle, substantially as specified.
