Specificaton of LettersPatent. Appumin fiiea March 1,1908. seria No. 806.887.
Patetea o'. as, 1906.
T0 all whom it may cocrn:
Be it known that I, DAVID SwoPE, a citi- 'stretching operation, wherein it is necessary to perforate the hides along their edges in order that the toggle-strings may be passed therethrough, by means of which the hide is suitably secured to the frame.
o In a prior patent, No. 790,012, granted to me lMay 16, 1905, I have described and claimed a novel construction of .a clamp whichcan be readily applied to the hide andl which is so constructed that the pull on the clamp will stretch the hide and more tightly clamp the same. w
It has been found in practice that under certain conditions `when a great pressure is exerted on the clamp there is a liability, if comparatively thin metal is employed, of the sides of the clamp springing or spreading apart, and thus permitting the internal clamping member to be partially disengaged therefrom, and thereby lessening the strength of the clamping action. In my present invention I have overcome this defect caused by the spreading of the sides which sometimes occurs, and to the above end my present invention consists of a novel construction of a clamp comprising two clamping members, the sides of the outer member each having a slot therein in which the j ournals of the ,internal member are seated, said j ournals being provided with a lug', 'whereby when the parts are in assembled position there is no possibility of the sides spreading or bending outwardly under the strain, and, furthermore, the two clamping members may bereadily assembled and disassembled when It further consists of a novel construction of clamping members in which the sides of the outer member are provided with slots in which the internal member when in unclamped position has a ,desired amount of play and when the different members are in clamped position the j ournals of the internal member engage the -upper ends of the slots in the sides of the outer member.
Itfurther consists of other novel features of construction, all as will be hereinafter fully set forth. iFigure 1 represents a plan view of a clamp embodying my invention, the same being shown as the parts appear afterbeing stamped from the sheet metal and before the sides and clamping-jaws have been defiected into the proper position. Fig. 2 represents a perspective view of the clamp in assembled position, showing a flexible connection in operative position with respect thereto. Fig. 3 represents a side elevation of Figf, Fig. 4 represents a perspective view of another embodiment of my invention. Fig. 5 represents a plan view of the internal clamping member shown in Fig. 4. i
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the figures.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a novel construction of a clamp embod 'ng The sides 3 of the outer member are provided| with slots 7, shown as though not necessarly substantially Vertical, in which the journals 8 of the internal member 4 are adapted to be seated, said journals having attheir ends the lugs or bars 9, which are of the same length or slightly shorter than the slots 7 in the sides 3, whereby the internal member of the clamp may be readily assembled or disassembled whenever it is desired, and the internal member will be'permitted to have a desired amount of Vertical play within the sides 3 of the external member 2. The internal member 4 has extending rearwardly therefrom the finger-piece or rearward extension 10, having an aperture 11' therein, through which passes the fiexible connection 12, said connection also passing through an aperture 13 in the finger-piece or rearward extension 14 of the outer member 2. In the present instance the flexible connection is shown as passing through the aperture 11 In the embodiment seen in Figs. 4 and 5 I IOC IIO
r than the length of said lugs, and a exible connection engaging said members to olamp the jaws. A
7. A clamp comprsing a member, one end of which forms a'jaw which extends transversely of'the length of the member and the other end of which is provided With means for en'gaging a flexble connection, said member having elongated slots therein substantially parallel with the jaw, and a second member journaled in said slots, one end of said second member being movable substantially i'n the direction of the length of the first member, the opposite end of which is provided with means for engaging the fiexible connection, said second'member having relative movement away from said first member -during the clampi'ng action. 'Q
8. A'clamp comprising two members, each of said members having a rearward extension of different lengths in the two members' and provided with. an eye therein and each having a forward extension terminating in a jaw, said jaws deflecting toward each other, one of said members vhavin "elongated slots therein substantially paral el with its jaw, the other of said members having journals adapted to be seated in said slots and engage the upper ends thereof when in clamped position,
`means for preventing the disengagement' of said journals With'saidslots and a 4flexible connection passing through the eye in said longer extension and secnred at its extremity to the eye in said shorter extension.
