he object of the invention is to provide n. check of simple construction which may he manufactured, readily esseinbled or taken apart for repairs or replacenient, end which is el'licient and quick noting and Will errnit of e Wide angle ci swing ol the door. have 'also sought to prevent twisting or Wearing of the parts, which has previonsljv made this general type of check in some instances objectionable.
liese objects are accomplished in the Inanner hereinafter described by e construction which will vbe more clearly understood from en `.inspection oi the accompanying two sheets of drawings.
Briefly, itime'y be said to comprise sensing having separate chambers for the checking and closing inechenisin, together with e twopart spindle provided with ay support internedinte its-length and packing for vthe checkinir chamber or cylinder, together with si' special form of spring and slide for coecting. with' eccentiicall -disposed rollers spindle to bring the parts into position when the door is closed or permit a, wide' swing' of the door. The luy-pass for controlling the checking fluid is readily accessible from one side of the casing and affords e delicate means ol adjustment. By reason oiE the structure of the spindle-rollers and slide `and the relative arrangement thereof the door is provided with slight resista-nce in the begin ningv of the opening' movement, end n. greater impulse iis-given when the door he- ;ins to close.

The checking vHuid-tor instance, oil--is lled into the chamber 3, preferably before the casing is placed in the floor or sill, and tbenthecover 22secured tightly in lace. A passagethrough thepiston is contro led by a checlevalve 23. In the wall of the cylinder is an escapeassage 24, which-allows a small quantity oft e checking luid to pass by the iston. A by-l ass is 'also provided, leading rom oneend o :the cylinder around ythe 1ston tothe other end of the cylinder. by-pass consists of the two parts'or branches 25 and 26, connected to the chamber 27 at, one sidez of the casing. This bypass is not closed bythe-action ofthe piston.
28 is a controllable valve for regulatingthat .part of the checking iluid which passes through the b epass 25 and 26 by partially closing one or oth passa es 25 or 26 thereof. 29 is a gland around t e valve for forcing theipecking 30 into place around the same.
e opening movement ofthe door causes* the spindle to rotate, and one ofthe rollers bears against the'sliding block 14, thus movingthe block to the leftiand compressing the which is fast on the spindle and pivotally connected to the piston-rod 8, causes the piston to be moved to the right. When the door is released, the sprin acting through the medium of block 14 an one of the rollers carried bythe s indle, causes a reverse rotation of the spin le, tending lto close the door and moving the piston t( the left. This movement of the piston p ts-the checking liquid under compression, which acts to seat the valve, so that the liquid is permitted to gradually escape through the restricted opening and the by-pass 25 26, whereby the closing movement of the door is checked to permit it to gradua'll return to its closed position. 'Ihe spind e being formed in two arts permits of the use of the intermediate hearing, sothat eccentricity of movement of the spindle is prevented. The parts can taken out for repair.
eaasev i The advantages of the invention will be ap arent to those who are skilled in this art. at I claim isv1. In a check and closer, a vertical spindle formed in two parts separably connected together, closing mechanism coacting with one part 'and checking mechanism-coacting with the other part.
2. Ina check and closer, a casing having two chambers one above the other, a spindle passing through both chambers and stepped in the bottom of the casing, a horizontallyacting coiled closing-sprin and rneans :of connection with the spin le inthe upper chamber, and 'checking mechanism inthe lower chamber connected-to the spindle.
3. In a door-eheck, a casing having a checking-chamber and aby-pas`s 25 26-With a conn trol-chamber` 27, means :for controlling the flow of liquid-through said control-chamber, as indle supported in said casing, a piston reciprocable m said checking-chamber and operatively connected to said spindle and having a passage for checking liquid, and a' check-valve carried by thev piston said passage.
4. In a door closer and check,a casing, v4a spindle formed in two separable parte, one seated in the other, and three bearings -for said spindle, one at thevtop, one at the bottom, and the other intermediate the top and bottom, closing means coacting with one part of the spindle, and checking means co-' acting with the other part of thespindle.
5. In a doorcheck, a vertical spindle formed in two parts, one of said arts 'having an aXiall -arranged recess and t e other part removably litting therein. l I
6. In a door-check, the combination of a two-part casing, a gland between the parts, a lower spindle part stepped in said casing having a bearing in said gland, and a second spindle part removable from said iirstemenn tioned spindle part. 7. In a door closer and checkya casing having two chambers, a spindle passing through said chambers, longitudinally acting closing mechanism arranged in the upper chamber, a cover for said chamber and mechanism, checking mechanism' arranged in the lower chamber, and a removable end cap for said chamber.
8. In av-door. closer and check, a casing formed with 'two chambers, a spindle passing therethrough and stepped in the lower part of the casing, checking mechanism connected to thev lower part of the spindle, a gland forming a bearing for the intermediate portion of said spindle, longitudinally acting closing mechanism in the upper chamber of said casing, and a cover 'for said chamber affording a bearing for the upper part ci said spindle.
