' i SAFETY DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent..
' Applicationliled August 15,1904. Serial No. 220.842.
k Patented oct. 16,1906.
.To all whom/'it may yconcern:
Be it known that I, ALFRED CLEMENT PARKER, a subject of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, residing at Chorlton-cum- Hardy, Manchester, in the county of Lancaster, England, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Safety Devices, -ofwhich the following is a specification.
This invention relates to safety devices for receptacles which are adapted to inclose fluids under pressure, and is particularly adapted for use upon. receptacles 1n which'combustij-4 ble iuids are employed.
the destruction of a receptacle by theexcesbustion to a combustible fluid in theinterior This invention,l therefore, comprehiends means for automatically lowering'the fluidpressure when that pressure exceeds apre-'- determlned amount and means for prevent-y ing the communication of combustion tothe interior of the receptacle while the fluid-pressure is being lowered. f In the accompanying drawings, which constitute a part'of this specication, yFigure I is a vertical sectional vieav lof a-safety device, the cage beingbrolien away in order to per mit of clearer illustration. Fig. II is a plan view of a re eptacle, showing safety devices attached thereto. j
Referring' to the characters upon the drawings, e indicates'a lid or top o1' areceptacle to which a safety device is referably attached. The top e is provided wit any suitable num ber of safety apertures four of these apertures being shown in Flg. II of the drawings.
-sure exceeds .a predetermined amount.
' cured to the top e, as by screws .ihe object of this invention'is'topreyen/t` l as by a ring 7c and screws 7c ruption of plate gcage retains the broken fragments, while all ofV the esca in terminate amount of uidpressure, the plate that amount.` Theforce .of fluid-pressure necessary., to disrupt theI late is of course less than that which dwoul injure therecepthe receptacle-fas, for instance, when the receptafc'le is the'drenchingftank of a degreasing apparatus'van accidental flrein the neighborvhoodfor any other cause raisin the temperaturekwill; yolatilize the. com ustible Huid,
. which willtheneXert increased pressure upon the," receptafz'le",l the, fpressure becoming greater as ythe temperature rises.
l When the pressure becomes great enough to disrupt plate g,fa,newdanger arises, for the communication of combustion to the Huid inthe interior of thefreceptacle woul'd-resultin animmediate` explosion. By thisinvention suitable means are proyidedfor'obviating this danger. .For this purpose I prefer to employ aca eg', ofwire-gauze, covering and complete y vsurrounding `the aperture vand the plate g. 'The cage j is attached to the top e,
Upon the dislluid passes-through said cage. If this uid is red,.itburnsquietly on the outside surface vbeingdisrupted when the pressure exceeds of cage y, the cage acting upon the principle l ofvDav'ys safety-lamp to prevent communication of combustion to the interior of the receptacle.
Having now describedmy invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a device for preventing explosion by pressure or by fire, thecombination with a receptacle provided with an aperture and adapted to inclose a combustible fluid, `of a frangible plate closing said aperture, and means attached to the receptacle and completely surrounding said plate for preventing the communication of combustion to the interior of said receptacle.
Z. In a device for preventing explosion by pressure or by fire, the combination with a receptacle provided with an aperture and adapted to inclose a combustible fluid, of a plate closing saidaperture adapted to be disrupted by a certain pressure, and means attached to thefrecept'acleland completely surrounding said plate lor'preventing the communication ofcombus'tion to the interior of rupted by a certain ressure, and wiresgauze' covering and comp plate.
4. In a device for preventing explosionl by pressure or byife, thecornbination with a etely surrounding said receptacle provided with an aperture and` adapted to inclose avcombustible fluid,l of a plate closing said. aperturel adapted to be disrupted bya certain pressure, and a wire-v Witnesses.
gauze cage atiached to the receptaclel and completely surrounding said plate.
5. In a device for-preventing explosion by vpressure or by fire, the combination with Ia receptacle having a lid provided with an a erture and adapted to inolose a combustib e fluid, of a plate closing said aperture adapted -to'be"disrupted by a certain pressure, and a wire-gauze cage attached to the receptacle and completely surrounding said plate-closed aperture.
In Witness whereof I have hereunto si my name 1n the -ALFRED CLEMENT PARKER.
