Description

No. 833,262. Q 4 PATENTED OCT. 16, 1906. :P. e. TOWNSEND. HBNS NEST.
APPLICATION FILED 1330.16. 1905.
3 vwewtoz I attuned;
PETER G. TOWNSEND, OF RENO COUNTY, KANSAS.
HENS NEST.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 16, 1906.
Application filed December 16, 1905. Serial No- 291,998.
To all whovn it puny concern:
Be it known that I, PETER G. TOWNSEND, a citizen of the United States, residing in the county of Reno and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hens Nests, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to nests for hens; and it consists of an improved structure by which the weight of the hen while on the nest swings a gate over the entrance to the nest and holds it in a closed position; but as soon as the fowl steps out of the nest onto a platform provided for that purpose the gate is swung to an open position by the weight of the fowl and remains in that position until the nest is again occupied.
The details of my invention will be clearly described hereinafter and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a front view in elevation of my improved nest; Fig. 2, a cross-sectionalview showing the operating-gear, and Fig. 3 a plan view with the roof removed.
In the drawings similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts in all of the views.
A represents the casing of my improved nest, comprising upright ends or partitions, (designated 13,) a closed back O, and roof D. The front of the casing A is open, as shown, E
' representing braces at the top and adjacent to the bottom of the front for holding the ends and partitions B in place.
F represents bearings secured to the ends and partitions B, in which are journaled the gate G.
H represents levers fulcrumed on the uprights B on both sides of the nest, having its longer end toward the front of the nest and connected with gate G by means of links I.
J represents the nest-box, suspended from the short arms of levers II by means of uprights K, secured to the nest and to said levers and slidably mounted between guides L.
M represents a platform having uprights N secured thereto and to the long arm of the lever intermediate of its fulcrum and end and slidably mounted between guides O.
In operation. the gate G of my improved nest is in a horizontal position when unoccupied. This permits the hen to enter the nest. As soon as the hen steps into the nestbox J her weight swings the levers H, so that their long arms are raised, swinging the gate G upward and closed by means of links I. At the same time the platform M is also raised. When the hen desires to leave the nest, she will step on the platform M, when her weight will swing the long arm of the lever H downwardly, which will force the gate G to swing downwardly and open, so that the hen can leave the nest.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. In a hens nest, a box open at one end, a gate adapted to close the opening, levers suitably fulcrumed, operative connections between said levers and gate, the nest-box suspended from said levers, and a platform suspended from said levers, substantially as shown and described.
2. In a hens nest, a box open at one end, a vertically-swinging gate adapted to close said opening, levers suitably fulcrumed, operative connections between said levers and gate, the nest-box suspended from said levers, and a platform suspended from said levers, substantially as shown and described.
3. In a hens nest, a box open at one end, a vertically-swinging gate adapted to close said opening, levers fulcrumed on the sides of said box, links connecting one of the arms of said levers with said gate, a platform suspended from the same arms of the levers, and the nest-box suspended from the other arms of the levers, substantially as shown and described.
4. In a hens nest, a box open at one end, a verticallyswinging gate adapted to close said opening, levers fulcrumed on the sides of said box having their long arms toward the front, links connecting the long arms of said levers with said gate, a platform suspended from the long arms of the levers intermediate of the end of the levers and their fulcrums, and a nest-box suspended from the short arms of the levers, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I hereto affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
PETER G. TOWNSEND.
