Description

; PATENTED OCT. 36.1966
. A SAINT C AUNGST COMBINATION TOOL. APPLIOATIOI nun 11.15. 1 66.
Allorney UNITED STATES PA EN OFFICE.
ARTHUR SAINT CLAIR UNGST, OF ALLIANCE, OHIO.
I COMBINATION-TOOL.
' Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed Karol: 15, 1906- Boris-1N0. 806,318.
Patented Oct. so, 1906.
scription of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. My invention relates to an improved combination-tool especially designed for use in fire-department service, the object of the invention being to rovide improvements of this character whic will be most effectual in tearing down plaster 'and lath partitions, metal ceilings, tin roofs, and other arts of a huildin to-get at a fire in a concea ed lace and is a so adapted for use as a plaster- 00k, hay and "straw fork, or for a great many other uses; and the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts, as will be more fully hereinafter describedfand pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view in elevation, illustrating my improvements. Fig. 2 is a view in section. Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken at right angles to I /Iy improved tool 1 is provided at one end with a tubular shank 2, to be secured on a pole or handle of any length desired,'and the other end of the tool is made in the form of an arrow-head 3, with sharp cutting ed es. Back of the arrow-head oint 3 the too is provided with a longitudinal slot 4, one side of which is formed by a removable late 5, secured in place by rivets 6. In tie slot, just back of the arrow-head 3, outwardlyprojecting overlapping knives or prongs 8 are coated and pivoted upon one of the rivets 6.
.A s ring 7 normally holds the knives exteni ed and at right angles to the body of the tool. I These knives or rongs are preferably of the shape shown, wit 1 sharp cutting edges, and when the tool is forced into a partition they will be forced back into the slot and per- -Without di'fiiculty.
mit the tool to be readily guided by the sharp arrow-head 3 and made to enter a artition When the} en of the tool has penetrated the partition, the knives or prongs will spring out at right angles and afiord a good mrchase to pull out the partition or out t ierethrough, and unnecessary damage is avoided. The tool is also well adapted for cutting out sections of a tin roof or metal ceiling or other part of a building to get access to a fire and can bejput to a great varietyof uses, and I do not restrict myself to any particular use.
Sli ht changes might be made in the general orm and arrangement of the parts described without departing from my invention, and hence I do not restrict myself to the n 1 I precise details set forth, but consider myself at liberty to make such slight changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and see eofin invention.
aving ully described my invention, whut I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a device of the character described, the combination of a fixed sharpened bar, and knives having roar sharpened edges,
ivoted in rear of the sharpened end of the bar and projecting out at an angle thereto.
2. A tool having a sharpened end, knives having rear sharpened edges, pivoted to the bar and pro'ecting laterally tl'ierei'rom, and a spring holding said knives normally distended.
3. A tool having a shar ened arrow-head at one end and having a s 0t in rear of said arrow-head, knives pivotally mounted in said slot and having sharpened rear edges,
and a spring exerting outward pressure on the knives to hold them normally distended.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence oftwo SUbSCI'IlF ing witnesses.
ARTHUR SAINT CLMR AUNGS'I.
