UNIT D, STATE$ PATENT ROBERT ADAMS, OF SOUTHWARK, COUNTY or SUR Y, ENGLAND.
COMBINED DQOR CHECK AND CLOSER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 437,547, dated September 30, 1890. h ilidation fild m 18, 1887. Serial No. 238.6%. (No niodel.) Patented in England February 28, 1885, Karma. I
To all whom it may concern.-
Be .it known that 1, ROBERT ADAMS, en gineer, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing'at No. 17 Blackman Street, Southwark, in the county of Surrey, England, have in vented certain new and useful Improvements in aiCombined Door Check and Closer, (for which 'I have obtained a patent in Great Britain, No. 2,718, bearing date February 28, 1885,) of which the following is a specification.
. This invention relates tocertain new and usefullimprovements in door checks; and it consists in thenovel construction and arrangement of. parts hereinafter fully described, and specifically pointed outin the claims, due reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming. a part of this specification, wherein-t Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of the improved self-closing appliance and check. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation of the cylinder h with theinternal parts removed. Fig. 3 is a section showing the method of fixing to a doorpost. Fi 4 is a section on theline 1 2 of Fig. v2. Fig. .11.is an elevation, partly in section, of the double-acting appliance for swing-doors- Fig.12 shows the application of the appliance where it is inconvenient to sink an apparatus in or under the. floor; Fig. 13 shows its application to an ordinary .back-of-door spring. Figs. 14 and 15 show ;two methods of tightening and regulating the spring shown in Fig. 1.
'.In Figs. 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 my arrangement of a combined door spring and check is shown. h is .a metallic cylinder, closed at its bottom and provided at its top with a cover 2'. k is a block having helical groove Z02 and a sleeve k', the upper partofsaidsleeve being fitted with a'capland having a perforated flange. Z. .19
is a spindle passing through a suitable perforation in the cover'i and through the block'k. Said spindle is bored throughout its length,
and is provided with ports-pp, as-shown.-
A valve-spindle p carrying at its lower end a valve-plug, is fitted within the bore of the spindle p, and is turned and regulated by the head 19 to adjust the valve-plug toward and away from its seat to regulate the passage of liquid through the ports .19 4). Instead of forming the valve-spindle with a valve-plug upon its lower end, a ball-valve maybe employed and held up to its-seat by means of a spring, as shown in Fig. 6. -The cap [on the sleeve 70' forms astuffing-box and is packed at 1 .m is an ordinary cup-leather. his a leather washer, and n ametallic washer, both being normally held up in place bymeans of a spring n The washer n and spring 01. may, if desired, be dispensed with.-- .The upper-part of the spindle is fitted with aleather washer 0 and a metallic washer 0, which is prevented from turning in the cover by a nib at any part of its circumference. 1 A similar washer 0 is caused to turn with the spindle bya nib o engaging with the spindle. ris aspiral spring located between the cover 01 and flange l, and exerts a downward pressure upon-said flange. To the lower end of the spindle p is secured a friction-roller g and said frictionroller rests within the helical groove 77?, formed in the block lo. q q are guides formedin one the door-post by means of a flange 7L and the top of the spindle pissecured to the doorby means of a similar flange. When the device is designed to be applied to doors which are already provided with springs for closing the same, the spring 1' may be omitted and-the cylinder secured to the door-post by means of a flange h and a flange h screwed to the door, said flange it having formed integral therewith a collar h, which engages with the spindle p.
In Figs. 7, 8, 9, and 11 I have shown the combined door-check-and spring as being double-acting--that is to say, the block 70 is provided with two grooves, as shownin Fig.
7, with which grooves the friction-roller (1 engages. This form of construction is designed to be employed with doors swinging in both directions, and the roller g engaging with both grooves will cause the door to. close when opened from either side. Instead of friction-rollers, pins (1 may be used, or two rollers or two pins used. In Fig. 11 I have shown both a pin and a roller. In said figure I have also shown the perforated flange Z, made separate from the cup Z, and the said flange and cup secured directly to the spindle by means of lock-nuts Z7 F.
In Fig. 12 I have shown a method of fastening the device to the floor. In said figure h is a flange secured to the bottom of the cylinder and designed to be screwed to the floor, and h is a flange on the side of the cylinder screwed to the door-post. h is a plate screwed to the door and engaging the top of the spindle 19. Fig. 13 shows the application of the device to an ordinary back-of-door spring= that is to say, those springs wherein is em ployed a spring-actuated arm carrying a roller at its end which presses upon the door to close it. In Figs. 14 and 151 have shown two methods of tightening and regulating the compression of the spring, this being accomplished by turning the nut h in the proper direction.
Having thus described my invention, I will now proceed to describe its operation.
The cylinder 71. is first supplied with a suitable quantity of liquid, and for this purpose oil is preferred, on account of its lubricating qualities and its non-liability to freeze or corrode any of the parts. The cylinder having been fastened to the door-post and the spindle to the door, as above described, upon opening the door the spindle will be rotated, causing the friction-roller to turn in the helical groove, and thus force the block and the perforated flange upward against the spring and compressing the same. During this movement of the parts the fluid above the flange Z escapes through the perforations therein to the bottom of the cylinder, the washer 'n yieldingto uncover the perforations after the manner of a flap-valve. Upon releasing the door after it has been opened the spring 0" exerts a downward pressure upon the block it through the medium of the flange Z and causes the block to descend, and the descent of the block causes the spindle to rotate, thus closingthe door. Upon the descent of the block the washern will close the perforations in the flange Z, and the fluid beneath the block and said flange will escape through the spindle p and ports 10' 12 therein to the upper end of the cylinder h; but owing to the ports being contracted the fluid will escape through them very slowly, offering aresistance to the descent of the block 70, and thus allowing the door to close but very slowly and prevent its slamming.
I claim 1. The combination of acylinder or case for containing a fluid, a rotary spindle, a block or piston in the case surrounding the spindle and movable longitudinally thereof by the rotation of the spindle, and a contracted channel for the passage of the fluid from one side of the piston to the other, substantially as described.
2. The combination of a cylinder or case for containing a fluid, a rotary spindle, a block or piston within the case surrounding the spindle and movable longitudinally thereof, means for preventing the block or piston turning with the spindle, and a contracted channel for the passage of the fluidfro'm one. side of the piston to the other, substantially as described.
3. The combination of a cylinder or case,a spindle, a sliding block or piston, a channel connecting the spaces above and below the block or piston, and a valve for closing the channel in the spindle connected with an op erating device outside the cylinder or case, substantially as described.
4. The combination of a cylinder or case, a rotating spindle therein, a piston sliding on said spindle, and a channel connecting the spaces above and below the piston, the openings to the channel being arranged substantially as set forth.
5. The combination of a cylinder or case, a rotary spindle, a block or piston sliding on the spindle and moved by the rotation of the latter, a channel in the spindle opening above and below the block or piston, and an adj ustable valve for controlling said channel, substantially as described.
6. The combination of a cylinder orcase, a
spring, a spindle having a fluid-channel therein, a sliding block or piston connected with the spindle, and a valve carried by the piston, substantially as described.
7. In a door-check, the combination of a cylinder h, a hollow spindle 19, formed with inlet and exit ports 19' and provided with friction pins or rolls (1 a block 70, formed with cam-surfaces 70 for said pins or rolls to bear against, the flange l, and passages Z and a washer to bear against the lower side of the passages Z to close the same when the two parts are in contact, substantially as described.
