DISPLAY-STICK.-

Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, ISRAEL GILsEY, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Cincinnati, county of Hamilton, State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Display-Sticks, of which the following is a specification.

The object of my invention is a displaystick which in its closed position presents the appearance of an ordinary stick, such as that of a walking-stick, but which is provided with a means operated by actuating a button for projecting from its top a rod to which a flag is attached, the flag in the operation unfurling automatically.

In the accom anying drawings I have illustrated a disp ay-stick embodying my invention.

Figure 1 is a side elevation of a stick with the rod in its extended position and the flag unfurled. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the Fig. 3 is a sectional view, upon an enlarged scale, of the stick and a partial view of the rod and flag, the central part of the stick being broken out and the ends being brought together to economize space. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of the knob, showing the rod and the flag in the position they occupy when closed.

Referring to the parts, the stick A has a central longitudinal bore a. Near the lower end of the bore a a slot a is cut in the stick extending into the bore. Adjacent to the slot (1/ a leaf-spring B is attached, from the upper loose end of which a finger 6 projects in through slot 0/, the outer end of the finger terminating in a button I). To the up er end of the stick A a hollow spherical kno C is secured, the uppertend c of the knob being open and having a cap 0 attached to it by means of a hinge 0 Within the bore a a straight longitudinal rod D is situated, the lower end of which terminates in a tooth cl, which is beveled upon its lower end to press the dog I) outward when the rod is pushed downward and has a shoulder upon its upper face to engage dog I) to hold the rod in its lowermost position. A coiled spring E is secured to the end of the rod adjacent to the tooth d, the upper end of the spring E being secured tothe top of stick A adjacent to the bore a, the tendency of the spring being to contract and exert a normal outward pressure upon the rod D. Secured to the outer end at of the rod D is a tape F, the other end f a series of rings f are secured which are fitted over the rod D. To the upper part of the tape F the side of a flag G is secured. The tape F is made of a length such that it will permit the spring E to project the rod D above the top of the knob C a distance such as to carry the flag G clear above the top of the knob.

When the rod D is depressed so that the tooth d is engaged by dog I), the upper end d of the rod is in the bottom of the knob, the tape F is folded likewise in the bottom of the knob, the eyelets f are brought together near the upper end of the rod, and the flag G is folded together within the interior of the knob, whose cap a may then be placed in its closed position. Now if the button 6 be drawn outward, releasing the tooth d, spring E immediately shoots rod D upward, which will throw the cap 0 open and shoot forward until it is stopped by the tape F, which, being straightened out, itself stretches the flag F and presents it in an unfurled position, such as shown in Fig. 1.

That I claim is 1. The combination of a stick having a hollow bore in its upper end, a hollow knob secured upon the top of the stick, a rod within the bore, a spring for pressing the rod normally outward, a catch within the bore for holding the rod in its retracted position, a tape secured to the upper end of the rod and to the knob to limit the outward movement of the rod, and a strip of flexible fabric secured to the upper end of the tape.

2. The combination of a stick having a hollow bore in its upper end, a hollow knob secured upon the top of the stick, a rod within the bore, a spring for pressing the rod normally outward, a catch within the bore for holding the rod in its retracted position, a tape secured to the upper end of the rod and to the knob to limit the outward movement of the rod, a series of rings secured to the tape near its upperend and surrounding the rod and a flag secured to the upper end of the tape adjacent to the rings.
