Be it known that I, DANIEL C. D-Avis, a citizen of. the United States, residing at Vilonia, in the county of Faulkner and State of Arkansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Baling-Presses and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

The object of the invention is to provide a baling --press having a feeding mechanism connected therewith, said mechanism being adapted to be automatically operated by the movement of the plunger.
construction of operating mechanism whereby the plunger will be projected and quickly retracted, means being provided to, guide the plunger-rod, so that the movement of the plunger in the baling-chamber will be per fectly true, thus avoiding interference of said plunger with the sides of said chamber, means being provided whereby each charge of hay when pressed back by the plunger will be held in place.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter described and claimed.

Pivotally mounted upon a latera extension of the base, forming the support for the power mechanism, is a bell-crank retracting-lever 9, the longer arm of which is connected to the plunger-rod by a link 10. The shorter arm of the lever 9 is beveled, as shown at 12, and is adapted, when the plunger is projected, to be turned into the'path of movement of the operating devices of the power mechanism, whereby said plunger will be retracted.

is pivotally mounted upon the lateral 170- jection of the base of the press, said w eel consisting of upper and lower circular frames 14, which are connected togetheri at the centers by a hub 15 and are connected together near their peripheries by a plurality of bars 16, on each of which is mounted a tappet element, here shown as a revoluble antifrictionroller 17. Connected to the up er side of the top frame 14 is a sweep 18, sald sweep being here shown and preferably projects in opposite directions from the wheel 13 and is adapted to have connected to each end suitable draft devices 19, to which one or more draft-animals may be attached. When the plunger is retracted; and Fig. 8 is a plan view, wheel is turned by the draft-animals at with the tappet-lug 8 until the plunger has tached to the sweep 18', each tappet-roller 19 plunger-rod to then engage the short arm of the bell-crank 9i Said wheel is turned in the direction indicated by the arrow in Fig. 8. When one of its tappet elements 17 engages the tappet-lug 8, the plunger-rod and plunger will be moved in one direction to compress the material in the bale-chamber. The said tappet element 17 will remain in engagement reached the inward limit of its stroke, when the said tappet element 17 will pass from said lug 8 and engage the short arm of the bell-crank lever and turn said lever in the di rection indicated by the arrow in Fig. 8, hence causing said lever, which is connected to a plunger-bar by the link 10, to move said plunger-bar in the reverse direction, as will be understood. 1
By providing a power mechanism such as herein described the plunger-bar will be positively projected and retracted, the retraction of the plunger taking place immediately after the same has reached the full limit of its projection.
Secured to the baling-box around the feed opening therein is a supporting-frame 20, to which is connected an automatically-operated feeding device 21. The feeding device I '21 consists of front upwardly and rearwardly projecting stationary fender-plates 22, connected at their upper ends by a crossbar 23, to which is loosely connected a front rearwardly-curved guard-plate '24. Said plate is provided with curved guide-bars 25, by means of which the same is connected to the crossbar 23, as shown. Journaled in the forward end of'the frame 20 is a crank-shaft 26, said shaft being provided with a cen-' trally-disposed crank 27, to which is connected the lower end of the front guard-plate 24. The ends of the crank-shaft 26 are provided with end cranks 28, to each of which is pivotally attached a-connecting-link 29.
T he opposite ends of the links 29 are adjustably connected to slotted cranks 30 on the ends of a rear crank-shaft 31 by means of adjusting-blocks 34, which are slidably engaged'with the slotted cranks 30 and are held in adjusted position thereon by means of clamping-bolts 35. shaft 31 is connected a-rear closing-plate 86, said plate being provided onits upper end and on each side with rearwardly and downwardly projecting closing-fingers 37. These fingers are adapted to be engaged with curved closing-flanges 38, secured to curved side plates 39, which are fixedly connected to longitudinally-disposed pivot bars or rods 40, j ournaled in the ends of the frame 20 adjacent to the sides of the same, as shown,
Secured to the forwardly-projecting end of the p1ungerhead is-a trip bar 41, said bar To the rear crankbeingprovided at its inner end with an offset or notch 42, with which when the plunger is in a retracted position is adapted to beengaged the center crank 27, of-the front crankshaft 26, thereby holding the plates of the feed device in an open position. The crank 27 is provided with an antifriction sleeve or roller 43 at the point where the s ame engages the trip-bar 42, thereby reducing the friction of said parts when the plunger is reciprocated. As'soon as the plunger is projected after a charge of hay has been placed into the feed- ,ing device the crank 27 will be rocked foring-plate forwardly anddownwardly, there- :by forcing the hayin the feeding device down vinto the baling-chamber and the head'of the plunger; Said hay is forced back into the baling-chamber by a further movement of the plunger. While the plunger is completing its inward stroke the crank 27 and the .parts of the feeding device are held in a 'closed position by the engagement of said crank with the upper side of the trip-bar 41, said parts being also held in closed position until the plunger has been retracted to its extreme outward position, when the crank arm will be again engaged by the offset or notch 42 in said trip-bar and rocked back to its former position, thus reversing the move- ,ment of the parts of the feeding device and opening the plates thereof. If desired, a guard strip or'bar 44 may be arranged above the trip-bar 41 to prevent hay or other material falling thereon and obstructing the'movement'of the crank 27. The extended portion of the base of the baling-press upon which the power mechanism is mounted may, if desired, be detachably connected to the baling-chamber, as jshown-at 45, so that said parts may be separated to facilitate the transportation of the press. A baling-press constructed as herein shown and described is simple strong, and durable in construction, efficient in operation, and well adapted to the purpose for which it is designed, the power mechanism thereof being so arranged that great power is exerted thereby upon the plunger mechanism, thus enabling a compact bale to be formed, the automatic feeding [mechanism greatly facilitating the supplying of hay or other material to the press.
, From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention as defined by the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a baling-press, the combination with a baling-chamber having a feed-opening, of a plunger adapted to be reciprocated in said chamber, a feeding mechanism arranged above said feed-opening, said mechanism comprising a supporting-frame, a front end guard-plate, a rear end closing-plate, side plates, means whereby the latter plates are actuated by said rear plate, means whereby said front and rear plates are actuated by the plunger, and means to project and retract said plunger, substantially as described.
2. In a baling-press, the combination with a baling-chamber having a feed-opening, of a plunger adapted to bereciprocated in said chamber, a feeding mechanism arranged above said feed-opening, said mechanism comprising a supporting-frame, a front end guard-plate, a rear end closing-plate, curved side plates having curved guide-flanges secured thereto, closing-fingers formed on said rear plate to engage said guide-flanges, a front crank-shaft connected to and adapted to operate said front plate, a rear crankshaft to operate said rear plate, means whereby said front crank-shaft is adj ustably connected to said rear shaft, and means whereby said plunger is operated, substantially as described.
3. In a baling-press, the combination with a baling-chamber having a feed-opening, of a plunger adapted to be reciprocated in said chamber, a feeding mechanism arranged above said feed-opening, said mechanism comprising a supporting-frame, a front end guard-plate, a rear end closing-plate, curved side plates having curved guide-flanges secured thereto, closing-fingers formed on said rear plate to engage said guide-flanges, a front stationary fender-plate having an upper crossrod, curved guide-bars secured to the curved upper end of said front plate, a front crank-shaft connected to the lower end of said front plate, a link connected to the cranked ends of said front crank-shaft, a rear crank-shaft connected to said rear plate, means to adjustably connect the rear end of said link to said rear crankshaft, and means whereby said plunger is connected to said front crank-shaft to actuate the same, substantially as described.
4. In a baling-press, the combination with a baling-chamber having a feed-opening, of a plunger adapted to be reciprocated in said chamber, a feeding mechanism arranged above said feed-opening, said mechanism comprising a supporting-frame, a front end guard-plate, a rear end closing-plate, curved side plates having curved guide-flanges secured thereto, closing-fingers formed on said rear plate to engage said guide-flanges, a front stationary fender-plate having an upper cross-rod, curved guide-bars secured to the curved upper end of said front plate, a front crank-shaft connected to the lower end of said front plate, a link connected to the cranked ends of said front crank-shaft, a rear crank-shaft connected to said rear plate, means to adj ustably connect the rear end of said link to said rear crank-shaft, a trip-bar carried by said plunger to engage and actuate the center crank on said front crank-shaft, an antifriction-roller mounted on said crank, and a guard-strip arranged above said bar, substantially as described.
5. In a baling-press, the combination with a baling-chamber having a feed-opening, of a plunger adapted to be reciprocated in said chamber, a feeding mechanism arranged above said feedopening, said mechanism comprising a supporting-frame, a front end guard-plate, a rear end closing-plate, curved side plates, means arranged on said back plate to close said side plates, crank-shafts connected with said front and rear plates to operate the same, a plunger-rod connected to said plunger, means whereby said crankshafts are operated by said plunger and rod to impart movement to said. plates, a laterally-projecting trip-lug secured to said plunger-rod, a pivotally-mounted bell-crank lever connected to the same, a pivotally-mounted operating-wheel, said wheel comprising a central hub having upper and lower circular frames connected thereto, radially-disposed trip-bars arranged between said frames to alternately engage the trip-lug on said plunger-rod and said retracting-lever, and a sweep connected to said wheel, substantially as described.
