"THOMAS DEPP, or SAN MARCOS, TEXAS.
' Leners' Patent No. 83,477, ma caoba 27, 1868.
IMPROVED STITCHING-I-IORSE.
Be itknown that I, THOMAS DEPP, of San Marcos, in the county of Hays, and State of Texas, 'have invented a new and useful Improvement inI Stitching- Horse; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof,` which will enable others skilled in the art` to make 4and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a side view of my improved stitchinghorse, parts being broken away to show the construction.
`Figure 2 isafront View of the same.
SimilarV letters of'reference indicate like parts.
My invention has for, its object 4to improvey the construction of .the stitching-horses used by harnessmakers, saddlers, Sto., so as to make them more oonvenient and satisfactory in use; and 'it consists in the construction and combination of various parts of the horse, as lhereinafter more fully described.
A is the frame, B is the bench, and G are the clamps of thehorse, about the construction of which parts there is nothingl new. l
D is the seat, which l I prefer to make circular in form, and which is securely attached to the upper end of thel spindle .El v l The spindle E passes down through a hole in the rear part of the bench B, and its lower end enter's and worksin `aI socket prepared for its reception in the levers E;
The rear end of the lever F is pivotedto a support, G, attached' to the Vrear end of the bench B, and it extends forward under the middle part of said bench to its forward end,
H is .a cord or strap, the lower end of which is attached to the forward part of the lever F. The strap or Vcord H passes up through a hole `in the bench B, through a ,hole in the'station'ary jaw of the clamps C, and its` npper end is attached to the hinged or movable jaw of said clamps.
By this construction, when the workman sits down upon the seat y1), his weight depresses the eeend of the lever F, and draws the clamps together.
I is a strap or cord, one end of which is attached to the forward end of the lever F.'
' The cord I passes up through a hole in the bench.
B, over afriction-pulley, J, pivoted to a support attached to the bench, down through a hole in said bench, and its lever K.
One end of the lever K is pivoted to the frame A,
of the horse, and its other or free end extends'outat the side ofthe horse, into vsuch a position that. it may be conveniently reached and operated by the Workman with his foot. Y l
By this construction,- by pressing slightly upon the free end ofthe lever K, Ythe `forward end 'of the lever F will be raised, allowing thev jaws of the clamp Vto open, so that the workman can conveniently insert, adjust, or remove his work.
A The jaws of the clamp G are opened, when thefore- Ward end of the lever F is raised, by a coiled or equivalent spring, I, placed between the said jaws.-
When a coiled spring is used, the cord H may -be` 2.' The combination of the footflever K and strap or cord I with the leverF and bench B, substantially as herein shown and described, and' for the purpose set forth. Y '3. An arrangement of 'mechanism by means of 'which the jaws of the clamps of'av stitching-horse may be closed to hold the work by the weight of the workman when sitting upon his seat, substantially as herein shownand described.
